NEW YEAR'S EVE O-HECK "LOSER" CHAMPIONS ... UPDATED 01/01/2012
The RFNGD "New Year's Eve Party" O-Heck game has produced a number of "loser" champions. The loser of the annual O-Heck card game is awarded the traveling bowling pin “booby” prize affectionately known as "Dana's Loser Award." The winner must proudly display the trophy for one year in his or her home before returning it to the party site on New Year's Eve. After winning the award four straight years, the name of the trophy was modified to add "Dana's" to the title block in honor of Dana Sparks.

Here is the listing of the "loser" champions for each of the tournaments. Multiple "losers" are designated with their total number of losses inside the parenthesis next to their most recent victory.

2010 NEW YEAR'S EVE SUMMARY

On December 31, 2010, the 2010 O-HECK game included two decks of standard 52 cards (104 cards total) plus 20 rounds of action.   The card distribution is based on the number of party participants, and with 12 participants, the number of cards dealt during each round was as follows.   1,2,3,4,4,5,6,6,7,8,8,7,6,6,5,4,4,3,2,1

Please note that for 10 or fewer party participants, the card distribution is as follows: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1.

For future games of 12 participants, the card distribution will be as follows: 1,2,3,4,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,7,7,6,6,5,4,3,2,1.

Seating was assigned by selecting a card and going clockwise from the Ace spot which is designated for the scorekeeper followed by the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King.  The initial dealer was then determined by passing out the same cards, one to each player, with the player receiving the Ace card starting the deal.  Subsequent deals are passed player to player in clockwise order.

During game play, if both cards of the same suit are played during a specific round, the first card played is the winner card.

Following the O-HECK game, the 12 party participants were split into two groups: women and men.  The six women played the card game GOLF while the six men played in the centuries old dice game, FARKLE.  GOLF was introduced in 2008, and FARKLE debuted in 2009.

GOLF was played until the first player scored 100 or more points.  Once the 100 score was broken, the low score was declared the winner.  8 rounds were required to break the scoring bogey, and below are the final scores.

Although there are several variations to the rules, the RFNGD followed the rules stated on the rules sheet that came with the game with one exception: we went into the final round once a 10,000 point bogey was hit.  16 rounds were required to break the scoring bogey, and here are the final scores.

In addition to O-HECK, GOLF, and FARKLE, the Men returned to championship form by defeating the Women in the commodities game, PIT.  In a game of shifting momentum, the Men jumped out to a commanding +385 to -55 score after 10 rounds.  With the Men only 15 points shy of the 400 point bogey, the Women shifted into high gear and pulled to within 15 points (+335 to +320) after the 20th round.  The Men regrouped in time to hit the 400 point bogey in the 22nd round, defeating the Women by the final score of +400 to +300.  The Men never trailed in this one, but the completion was fierce … and loud … throughout!  The Men’s victories were earned by Blair (6), Conrad (3), Richard (2), Ron (2), and Tim (0).  The Women’s victories were earned by Dana (5), Paula (2), Chelle (1), Trudi (1), and Kathy (0).  Altogether, the Men accumulated 880 positive points against 480 negative points while the Women garnered 600 positive points against 300 negative points.

With 10 PIT players (Phil and Peggy did not participate), a creative method of combining the “original (old)” game cards along with the “new” game cards was used.  Three commodities were used from the “new” game (Coffee-80, Sugar-65, and Soybeans-55), three commodities were used from the “old” game (Rye-70, Hay-50, and Flax-40), and four commodities were combined from the “new” and “old” games (Wheat-100 ~ 4new+5old, Barley-85 ~ 5new+4old, Corn-75 ~ 4new+5old, and Oats-60 ~ 5new/4old).  Both the Bear and Bull cards came from the “new” game.

The centuries old dice game, Farkle, was introduced during the 2009 New Year’s Eve party.  Although there are several variations to the rules, the RFNGD followed the rules stated on the rules sheet that came with the game with one exception: we went into the final round once a 5000 point bogey was hit. Here are the final scores:

In addition to O-Heck, Farkle, and GOLF, the Women reversed recent history and completely dominated the Men in the commodities game, PIT.  The Women never trailed in this one and won seven of the 12 rounds, including the first four.  The final score was 460 to 170.  The Women’s victories were earned by Paula (5), Dana (2), and Trudi (0).  The Men’s victories were earned by Blair (3), Ron (1), and Tim (1).  Altogether, the MEN accumulated 160 negative points while the Women garnered only 80 negative points.

In addition to O-Heck and GOLF, the Men continued their dominance over the Women by defeating the Women in the commodities game, PIT.  After falling behind after four rounds 155 to -35, the Men won 11 of the next 14 rounds to defeat the Women in a total of 18 rounds of action by the final score of 440 to 125.  The Men’s victories were earned by Blair (4), Ron (4), Tim (3), and Richard (1).  The Women's victories were earned by Paula (3), Dana (2), Chelle (1), and Trudi (0).  Altogether, the MEN accumulated 360 negative points while the Women garnered 320 negative points.

In addition to O-Heck, the Women ended three years of futility by defeating the Men not once, but twice, in the commodities game, PIT. The Men struggled to adjust to the less "manly" commodities that are used in the new game purchased by the Sparks in the off season to replace the brutally damaged original game, and the Women really took advantage by exceeding the 400 target score in both games. In game #1, the Women took command early and cruised to a 445 to -15 score in only 9 rounds of action. In game #2, the Women made an amazing comeback from a 370 to 15 deficit in round 13 to win 430 to 270 in 20 total game rounds. The Women's victories were earned by Dana (7), Paula (4), Chelle (3), Trudi (2), and D.J. (0). The Men's victories were earned by Tim (6), Richard (3), Ron (2), and Blair (2). The key to both Women's victories, though, was the Women's ability to limit negative scoring. While the Men accumulated an astounding 660 of negative points throughout the evening, the Women were nearly half that with 340 of negative scoring.



All in all, the unlikely hero on this evening was none other than Dana Sparks!! Having been the big "Loser" in 6 of the previous 9 O-Heck tournaments, Dana played nearly flawlessly in coming up only two points short of a record high score while earning the overall victory! On an all time high, Dana then was victorious in 7 of the Women's 16 winning PIT rounds to lead her team to victory.

In addition to O-Heck, the Men defeated the Women in "PIT" for the third straight year by the score of 420 to 320. This was an amazing comeback victory for the men as they trailed at one point 365 to 55, with the winner going out at 400!

2004 NEW YEAR'S EVE SUMMARY
On December 31, 2004, the 2004 O-Heck game included two decks of standard 52 cards (104 cards total) plus 20 rounds of action ... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 ... and with the first face card beginning the deal. Seating was assigned by selecting a card and going clockwise from the Ace spot which is designated for the scorekeeper followed by the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. If both cards of the same suit are played during a specific round, the first card played is the winner card.

03T – Ron Ernstberger ... 177 -- 2nd ~ -1

In addition to O-Heck, the Men defeated the Women in "PIT" for the second straight year by the score of 420 to 175. Finally, the Men made it a clean sweep for the evening by thumping the Women in “MAD GRAB” by the score of 28 to 16.
