Bethesda Dragons Welcome Dave Nolan as Head Coach

April 28, 2006 - The Bethesda Dragons welcome Dave Nolan as head coach and director of soccer for the Dragons. Dave comes with a tradition of excellence and achievement and the team is looking forward to an exciting future.

Background Information

Dave Nolan begins his second year as head coach with the Hoyas, but was the assistant for Georgetown for five years prior. In his first season the Hoyas had a best ever regular season BIG EAST finish by ending the season in fifth place. While an assistant, Nolan coordinated recruiting, developed goalkeepers, and worked closely with Coach Drake in all aspects of preparing the team. He brings a wide range of coaching experience to the Hilltop, having played and coached at various national and international levels.

Nolan came to GU in 1999 after spending the 1998 season on the Seton Hall women's soccer staff, serving as the goalkeeper coach. In addition, he was the Director of Coaching at the Emerald Soccer School in South Orange, N.J. Nolan spent the summer of 1999 as the assistant coach of the W-League Central Jersey Splash. Prior to Seton Hall, he was an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University during the 1997 fall season.

Before moving into the college ranks, he was hired in January 1997 as a director of the prestigious Soccer Plus Goalkeeping Academy, run by former US National Women's Team coach and current commissioner of the WUSA, Tony DiCicco, a position Nolan still holds. In addition to coaching at Georgetown, Nolan has helped to develop players for the U-16, U-17, U-19, and U-21 U.S. National teams. He is the coach for the DC U-17 team, Super Y, where he helped lead them to a national championship appearance in 2003.

Nolan is also the coach of the U-18 Bethesda Excel, a club soccer team who has made an unprecedented three consecutive National Championship appearances resulting Bethesda Excel being the two-time national runners-up. Bethesda Excel was the Region 1 Champions in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Additionally, the team has always been ranked in the top two between 2003 and 2005.

A member of the National Team Pool in Ireland at the Youth Level, Nolan came to the United States and played soccer at Seton Hall. A four-year starter, he led the Pirates to four-consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and two BIG EAST Conference championships. Selected to the 1987 BIG EAST Conference Tournament Team, Nolan was named the BIG EAST Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in 1991. Nolan was a New Jersey State Under-23 team selection in 1992, and a New Jersey Senior Side representative from 1993-1997.

He received a bachelor's degree in Finance in 1991, and later earned a master's degree in Business Administration in 1993, also from Seton Hall. Nolan holds an advanced national license from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and a United States Soccer Federation "A" license. In addition, he works with the U-15 Regional staff. Columbia, Md. - The Dragons were up very early on Saturday morning to play their first game of the 2007 Columbia Invitational Memorial Day tournament. Their first opponent was the formidable LDC United team from Eastern Pennsylvania. Both teams played a physical game and fought hard. The first goal came during the first half when a corner kick from Kaitlin was headed in by Jacquie. The United answered back with a goal in the second half. The Dragons came back with another goal, this time from Alex to Kathryn. The final score was Dragons 2-1.

The Dragons returned in the afternoon to temperatures soaring around 90 degrees, this time to face the Rhode Island Rays Sting. The teams battled for a goal throughout the first half, with neither side able to punch the ball through the defensive lines. The Dragons came back in the second half and finally scored when Rachel drove the ball high into the right corner of the goal from well outside the box.  A second goal was scored when Jen carried the ball up the side and sent a line drive across the front of the goal where Kaitlin slammed it into the net. The Dragons won the game with a final score of 2-0 and advanced to the semi-finals.

On Sunday, the Dragons slept later, returning to Columbia for an early afternoon game against the Loudoun Explosion from Virginia. The Dragons scored the first goal early in the game when Kathryn centered the ball in front of the goal. A scrum erupted and in the frenzy, Cami found the ball and knocked it in for the goal. The next goal came when Jacquie took a direct kick that was headed in by Alex. In the second half the Dragons scored again when a ball, sent from Elle to Kathryn, ricocheted off the left post and was kicked in by Alex.  The last goal came from Shay to Alex for the hat trick. Marlee's gravity defying saves in the goal and the strong defensive line kept the Explosion from scoring. The final score was 4-0, Dragons.

No sleeping in for the Dragons on Monday when they returned to play in the finals against the very talented Baltimore Soccer Club Bays.  The Dragons were fired up, scoring within the first minute. The team pressed forward resulting in a shot that was headed away and caught by Cami on the rebound and knocked into the net.  The team held on to their lead, returning in the second half to score two more goals.  Both goals were scored by Katie who hooked a beautiful ball into the upper corner of the goal and then headed in a corner kick from Shay. The final score was Dragons, 3-0.
