Summer 2009 "C" and "D" League Champions Crowned!!!
Going into game three neither team seemed willing to bend. So for five innings these two titans played to a scoreless tie. However, in the sixth NY Largest would open the scoring and not stop. Unable to answer, Sports Page would eventually fall to the “C” Champions 7-0. NY Largest was led by the superb pitching of Jimmy Bush and Papo. Congratulations to Javie & Ivan of NYL in capturing the 2009 “C” League Championship. Their second in a row!
In Game one Arsenal exploded for 7 runs in the first inning, leading to their 12-1 victory. In a similar fashion in game two, Arsenal scored 5 runs in the first inning. They would go on from there to the 9-6 victory, despite a five run sixth inning rally by Team Collazzo. Congratulations to Herman and Mario of Arsenal for capturing the “D” league Championship.

Playing in 30 degree temperatures, the Tribe put up five runs in the seventh inning of game two to take a 9 – 4 win and tie the series at one apiece. In game three the Tribe took an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh where the Phantoms mounted a late game charge. After scoring two runs in the frame, the Phantoms loaded the bases with two out. So there it was title on the line, but a hard line drive was handled by Angle (MVP) to secure the game and the championship. Congratulations to the Dottey Brothers and the rest of the Tribe crew. Sorry About the Delay…

DYNASTY
Game one of the "B" championship series was dominated by pitching and defense and played to a 0-0 tie for six a one half innings. It took the power of Paul from the Highlanders to break the tie in the bottom of the seventh when he hit a ball that bounced off of and over the rightfield fence giving the Highlanders a 1-0 game one victory.
Game two was played equally as tight. The highlanders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. It took a grand lsam homerun by Clemente to get it tied up for the Indinans. Reinvigerated by the blast, the Indians forged ahead with three more runs, taking a 7-4 lead. In the top of the seventh the Highlanders showed their metal and score three of their own to force extra innings. And in the top of the eighth they took the lead at 8-7. The lone run would hold up giving the Highlanders the game and she title. This marks the third consecutive year that they have won the Fall title. And earns them the "B" division sweep of summer and fall in 08'. Congrats to Ray, Ricky and the boys on an outstanding season.

All-Star Game
Managers this is just a quick reminder regarding the All-Star Game. It will be played on Sunday 7/27 at Six Diamonds Field #6 at 1:30. The break down will be as follows, the "C" East and "D" North will play as one team and "C" West and "D" South will play as their opponent. Captains please select two players from your team to participate in the game. Please select people who are going to attend. It's kind of pointless to elect a guy because he deserves it, only to have him not show up.
Also please contact Tony Ferrazzo (917-721-1114) and let him know how many players and spectators you will be bringing to the game. There will be food and raffles. The playoffs start the first week of August. Good Luck and enjoy the All-Star game.

Divisional Play to be Emphasized!
It has been brought to my attention (and rightfully so) that teams have not played enough divisional games. At the meeting before the season, I assured teams that there would be a sufficient amount of divisional play. To this point in the season that has not been the case. This is due in large part to the fact that teams don’t want to play out of their preferred time slot and away from their preferred fields, it has been difficult to say the least to accomplish the goal of divisional play. Starting next week (6/8/08) and throughout the remainder of the season, I will be emphasizing divisional play for those teams that have not played a minimum of 60 – 65% of division games. This means that team will have to be more flexible in regards to where and when they play. But in order to preserve the integrity of the league this is a necessary step.
Finally I personally think that the idea of a five week at a time of even full schedule should be revisited for next season. It would alleviate much of this problem. Please remember that when you list the times and fields that you prefer, it is not a guarantee. It is merely a guideline. I make my best effort to accommodate teams on a weekly basis, but there must be balance in the schedule.

Week 7 Highlights (Memorial Day Weekend)
On Six Diamonds 1 Los Muchachos (LM) and the Rounders played two thrilling one run games that would end in the home teams final at bat with walk off hits. In game one Henry hit a game winning single up the middle to finish off a three run seventh inning that would see LM turn a two run deficit into a one run victory. In game two Dillon F. from Rounders hit a two out RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth to break a 12-12 tie. On Marine park field three Doomsday defeated Bed Stuy 11-7 in game one. Bed Stuy MVP’s were Isaac and Ish. In game two it was all pitching as Tee from Bed Stuy was out dueled by Frankie of Doomsday to a tune of 1-0.

Pitcher Eligibility Update
Due to requests from various teams I am modifying the pitcher eligibility. The rule as it currently stands makes it very difficult if not nearly impossible to get a third pitcher eligible for the playoffs. The pitcher eligibility requirement of three innings for a minimum of twelve (12) games will now be reduced to three innings for a minimum of eight (8) games. This move from twelve to eight allows more flexibility with game to game decisions with reducing the integrity of the regular season or playoffs.

"D" League Champion Crowned
Carnage and Phantoms play three games to decide the title. Game one was played close for the first three innings with Phantoms holding a 5-3 lead. but in the fourth added on four runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead and would go on to win game one 11-6. Carnage would not be denied their retrobution. And with their hige octane offense put up seven runs in the second inning and went on to win a 20-5 blowout to set up a decisive game three. With their seasons on the line neither team would back off in game three. After three innings the Phantoms lead 4-3. In the top of the fourth phantoms would score 5 runs only to have Carnage score 5 of their own to trail by one again. In the bottom of the seventh Phantoms led 10-9. Carnage would load the bases in the inning, prompting the Phantoms to bring in a fifth infielder and play three outfielders. The strategy would pay off when a ball hit up the middle that would have normally been a hit turned into a crushing game ending double play for Carnage.
Congratulations to Andrew and Phantoms players on an ourstanding Playoff and Championship series in route to becoming the 2007 Fall "D" League Champions.

Smith's Tavern Takes C-Division Championship
The C-division championship, played in October just like the pros, featured a spirited battle between Sportspage and Smiths Tavern.
In game 1, Sportspage scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning 8-3. In game two, Chris D., just off knee surgery, took the mound and received immediate run support. Smiths scored three runs in the first, but Sportspage came back with five in the third. Facing a 6-4 deficit in the top of the 6th inning, Smiths Tavern was able to scratch out a run to narrow the gap heading into the final frame. In the top of the seventh, Ralphie and Nate led off with a pair of singles, setting the stage for Timmy Reilly, who singled in the tying, and Jake P., who sent home the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly. An errant throw to the plate helped add another run and gave Smiths Tavern an 8-6 lead heading into the last of the seventh. Despite falling behind, Sportspage rallied back and loaded the bases with two outs, but the uprising fell short as the inning and game ended on a groundball to short.
Buoyed by their comeback, Smiths Tavern took an early 3-1 lead in game 3 before exploding for 10 runs in the third inning. The outburst was highlighted by Bryan L.s grandslam and provided all the support that Jerry would need as Smiths Tavern cruised to a 15-2 victory and their first ever BMSL championship. Smiths Tavern also celebrated the naming of Michael Fahmy and Bryan Lewis as C-division MVP and CY Young, respectively. Meanwhile, Sportspage capped of a fine season, displaying great sportsmanship in the face of defeat.
Please Be Advised . . .
The following items are of particular importance, so please make your team aware of them: 1) To be designated as a home team, all teams must have a set of bases with them. Although not required to take advantage of home team status, a pitching rubber and courtesy base are also strongly recommended. 2) The EH rule is designed to allow you have an extra hitter inserted into your lineup. Once your lineup has batted around, you MAY NOT add an EH. Also, the EH may be used to replace a player in the field only if that player is injured and all other options have been exhausted. 3) BMSL NOW USES THE F12 Clincher. To purchase Clinchers, contact Angel at Brooklyn Indoor Sports Center (718-965-0004) or SportsFever (718-449-2933). 4) All teams MUST clean up after themselves at ALL fields. Failure to do so could result in a fine being levied against you by the Parks Department. 5) Umpires Fees for the 2006 season are now $40/game or $80/double header.
In Case of Rain . . .
Remember to call the league hotline (718-361-3242) if you are uncertain about the status of your game. On days when weather threatens postponement, be sure to call the hotline at 7:30 am for further notice. Should you get a busy signal, keep trying to get through as other league members may be trying to access this information.
Also, please remember to bring maintenance equipment with you to the field on days when it has rained or there is a threat that it will rain. Should a field be in poor condition, having a rake, shovel and bucket on hand will enhance your chances of playing.

Playoff Highlights - Hitmen Win A-Division Championship
A-Division
The Hitmen captured the 2003 A-division championship by taking 2 of 3 from Lethal Weapon. In game 1, the Hitmen were being shutout 1-0 in the sixth, but two runs in the bottom of the inning were enough to steal the victory and make Lethal Weapon's Al Horowitz a hard luck loser. In game 2, it was Lethal Weapon's turn to play comeback by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth to overcome a 3-0 deficit. In the rubber match, Hitmen scored three runs in the first inning and held on for a 5-1 victory to earn the Division Championship.
B-Division
The Cobras and Pirates played a low scoring three game series filled with drama and tension. In game 1, the Cobras used the excellent pitching of Joey Attard and some timely hitting to take the opener 4-1. In game 2, Mike Levine pitched 6 shutout innings for the Cobras and Ian Beaton slugged a home run, but the story of the game was the Pirates dramatic come back from two runs down with two out and nobody on base. The 3-2 comeback made a winner out of Bob Cederstrom who pitched two masterful games in the series. In game 3, the teams were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the third, but Mike Scott belted a three run homerun to cap off a four run rally. The outburst was more than enough for victory as Joey once again pitched a masterpiece.
In the other semifinal, the Thunder swept DNA by scores of 15-0 and 5-3. In game 1, Manny Aquafreddy spun a shutout and was backed up by an offensive outburst. In game 2, DNA took an early 2-0 lead, but Thunder bounced back with five runs to take the game and the series.
C-Division
Smiths Tavern won its quarterfinal series from Zoloft, taking two straight by scores of 14-1 and 4-3. In game 1, Bryan L. had a no hitter through five innings and cruised to an easy victory. In game 2, Jerry pitched a strong five innings and with the game tied 3-3 in the top of the 7th, Ralphie O. singled in the go ahead run with two outs. Bryan earned the win in relief as Smiths Tavern advanced.
In the other contests, all sweeps, Sportspage bested the Red Barons (8-0 and 11-7); Phantoms held off Team NYL (9-8 and 11-7); and Quiet Storm squeezed by the Mud Ducks in two tightly contested games (5-3 and 11-9).
BMSL 2002 Fall Champions, MVPs Crowned
In the A-division Bobby Reedy's Lead Headz overcame the perennially strong Hitmen in two games. In the first game, the Lead Headz needed 8 innings to squeak by with a 2-1 victory. In the second game, the Lead Headz jumped out early and then coasted to a 9-4 clinching victory. The championship comes for the Lead Headz in their first BMSL season.
In the B-division, the third time was a charm for the Pirates as they swept Los Bravos del Bronx to capture their first ever BMSL championship. In game one, the Pirates scored 12 runs in the first three innings in support of pitcher Bob Cederstrom, who pitched a 2-hitter. With the game well out of the Bravos' reach, the Pirates coasted to 14-2 victory. In game two, the Pirates scored three runs in the very first inning and pitcher Carmine Blasi turned in another stellar performance enroute to a 9-3 clinching win. Special congratulations go out to manager John Mannino, who through years of near misses and disappointing finishes finally guided his team to the top. Also, special congratulations were also in order for Bravos' manager Celso Cedeno, who led his Bravos to the championship game in their first BMSL season. Finally, the Pirates dedicated the championship, just as they did all of their games since the summer, to their fallen brother Rob Volino (always with us #51).
In the C-division, DNA and the Bounty Hunters put on an impressive display of pressure softball. In game 1 of the series, DNA jumped out ahead by scoring 4 runs in the second inning, but the Bounty Hunters slowly chipped away until the score was tied 5-5 in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, DNA captured the game 6-5 thanks to a clutch, two out run scoring hit. In the second game, DNA once again took an early lead, jumping out ahead 6-2 in the second. The score stood at 9-5 in the sixth, but the Bounty Hunters refused to quit. They scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and loaded the bases with two outs. A line drive ticketed for centerfield, however, was grabbed by a diving DNA outfielder, and the comeback was extinguished. The dramatic 9-8 victory gave DNA its first championship in its third BMSL season. In the previous two seasons, DNA had combined for only 4 wins, so the victory was a testament to hard work and perseverance.
