Big Sky Conference - South Central Alberta HS Football: Welcome

2011 Team Locations: Canmore, Strathmore, Drumheller, Olds, Innisfail

2011 sees the league makeup changing once again.  Rundle and High River withdraw from the league and join the new Big Rock league with HTA and Foothills.  The initial BSC schedule was struck in Feb, with the Tier 4 teams playing a six game regular season and the Tier 3 team playing four regular season games.  The creation of the Big Rock league now produces 3 leagues within ASAA Region 2, thus creating the need for inter-league playoffs for the Region 2 Provincial Playoff Berths.

The Tiering Levels for 2011 Season:

Tier 4: Canmore, Olds, Innisfail, and Drumheller

                 Tier 3: Strathmore

Sept 1, 2011 Innisfail cancells their participation in the 2011 season

2010 sees the league makeup unchanged from last year.  The initial schedule was struck on Feb 18, with the Tier 3 and 4 teams playing a single game round robin which makes for a six game regular season.  HTA (Tier 2) has formally announced their withdrawal from the Big Sky League.  HTA has been accepted into the Rangeland League for 2010.

The Tiering Levels for 2010 Season:

Tier 4: Canmore, Rundle, Innisfail, and Drumheller

Tier 3: Highwood (High River), Olds, and Strathmore

2009 sees the league changing once again, Hanna and Oilfields (Black Diamond) deferred their entry into the league this year.  HTA's population growth will push them into Tier 2, Highwood returns to Tier 3, and Innisfail announced the return to Tier 4.  The schedule was finalized on June 14, with the Tier 3 and 4 teams playing a single game round robin which makes for a six game regular season.  HTA is taking on any challengers.

The Tiering Levels for 2009 Season:

Tier 4: Canmore, Rundle, Olds, Innisfail, and Drumheller

Tier 3: Highwood (High River) and Strathmore

Tier 2: Holy Trinity Academy (Okotoks)

2008 saw the league re-aligned once again. Returning to the North South Divisional Split as Canmore and Highwood dropped down to Tier 4, leaving Strathmore and HTA as the only Tier 3 teams. By the end of September, Innisfail found themselves also raising up a Tier to join Strathmore and HTA in Tier 3 for the playoffs. Rimbey never returned to the BSC, but joined into a 6 man league playing to their NW.

For the 2007 season, two new teams officially joined the league. The Rundle College Cobras who played an exhibition schedule in 2006 now compete in the Big Sky's Tier 4 Division. The Innisfail Cyclones who compete in the Central Alberta Football League have made the switch over also to compete in the Big Sky's Tier 4 Division. For the 2007 season the Rimbey Spartans decided to take a non-playing status in the like as they lost their coaching staff to other schools. The school will look to field a team for the 2008 season.

2006 the league remained status quo operating the Tier 3 & 4 Divisions.

2005 saw the league re-align into two Divisions split by Tier groupings. HTA, Highwood, Canmore, and Strathmore played in the Tier 3 Division, while Oilfields, Olds, Rimbey, Hanna, and Drumheller made up the Tier 4 Division.

In 2004, the league welcomed the Rimbey Spartans in to the league. Also it was decided that in 2004 the league would be split in to 2 division, North and South. The main reason for the change was to reduce team travel as the Big Sky League is quite large in its territory. The two divisions also help to break the teams up by their provincial tier. The Big Sky League has fielded some strong teams over the years. In the 2004 Football Alberta Final Season Rankings, 5 of the league's 9 teams were ranked in the top 10 for Tier 3 or 4.

For the 2003 season Highwood High School from High River and Oilfields Drillers from Black Diamond left the Rockyview league to join the Big Sky.

In 2000 the Bow Valley Wolverines from Canmore joined the league.

Pre 2000: In it's inception, the Big Sky League consisted of rural high school teams from around the Calgary area.  It included the following teams:
Drumheller Titans
Olds Spartans
J.C. Charyk Hawks (Hanna)
Strathmore Spartans
Holy Trinity Knights
St. Martin de Porres High School (Airdrie - no longer have a team)
Alix/Bashaw Mustangs (no longer have a team)
