Blast Off to Fast Start in National League
Red Controls Fate After Clean Sheet in Atlanta
The Blast U17's showed their toughness in the opening weekend of National League games in Atlanta, GA.  Determined to get off to a faster start this year, the Red were the only team to win 3 games in the first weekend of play and finished with 10 Points to lead the Blue division.  The Blast opened play against the Chicago Fire and used the 2-1 win as a catalyst for the rest of the weekend.  The Red turned back JB Marine 1-0 in the second match and then played a very physical VSA squad to a 0-0 tie.  The girls finished the weekend by taking care of NSA 3-0.  The Blast will travel to Las Vegas in March to conclude National League play.

League Rebound
Red Wins Five of Six to Secure Third Place Finish
After a tough start to league play this Spring, the U16s have gone 5-1 to secure third place in the MRL Premier Division with one game left to play.  The latest notch in the win column came against a scrappy KSA bunch who had not lost a game in the league since the end of March.  The Blast managed to dispose of KSA 1-0 to improve to 5-3 overall for the season.  In their last six matches, the girls have shutout the opponent four times and allowed 2 goals while scoring 13.

Girls Give Strong Effort in State Cup Title Game
The final result was not what the U16s had hoped for when they began their quest for a second consecutive State Cup championship.  Nonetheless, the girls handled a disappointing 0-1 outcome with the class and pride that only comes with an appreciation for the game itself and an understanding of how hard it is to get to the summit for three consecutive years.  It is this character that makes us all proud of this group and gives us a great sense that they will be back, to this very same game, with the expectation to win it again.  Congratulations to Coach Mo and our 2011 State Cup Finalist.

One "Final" Step Left for U16s
Blast Roll 5-1 in State Semifinal
For the third consecutive year, it will be an all-Columbus State Cup Final when the Blast meet OP Eagles ECNL on Sunday.  The Blast and OP have met each other in the Final the previous two years.  The U16s had a huge challenge in front of them in the Semifinal match against Warren County.  Beaten pretty easily by the the Blast a few weeks earlier in MRL, Warren County came out strong and controlled the play early.  A nice converted cross by the Red staked them to a 1-0 lead but the United kept dictating the offensive pressures, gaining a number of corner opportunities that were denied by the Blast GK.  A couple of pretty goals in the latter half of the first 40 propelled the U16s to a 3-0 halftime lead and seemed to deflate the WC spirit.  Warren County would trim the lead to 3-1 in the 50th minute but never got closer as the Blast buckled down and finished twice more to roll 5-1.

Blast Advance to State Cup Semifinals
Record Clean Sheet in Group Play
For the fifth consecutive year, the Red are headed to the semifinal round of State Cup.  The defending State Cup champions will need to overcome a familiar foe in Warren County in order to get an opportunity to repeat.  Ironically, the Blast and Warren County have been dance partners in this round for the past four years with the Blast winning the last two meetings.  To get to this point in the tournament, the U16s were efficient on both sides of the ball in winning all three of their preliminary matches.  In group play the Blast struck for 16 goals and allowed 2.

The Quest to Repeat Begins
U16s Romp in Opener of State Cup
The format has changed for State Cup this year as the preliminary rounds are now decided by a round robin group play.  The defending State Cup champion Blast FC embarked on the journey to repeat at Westerville Central HS against the Crew Juniors.  Coming off an MRL Premier victory last night in Medina, the Blast started the game looking a little sluggish.  Fortunately, the first goal in the 12th minute of play reenergized the ladies on their way to a 3-0 margin at recess.  The Red netted 5 more in the second half to waltz through the opener by a final of 8-0.  Next up for the Blast is the Ohio Galaxies 94 Elite.
