BRUINS START 2009 WITH WIN OVER DEVILS

Opening day was made special by having Danielle Stewart and Josh Davison -Australian players both come out to throw the first pitch of the season and at a new park at Zillmere but host Devils day was spoiled by losing to last-years runners-up Bruins.

Orange were not so lucky as they have yet to secured a regular pitcher but look out for when they do as there are some talented ball-players in that team but for now they lead the league in laughs.

Go Bruins !!

BRUINS GO DOWN TO SOX
The Brisbane A Grade Grand Final 30/8/08 started with a bang, thanks to a big out-of-the-park home run by lead-off Peter Strauss, but ended seven innings later with no other runs being scored by the Brown team and many scoring opportunities left stranded on base. It was a sweet and sour game for Pitcher Scott Sutherland who threw well enough to rack up 10 strike outs but gave up 7 safe hits - four of those in the KO innings that saw Redsox score 4 of their 5 runs. It was a tight game with the only error by Redsox outfield dropping a catch but no score resulting from that . Redsox must have been worried a couple of times when Bruins had runners on 2 and 3 and none down and then been relieved when they were left stranded again and again. Final score 5-1.Safe hits recorded for Peter Strauss, Richard Devey and Cory Mumby . Man of the Match went to Redsox Player 1st Baseman .

MVP NIGHT - BRISBANE SOFTBALL
MVP Night at Downey Park 16/8/08 was a great success-with close to a 100 people attending- and some VIP's such as Daphne Hass(past president) and John & Barb Bleakley(founding father of mens softball) invited to present trophies . Richard Devey polled the most votes for Bruins Brown making him the team MVP and Malachi Cameron polled the most for Bruins Orange but it was Saints Pitcher Mike Aro who was voted MVP for the A Grade. An All-Star was named and included Richard and Malachi along with Scott Sutherland, Hamish Monkman and Harlan Ambrose . Congratulations to all, well done boys for doing Bruins proud.

BROWN VERSUS ORANGE IN KNOCKOUT FINAL-AGAIN!
In a repeat of 2007, we have to fight each other for a spot in the Grand Final . Brown lost to Redsox in the semi-final and now have to face a strong-looking Orange team who made short work of Saints last night. Phil Puketapu pitched well but its was the hitting that knocked Saints out of the water-even B.Grade pick-up Mick Gregory (filling in for an ill Troy Sutherland) hit Saints pitcher Mike Aro out of the park. Travis Bartorillo started the onslaught with a big home run .

Masters of Classic

Report by Rockin' Ray Bart

"Unkind folk would call us Old Fat Blokes in tight pants, more subtle types might refer to us as Mature Ballplayers, and perhaps somewhere in between lies the real truth.

The Club Classic Masters, as usual, was a snodger of a weekend and one of a few venues these days where old Bruins lineups reform and go to play.  Nursing our decrepit (Ray Lane excepted) physiques through the round robin stage, we managed to limp in to the semi finals where we were rolled by the impressive Hooter's lineup 4 to zip. We must have roughed 'em up good though, as they were then dealt with in the tournament final by the Bombers of Tweed.  It was a most ripping victory.

Many thanks to the new guys who played with us in the event, most of whom also were kind enough to chuckle politely at our 80's vintage jokes and stupid banter.  Next year, however, we probably will need to employ and interpreter for Spike (Sausages) Clancy as he is one of the few remaining humans who can actually talk in hyroglyphics .

Kiwi import Col Sutherland, frequent Bruin Gavin Lucas and new comers Greg Boddice, Bobby Biggs and Clancy Condren all were welcome additions to our team and we hope they are kind enough to come back and do it again when next we suit up.  As usual, Bruins legends Ray Lane , Warren Cutts and Simon Carr were all smashing, with the usual display of spectacular Laney catches, Carr home run power and Cutts bleederisms.  In addition, the terrible twoesome of Gyte and Stone were solid and reliable in and out of the beer tent.

Thanks to Tracey our scorer and of course the magic Christine Jacka who, despite outgrowing our usefulness as ballplayers, still finds a place for us older dudes to play.  We love ya, Cracka!

Bruins Masters will return........."

BRUIN OFF TO SYDNEY FOR QUEENSLAND
Richard Devey was selected to represent his State at the upcoming Nationals being held in conjunction with the Womens Nationals in Sydney starting on the 6th of January 2007. It is a major anniversary for softball at National Level and that is why it is being held earlier this year so as both the men and women can be honored at the same ceremony. Richard was the only South Brisbane player to make it, although our Tyron Bartorillo will be playing for the Northern Territory as a pick-up. Also in the team are ex-Bruins Terry Downes, Hamish Monkman and Darren Pyke and the team is coached by master Bruin Geoff Michel.

We at the Club wish you all the best and bring home the shield boys !

MASTERS SHOW THEY ARE THE MASTERS
Bruins Ruins showed they still have the right stuff by making the Grand Final in the Masters Club Classic tournament this Queen's Birthday weekend. It is the second year of masters for this annual event but our first outing as a masters team but not the last. It was a success not just for coming second but the getting together of our past greats Raymond Lane , Ray Bartorillo , Marty Connolly, Simon Carr and Warren Cutts came all the way from Perth to make his master debut. Add current Bruin Shane Emery and the master Geoff Michel and you almost have the Classic Team of 19 . PK Pride were too strong for us and in the end it was a one-sided event, but too much fun was had to not feel like a winner. Bruins would like to thank Gavin Lucas, Rob Jemmott, Darren Skipper. Ian Gyte and Neville Stone for donning the brown and orange to make a great team in 2007. Go Bruins !
