League Eligibilty Change

There is an important change this year that will impact roughly 25% of our registered players. In order to comply with the age requirements adopted by every sanctioned baseball and softball organization in the State, we are changing the league eligibility dates for all registrants. These organizations had made these changes a few years ago and we did not change our dates to avoid inconvenience for some of our players. However, circumstances have changed that has necessitated this action. Most of our leagues are playing other towns as part of our regular season in addition to the traveling seasons. We are consistently competing against teams that have older players. This is not being done merely to enhance competitiveness but also to reduce the risk of injury and lessen liability.

Some players who are affected by this change will probably not be happy; they may be upset as the players they had been playing with advance to the next league. This is an unfortunate and unavoidable consequence of this action. However, the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term pain. Our players will be competing on a more level playing field.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but it is a necessary step for us to align ourselves with the established guidelines throughout the area. Below are the amended cut-off dates. Thank you for your understanding.

League Age Birth Dates

 T-Ball 5-6 5/1/02 - 12/31/03

Pee Wee 7-8 5/1/00 - 4/30/02

Willie Mays 9-10 5/1/98 - 4/30/00

Pee Wee Reese 11-12 5/1/96 - 4/30/98

Babe Ruth 13-15 5/1/93 - 4/30/96

Girls Softball 9-10 5/1/98 - 4/30/00

Girls Softball 11-12 5/1/96 - 4/30/98

Girls Softball 13-15 5/1/93 - 4/30/96

Equipment change
Equipment Change Aluminum Bats – We will still be using aluminum bats this year. However, in response to the growing concern over safety regarding the use of aluminum bats, the BBO has implemented strict guidelines. This change applies only to the boys Mays and Reese leagues. No aluminum bat may be used that exceeds a minus seven differential between length and weight. For example, a 28-inch bat may weigh no less than 21 ounces. The BBO will supply two age-appropriate bats per team for the players to use. Players may still use their own bats as long as they comply with the new rules. Umpires will be checking bats for compliance. We realize that many players may have bats that do not comply with the new guidelines and that these bats may have been very expensive. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but there really is no reasonable alternative. Many towns have already switched to wood bats and legislation mandating wood bats is pending. We do not intend to switch to wood bats unless it becomes the high school standard or state law. The high school standard for aluminum bats is currently minus three. We have taken this proactive step to ease the possible transition and to enhance the safety of your children.
Gray Uniform Pants – No player will be allowed to play unless they are wearing gray uniform pants. This is not a change in equipment policy, but this year it will be strictly enforced by the umpires. This does not apply to T-Ball. We intend to have uniform pants available at the snack bar on opening day and throughout the season for $6 a pair or two pair for $10. We will also encourage parents to bring down any old pants or cleats in decent condition to the snack bar on opening day for players to take for free.
