Boca '91 Girls Reach Regional Semi-Finals
LAS VEGAS, NV -- The River City United Boca Jrs '91 girls team, playing under Cavitt Academy, survived the Las Vegas heat to advance to the semi-finals of the US Club Regional Tournament this past weekend before falling to #20 Glendora SC.
Boca Jrs. opened the tournament with a 5-0 victory over the Colorado Rush. A hat trick (three goals) by forward Timery Mueller led the team over the State Champions from Colorado. Alli Kelly and Mallory Creamer also contributed goals in the first game of the tournamnet Saturday.
"It was a great way to open the tournament," said head coach Gabriel Bolton. "I think the team came out relaxed and ready to play."
Heat FC was the opponent for Boca on Sunday. Despite some early difficulty in breaking down the Heat FC defense, the team rolled to a 7-0 victory. Mueller opened the scoring once again with a powerfull header off of a brilliant left footed cross by Kelly. It would be her first of two goals in the first half.
That goal was followed by a goal from a corner kick. Alex Del Agua drove a ball near post which midfielder Rachel Mercik volleyed into the back post. It was the first of two assists for Del Agua on the day. She also scored a goal at the end of the first half on a free kick.
Boca added three goals in the second period. Once again they scored off of a set play when Creamer connected on a free kick from 20 yards out to make it 5-0. Even goalkeeper Erin Rost got into the action with an assist. Her 60 yard punt was perfectly placed to Kelly who ran onto the ball and finished it. Creamer scored the final goal of the game with an assist from Teagan Seman.
Monday morning Boca Jrs. battled the 20th ranked team in the Nation according to the National Soccer Rankings, Glendora SC. Despite an outstanding performance, Boca Jrs. gave up a penalty kick with 5 minutes remaining in the contest that Glendora converted. Glendora struck again with only moments remaining in the contest as Boca Jrs. was pushing forward for the tying goal.
"We really played well in the morning against Glendora," said Bolton. "We had numerous chances to score and we were a bit unlucky not to have the game end at least in a 0-0 tie."
With the 2-1 record, Boca Jrs. advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals Monday evening. They again faced Glendora. This time Glendora won 1-0.
Bolton credited the defensive efforts of Rost, Del Agua, Jen Ericson, Nicole Wilson, Rachel Rodman, Gabby Sanders, Stephanie Collins, and Courtney Strombeck with limiting Glendora to very few chances. He also credited midfielders Strombeck, Seman, Mercik, Danielle Lovato, and Bri Levinson with helping create many goal scoring chances. Forwards Creamer, Kelly, Natalie Perez, and Mueller were commended for a tremendous effort as well.
"We played a great game," said Bolton. "We defended well all over the field, we connected passes and we created numerous chances to score. I also thought that many of our players performed at the highest level I've ever seen them perform. It was nice to see so many players step up in a big game. I know we leave Regionals with the confidence of knowing we can play with the best teams in the country."
