WE ARE 'CHEERFUL LEADERS!'

WE ARE LEADERS!

BYFA - Cheer does various community service projects throughout the year and it is called 'Cheerful Leaders!' If anyone is interested in helping with this please contact team mom, Heather Palmer, and let her know. She will let the organization know that you want to help.

The 'Cheerful Leaders' projects are for all grades, 1st-7th, and everyone is encouraged to participate in at least one service project to promote being GREAT LEADERS. After all isn't that what a cheerleader is... a LEADER! Please note that no one is required to participate! This is just a great chance to teach our children more than just athletics.

Cheerful Leaders Pledge

As a Cheerful Leader with the Bixby Youth Football Association, I pledge to become a model citizen by upholding the guidelines of the organization.

·        Through my actions I will become an example to others and become a leader in our community.

·        I realize that everything I say and do reflect not only on myself, but also on our organization as a whole so I pledge to always speak and act in a responsible way.

·        I am part of a team and as a team everyone relies on each other to succeed; therefore, I pledge to be kind, helpful, respectful and considerate in my actions.

·        Being a Cheerful Leader means assisting in the community so that others may benefit from our help; therefore, I will be helpful in all ways.

·        Standards for being a cheerful leader are:
                Respect- of self and others
Good Sportsmanship – at all times
Being on Time        - to games and practices
Participating - Being present for the team
Selflessness- By helping and not bullying others

The following are some of the details about each event:

Cheerful Leader Program for 2008
•        School Supply Drive
•        Trash Pickup (TBA )
•         Canned Food Drive (TBA)

School supply drive drop off locations are as follows; at practice, Drug Warehouse, Walgreens, and Doc's Grocery Store. The items will be picked up on Monday, August 11th and seperated by the cheer board, to be distributed to each school in the district. Two girls from each school, who exemplify cheerful leaders behavior, will be chosen to deliver the supplies to their school.

COMMUNICATING WITH TEAM MEMBERS PROPERLY... MEDIATITING WITH YOUR PEERS

In a perfect world this might not have to be written, or would it? If everyone always got along, would that mean we all agreed on everything? Wouldn't that make for a very boring world? Disagreeing with others isn't necessarily a bad thing. If done constructively it can even be a positive experience. Disagreements can bring on change and foster new ideas. So, it really isn't that important that you have disagreements with your teammates, it's the way you agree to handle them and resolve any conflicts that matters the most.

Resolving Cheerleading Conflicts and Disagreements

· Communicate openly with everyone (teammates and coaches) People cannot read your mind. If you don't agree with something, you should say so.

· Don't discuss your problem with people not directly involved in hopes of getting them to side with you. Go to the source of the problem.

· Don't allow the problem to grow or get worse. The more angry you get, the harder it will be to find a resolution and for team to move on or past the problem.

· Try to keep the situation private. Don't confront the person in front of a group. Some people will react differently in a one on one situation than they will in a group.

· Stick to the facts; don't let your emotions become the center of the conversation.

· Express yourself and the problem clearly and in a non-accusing way.

· Give the other person a chance to respond without interrupting.

· Listen closely.

· Don't assume or interpret what the other person is saying or has said.

· Make sure you understand what is being said, even if you have to repeat it back.

· Try to put yourself in the other person's position.

· Don't name call, threaten or intimidate. These actions don't solve problems. They usually just make them worse.

· Remember how you say something is almost as important as what you're saying. You don't have to raise your voice to be heard. Save the yelling for your cheering.

· Use appropriate body language and facial expressions.

· Be willing to accept and take responsibility for your part of the problem.

· After each side has had an opportunity to speak and respond, move forward to what can be done to solve the problem.

· Stay on track, and try to find some common goals you can both agree on.

· Be willing to compromise, if it's appropriate, and try to choose a solution everyone can live with.

· If you still can't agree on a solution or work the problem out, ask someone else to step in and help resolve the conflict.

Everyone agrees that it’s much better for team members to get along, but if a conflict does arise, we should be prepared and agree on how to disagree in advance. When you have a positive attitude it's easier to shout "We’re #1" for the football team when they are losing. Take a negative situation and turn it into something constructive. It will not only make you a stronger person, it will help you build a stronger relationship with the team and resolve any conflicts that come your way.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES!

The following parents are NYSCA certified and will be needed if an emergency arises: Brenda, Heather, Keith, and Kristen.  These parents have a red folder with them at every game with the roster, medical information on every girl and an emergency call sheet with the addresses of every game.  If there is an incident then any ONE of these parents will make the 911 call.

All parent spotters need to stay, if the coach has to leave with the injured, and make sure all the girls in their stunt group are picked up before leaving themselves.  Please get to know the names and faces of the girls just in case an event like this takes place. See the article on stunt groups for the names of your girls.

**If any of the above listed parents will not be present on a particular weekend please get the red folder to another parent spotter in your stunt group or give the folder to one of the coaches you will be with on that weekend.**

If you have any questions or comments please contact Coach Kelly.

"PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE"
megaphone yell
"As everyone knows, it is important to make it to practice and make it
there on time. Demerits are given for excessive tardiness to practice
even if they are excused. Only 3 excused absences or tardies are allowed.
After that 1 demerit is given, unless that girl has a doctors note.
The same applies to attendance. If we do not receive a phone call within
24 hours of the missed practice or game explaining the absence, that
absence is determined as an un-excused absence and that is 3 DEMERITS.
(See the demerit schedule for more details.)

HELP YOUR DAUGHTER BE A BETTER CHEERLEADER
cheer jump
The coaches do not perform the chants, cheers, or dances
with the girls at the games, so it is very important that everyone practice
at home too. If anyone ever needs extra practice on the material your fellow cheerleaders are always available to help. Just ask! Coach Kelly is also available for individual help if needed. Other things to help your daughter be a better cheerleader:

* Encourage them to play outside
* Have them practice jumping (higher and higher)
* Encourage them to practice cheering in front of a mirror
* Feed them nutritious food
* Have them drink plenty of water

RESPECT YOUR FELLOW CHEERLEADERS & COACHES!
cheerleader chicks
Our team always makes a pledge at the beginning of the season to show respect to our fellow cheerleaders and coaches. All the girls signed the pledge at Cheer Camp and the parents will have the opportunity to do the same when practice starts. Everyone is required to treat everyone the way they want to be treated... we do not allow bullying of any kind. All coaches are allowed to hand out demerits as they see fit, but we believe that everyone can and will be nice and treat others with respect just because it's the right thing to do. Verbal warnings are given and documented to show we are communicating expectations to the girls. For more details about demerits see the article on Demerit Schedule.

DEMERIT SCHEDULE
Updates, if any, have not been made for the '07 season, but here is the schedule from last season.

BYFA has approved the following as an appropriate demerit schedule
for all grades:
* Excessive lateness for practice (unexcused)       +   2 (see note)
* Late for game (unexcused)                         +   2 (see note)
* Absence from game (unexcused)                     +   3 (see note)
* Absence from practice (unexcused)                +   3 (see note)
* Profane language or obscene gesture               +   3 (see note)
* Unnecessary conversation with crowd or team       +   1 (see note)
* Leaving during game (unexcused)                   +   1 (see note)
* Unsportsmanlike manner or attitude                +   1 (see note)
* Out of uniform                                    +   1 (see note)
* Absence from practice or game (excused)          ++ (see note)
* Late for practice or game (excused)               ++ (see note)

A cheerleader is permitted no more than a total of 10 demerits.
Ten demerits will result in the cheerleader sitting out for one game,
but the cheerleader must attend that game and sit on the sidelines.

+ Excused absences are illness, death of a family member, or family
vacation until the start of school. Anything other than these constitutes
an unexcused absence.

++No demerits will be given for excused absences until the 3rd absence.
Then the cheerleader will receive 1 demerit for that absence and all
subsequent absences except in cases where a doctor's statement excuses the cheerleader from cheerleading.

!!!THIS DEMERIT SCHEDULE IS EFFECTIVE WHEN SCHOOL STARTS UNTIL THE LAST
COMPETITION DATE!!!
