Tryout Questions
Who tries out?
All ages try out within their age group and your age group is based on the 2008 - 2009 age definitions(You can find this on the Carolina Region web site Juniors FAQ page).
How are team tryouts handled?
Each girl will be tested on their volleyball skills, scrimmage play and total athletic ability in their age group. Girls will only be asked to play on an older team due to the needs of the older team or the fact that the individual plays at a much higher level than her age.
Team and Practice Questions
How long does the season last?
Try outs are early November and practices will start in early December. Most of our teams will start Tournaments the 2nd weekend of January and the season will continue until the middle of April. If a team plays regionals this will extend their season until the end of April. If a team makes Nationals they could play into June or July.
How often do I practice?
Regional teams will practice twice a week for 2 hours each practice. National teams will practice three times a week for 2 hours each practice. If a team has a tournament on the weekend they may not have all their practices the following week.
Where and when will practices be held?
Most practices will be held at the Biltmore Field House in Fletcher. Additional sites are Fosters Church, Rugby Middle School, and UNC Asheville.
How many players will be assigned to a team?
Maximum 10 players on each team.
Will I have the same coach the entire season?
Once a coach and assistant coach is assigned to your team they will be your coach for the season. We can't predict unforeseen Tournament or practice conflicts, but we hope to have a high commitment level from our coaching staff, parents and players.
Can players miss practices?
Practices will be mandatory. No Practice No Play. The only excuses for missing practices are illnesses, family emergency and school "event" obligations. Coaches must be informed before practice time if you will be absent. Remember, your practice times are set and you can arrange other things around practices. DEVELOP GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT.
Can I play other sports?
Yes! School sports are a priority and come first and are considered an excused absence. Please consider carefully how other sport activities will affect your ability to participate and commit to Biltmore Volleyball Academy. Remember there is no I in TEAM.
Tournament Questions
How are Travel Tournaments Handled?
Tournament sites vary. Most of our Carolina Region Tournaments are within 3-4 hours and we host the " Jr. Hi Neighbor Tournament" in Asheville. The younger age team (12s) will be involved in closer tournaments with Club South in Spartanburg. We also go to a few National Tournament Qualifiers in cities like Atlanta, Tampa, Baltimore. With over night Tournaments we have travel reps (parent volunteers)to make arrangements for rooms. The academy will help these travel reps to coordinate blocks of rooms for there teams. Players must stay with their parents or a team member's parents. Tournament entry fees are included in your dues during the regular season. If a coach decides to take a team later in the season to an additional tournament there could be an additional cost per player.
Which Tournaments do the teams attend and how often?
Beginning in January, we will attend tournaments approximately every other week-end( you will receive a tournament schedule). Tournaments are held on Saturdays depending on the distance you can elect to travel the same day or the night before.
Can a player miss a Tournament?
Only for illness, family emergency or School "event". If you must miss a Tournament always notify the coach at least two weeks before.
How is playing time handled at Tournaments?
No player is guaranteed playing time at tournaments!!! This is a coaches decision and if you have concerns, during the tournament is not the time to confront the coaches. Please refer to your handbook for the grievance policy.
Academy Fee Questions
What is the cost and what does the fee include?
The cost for the 2008-2009 season can range from 700.00 - 1300.00 depending on level of team and the number of players. Included in the fees are individual and team USVBA registration, tournament entry fees, coaches stipend, practice facility cost, equipment, coaches uniforms and administration costs. Each player will be responsible for their uniform cost, travel expenses, lodging and meals. For ease of payment, the cost will be payable in three installments due November 15, 2008, January 15, 2009, and February 15, 2009. Failure to pay these installments in a timely manner will keep the player from further participation in practices and tournaments.
Do you offer Scholarships?
Yes, the Academy does offer a limited amount of player scholarships based on NEED ONLY. You will have to submit a Biltmore Volleyball Scholarship Application. Your information will be reviewed by the Executive Board and is kept confidential. The Board will then make a decision on who gets a Scholarship to help defer some of the cost.
Eligibility Guidelines for Financial Scholarships:
- Granted to players based on financial need from previous year’s tax return.
- Not eligible if scholarship application is found to be falsified.
- No full financial scholarships allowed.
- Scholarships given to a player for only two years throughout her club career.
- Partial scholarships only given when monies are donated from private entities or budgeted for that season.
- Consider player’s prior commitment to club/team.
