Boca Shines at Surf Cup
The Girls State Cup Champions, Boca 91, competed in the San Diego Surf Cup, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country at the end of July. In their first game, they faced the Nevada State Champions, NFC Tabagators. Boca controlled this game with goals by: Toni Fragoso, on a free kick, Katie Furtado, assisted by Timery Mueller and Mueller, assisted by Jen Ericson, for a final score of 3-0. The 91s then faced a very athletic New York ODP team, but Boca prevailed with a goal from Rachel Mercik, assisted by Mallory Creamer, for a final score of 1-0. Next up was the host team, San Diego Surf White. This team gave Boca a run for their money, but ended in a 0-0 tie. Boca won their bracket, giving them the right to face So Cal powerhouse, So-Cal Blues in the quarterfinals. The Blues came out strong in the first 5 minutes, with a goal, which was called off-side. Boca then held until the last 5 minutes of the second half, when Rachel Mercik scored unassisted, for a final score of 1-0, and a trip to the semi-finals to face Real So-Cal, formerly So-Cal United. Boca scored in the first half, with a beautiful, unassisted goal by Mercik. Real So-Cal countered in the second half by sneaking in the first goal of the tournament on Boca’s tough defense, to tie the game at the end of regulation, and send the game into Golden Goal overtime. Real struck right away with a goal to win the game, and end Boca’s Cinderella run in Surf Cup. Boca’s tough defense, led by goalie Erin Rost, allowed only 2 goals the entire tournament, against some of the strongest teams in the nation.
Boca’s defense is: Sierra Casa, Rachelle Rodman, Jen Ericson, Nikki Wilson and Katie Furtado. The Boca 91 team has already been invited to attend the Girls Surf Cup Tournament in November, and can’t wait to do even better there.
