In a first but hopefully not the last time - a fundraising event for the local players who will soon be leaving to attend the world series was held at Sharks Sporting Club Victoria Point. Starting at 2 with free coaching for kids it was followed by pre-game entertainment consisting of base running-Bruin Josh Davison competed in this - Outfield throw to home plate won by Bruin Raymond Lane-Catcher pick off with Bruin Richard Devey competing -Fastest pitch won by Bruin Thomas Cameron and a homerun derby.
The main game was between current world team members and some past world players included Bruins Tyron Bartorillo,Josh Davison(Australia) and Richard Devey(Great Britain) against past and present Queensland players which included Bruins Raymond Lane and Martin Connolly. Three judges to select Best Batter , Best Fielder and MVP included Bruin Ray Bartorillo invited for his many appearances for his state.
It was a tight game which was a draw at the top of the 7th which was impressive for the Queensland team which some thought may not be up to the task. In the top of the 7th , he world team forged ahead by one run due to a big homerun by Bruin Richard Devey and in the bottom of the 7th that lead was saved by a diving ground ball play by Zenon Winters which wowed the crowd and finished the game in a memorable way.
Many past greats were invited that night and their accomplishments mentioned between innings and photos projected which included Bruin great Greg Woodings, and so many faces we knew and loved in eras gone by.
It was a very successful evening and we hope such nights can be a regular thing. The Bruins softball club would like to thank Barry Jackson of Sharks for all his efforts to bring all the elements together and all our friends together again.
Softball was the winner that night!
