4/27/2009 Braves Weekly. Farewell to the seniors.
Varsity Baseball – Week of April 19: In the final week of the regular season, the Braves fought hard against Centennial and Capital, amassing 1 win against 3 losses. These final four games brought the Varsity’s record to 8-18 overall and 4-16 in the 5A SIC. Due to changes in the process this year, the bottom three teams in the 5A SIC standings will not play in the District Tournament. So, for Boise and two other teams, their seasons are over. In the first series of the week, the Braves dropped two games to Centennial, 9-5 and 7-6. The Varsity nine held their own through the 3rd inning of the first game, tying the score 4-4 on RBI hits by Aaron Smith and Buddy Ford. Centennial managed runs in the 4th and 5th bringing the score to 6-4. Trey Cochran pitched the 6th and shut down the Patriots, but they scored 3 more in the top of the 7th to put the game away. Boise rallied briefly when Marlowe Peter’s RBI double scored Gregg Simonds, but the Braves could not score again. Ford led the Boise hitters with 2 hits and 2 RBI; Tucker Barney also got 2 hits. In the second game, the Braves gave the Pats a run for their money in an extra inning (8) thriller. Centennial jumped out to a 5-1 lead through 4 innings, but the Braves plated 5 to take the lead in the top of the 5th. Doubles by Riley Broderick and Peter, as well as hits by Barney, Simonds, Ford, and Stephen Doan did the job. The score remained tied through the top of the 8th, with good pitching and defense prevailing on both sides. However, in the bottom of the 8th, with 2 outs, Centennial strung together a double and a single to win. Hitting leaders for the Braves included Doan (4-4), Peter (3-4, 2 RBI), and Ford (2-4).
At the end of the week, Boise took on Capital and surprised the Eagles 8-7. When Capital amassed a 7-0 through 5 innings, things looked bleak for the Braves. In the 6th, the bats awoke a little with a single by Broderick and a 2-run HR by Cochran. Simonds walked, stole second, and scored on an error bringing the score to 7-3 Capital. After Dylan Lange retired the Eagles in the 6th with no runs, the Braves returned to the plate with a vengeance. Ford singled and Schroeder singled, to put two on, but Capital managed to get two outs on the Braves. Broderick then singled to load the bases, and Cochran promptly slammed a double off the left field fence to bring the score to 7-5. Capital brought in a relief pitcher – perhaps an unwise move – since Simonds crushed the first pitch for a 3-run HR to give the Braves an 8-7 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Lange pitched as determinedly and effectively as he had all year, retiring the Eagles in order for the comeback win! For the Friday game, Capital showed why it is one of the better teams in the conference this year by defeating the Braves 11-1 in 5 innings. Boise hitting leaders were Doan (2-3), Peter (1-2, 2B), and Ford (1-2, RBI). Importantly, Friday was senior night and a large home crowd said farewell to our group of 8 members of the class of 2009:
· Marlowe Peter – 4-year Varsity starter at catcher and member of the 2008 5A State Championship team.
· Gregg Simonds – 3-year Varsity player, 2-year starter at 3rd base and member of the 2008 5A State Championship team.
· Stephen Doan – 1-year Varsity player and lettered in football, basketball, and track.
· Steven Carson - 1-year Varsity player, played 3 years in the program, and lettered in football.
· Buddy Ford - 1-year Varsity player, played 3 years in the program, and lettered in wrestling.
· Jake White - 1-year Varsity player, played 3 years in the program, and lettered in football.
· Mike Christensen – 1-year Boise Varsity player and 3 years on Minico varsity
· Stephen Detty -1-year Varsity player, played 3 years in the program
Thanks for the memories, boys! We will miss you. Best of luck in your future endeavors. – Kevin PeterFriday, April 24

Varsity Baseball – Week of April 12, 2009 – It was another rough week for the re-building Braves, going 1-3 in conference games. Against Meridian, the Varsity dropped the first game of the week 8-5. Boise jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on a single by Sean Schroeder and a triple by Gregg Simonds, only to have the Mavericks tie the game. The Braves scored two in the top of the 3rd on consecutive hits by Tucker Barney, Schroeder, Trey Cochran, and Simonds. However, by the bottom of the 3rd , Meridian led 8-3 on 9 hits. After coming in relief in the 4th, Riley Broderick shut down the hard hitting Mavericks for the rest of the game. The Braves mounted a small rally in the 7th, scoring 2 runs, but the effort fell short. Hitting leaders for Boise included Barney (3-4), Schroeder (3-4), and Simonds (2-3). In the rubber match Boise beat Meridian 17-15 in dramatic fashion with a 2-run walk-off HR by Simonds in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs. It was a seesaw battle with the Braves trailing 4-3 through three innings. While the Mavs jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the top of the 4th, the Braves roared ahead 9-7 in the bottom of the inning on hits by Aaron Smith, Marlowe Peter, Buddy Ford, Broderick, and Schroeder. After the Mavs brought the score to 9-8 Braves in the top of the 5th, Boise responded with 5 runs on a single by Peter and a grand-slam HR by Cochran, making the score Boise 14-Meridian 8. A big 6th inning gave Meridian a 15-14 lead, with Boise tying the game on Ford’s second RBI single of the night. In the 7th, Simonds was the hero on the mound and at the plate. He dominated the Mav’s in the top of the 7th, striking out two and holding them hitless. Then, after two Brave strikeouts, Cochran reached on an error. Meridian then brought in a relief pitcher to face Simonds who promptly crushed the ball over the left field fence, winning the game for the Braves. Lange, Christensen, Broderick, and Simonds combined for the win on the mound. Hitting leaders included Barney (2-4), Schroeder (1-3), Cochran (1-3, GS HR), Simonds (2-4, HR), Smith (2-3), Peter (3-4), and Ford (2-2).
In the second series of the week, the Braves faced a powerful Eagle team and dropped two games 14-4 and 11-2. In the two games, Boise managed only 10 total hits. The hitting highlight for the series was a 2-run HR by Dylan Lange. The Braves now move into the final week of the conference season with an overall record of 7-15 and series against Centennial and Capital. Senior night will be at Jack Acree Field on Friday night at 6 pm. – Kevin PeterFriday, April 17

Varsity Baseball – Week of April 5, 2009 – The Braves went 1-3 during conference play this week, bringing their record in the SIC to 2-10 and 6-12 overall. It should be noted that the Varsity has lost 7 games by 1 run this year, so the boys are keeping it close and are improving all the time. This week was no exception, starting with two 1-run losses to Rocky Mountain. In the first game, the Brave generated 14 runs on 14 hits, but could not mange to hang on in the 9th, losing 15-14. Walks, hit batters, and errors plagued the Braves defensively, despite the prodigious offensive output. Eight of 9 Boise starters scored a run, contributed a hit, or knocked a run in (or a combination of all three). Offensive leaders were Gregg Simonds (1-2, 4 RBI) and Aaron Smith (3-4, 2 RBI). In the second game, Rocky Mountain edged the Braves 5-4 in regulation in a much tighter contest. Boise jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 3rd, but gave up 4 runs to Rocky Mountain in the bottom of the inning on 3 hits and 3 errors. Their opponents plated another run in the 4th and hung on for the victory. A one-in-a-million triple play ended a 7th inning rally for the Braves. Schroeder led the Braves at the plate with 2 hits, while Barney, Cochran, Simonds, Smith, Peter, Thompson, Ford, and Broderick all got 1 hit.
In the second series of the week, the Braves were hungry and pumped to take on Mountain View. On Thursday, the Brave carried a 5-2 lead through the 5th based on the hitting of Barney, Cochran, and Simonds, and strong pitching performances by Dylan Lange and Mike Christensen. However, the Toros scored 4 in the bottom of the 6th for the go ahead runs. Boise managed only 1 base runner in the 6th and 7th and could not overtake Mountain View. The snake-bitten Braves were looking for revenge in the game on Friday and got it, beating the Toros 10-8. Polito started on the bump for the Braves and combined with Christensen, Smith, and Lange to keep Mountain View in check. Hitting leaders for the Braves included Simonds (2-4), Barney (1-3, 2 RBI), Smith (1-3, 2 RBI), and Jake White (2-2, 3 runs scored). – Kevin PeterFriday, April 10

Varsity Baseball--The Braves Varsity dropped two games to SIC powerhouse Timberline this week. In the first game, Timberline shut down almost all Braves hitting while pounding out a 10-0 victory. Only Aaron Smith managed a single for the Braves. In the second game, the Braves bats awoke, garnering 8 runs and 11 hits against the Wolves, despite losing 14-8. Timberline jumped out to a 6 run lead in the top of the 1st inning, but the Braves started to climb back with a walk to Trey Cochran and an RBI single by Marlowe Peter. The Wolves extended their lead to 10-1 in the top of the 2nd. Again, a walk to Sean Schroeder, and consecutive singles by Riley Broderick and Tucker Barney plated a run, making the score 10-2. Cochran, taking over pitching in the 2nd, shut down the Wolves in the remainder of the 2nd and all of the 3rd. Broderick then took over on the mound for the 4th and 5th, holding the Wolves to 1 hit and 1 run. In the meantime, the Braves slowly mounted an attempted comeback. In the 3rd, Gregg Simonds doubled and scored on an error. Despite singles by Sean Schroeder and Barney, the Braves were held scoreless in the 4th, but Simonds rocketed a shot over the left-center wall for a homerun blast in the 5th, bringing the score to 11-4. In the 6th, Boise closed the gap to 11-7, on walks to Schroeder and Broderick and singles by Barney and Peter. Unfortunately, the Wolves managed 3 runs in the top of the 7th to pull away for good. Barney’s RBI double in the bottom of the 7th made the score 14-8, but the Braves could not sustain the rally. Hitting leaders for the Braves included Barney (4-5, 2 RBI) Peter (2-4, 2 RBI), Simonds (3-3, HR and RBI), Schroeder (1-3, 3 runs scored), and Broderick (1-3, 1 run scored).– Kevin Peter |

3/30/2009 Braves Weekly
| Varsity Baseball--Weeks of March 15-28: After starting with a 2-2 record, the Braves Varsity played 8 more games over the next two weeks, including a Spring Break tournament. During this period, the young squad began to gel and played a much improved, if inconsistent, brand of baseball, amassing an overall record of 5-7 (1-5 SIC). In a pairing against rival Borah, the Braves dropped two games, 4-3 and 9-4. In the first game, Tucker Barney stood out from an otherwise weak hitting performance garnering a double and a triple. Gregg Simonds, Sean Schroeder, and Ben White each singled. Kyle Polito and Simonds had strong performances in relief and kept the Lions off the scoreboard. In the second game, Aaron Smith led the Braves with a 2 for 3 performance at the plate and 4 innings on the mound. Barney, Cochran, and Ben White were the only other Braves to get hits.
At the end of the week, the Braves split the series with Vallivue. In the first game, the team dropped a heartbreaker 12-11 in the bottom of the 7th. Plagued by growing darkness at Vallivue and some poor calls, the Boise nine could not hold their strong hitting opponents. Simonds (3 for 4), Carson (2 for 4), and Riley Broderick (2 for 3) led the Braves at the plate. On Friday, the Varsity rebounded and pummeled Vallivue for 9 runs and 12 hits, winning 9-3 at home. Dylan Lange’s strongest pitching performance of the season held the Falcons to 5 hits over 6 innings and Riley Broderick shut down the opposing hitters in the last two innings. Every Boise starter contributed either a hit or RBI, with Barney (2 for 4), Simonds (2 for 4), Jimmy Thompson (2 for 3) and Aaron Smith (3 for 3) leading the hitting for the Braves. Over Spring Break, the Braves went 2-2 in the long-running Bucks Bags tournament with wins over Hillcrest (6-1) and Middleton (14-9) as well as losses to SIC rival Caldwell (3-2) and Columbia (15-9). Overall, the Boise Varsity produced positive performances that bode well for the future, with many younger players contributing in each game. Junior Trey Cochran led all |

The remainder of this team is composed of six Seniors (Buddy Ford, Jake White, Stephen Detty , Steven Carson, Stephen Doan, and Mike Christensen), three Juniors (Dylan Lange, Aaron Smith and Kyle Polito), and four sophomores (Riley Broderick, Sean Schroeder, Jimmy Thompson, and Ben White).
