2009 SEASON HIGHLIGHTSOPENING DAY 2009 USHERS IN BASEBALL AND SPRING
It was a long but clear day, marred only by a steady wind. Pictures began at 9am followed by the parade through town. Opening ceremonies started at noon, followed by a full slate of games at all 4 fields ending with a clash under the lights at the major field. Another Little League opening day - another chance to get acquainted with baseball and spring. It was the 56th opening day to be exact. Opening day is when the kids get to be in a parade, wearing those brand new uniforms. At the opening ceremonies all our eager to see the players hit the field for real, but decorum calls for procedure, like introductions of dignitaries, presentations for championships won the previous year, a message from the League president, and finally the honoree throwing out the first pitch that sends the season into action. It has been 40 years since former Railroader Little League and Cubs standout catcher Greg Simons donned a glove on the major field. Simons was on the 1969 Maryland State championship team. He reached base 15 straight times, including 12 hits between the District finals and State finals. He enthusiastically threw out the first pitch, which was caught by Dalton Anderson, with umpire Tony Russo behind the plate. 2009 Raffle ticket drive results were announced and winners were drawn. Quinn Lear was honored for selling the most tickets followed by Austin Stockman. The 2008 age 10-11 Brunswick all-stars went all the way to the Maryland tournament last year and won the State title. They unveiled their championship flag then ran it out to the flag court where it was raised, proudly flying in the breeze.
