BELMONT SPORTS COMPLEX - TURF PROJECT
YOUR ACTION AND SUPPORT NEEDED

Dear BUSC & AYSO Members,

We need your attendance at the Belmont City Council Meeting scheduled for October 8th @ 7:30pm at the Belmont City Council Chambers located at One Twin Pines Lane, Belmont.

This City Council Meeting will directly impact Belmont/Redwood Shores kids involved in youth sports for many generations to come.

On the Agenda is an item to deliberate and select a preferred design alternative for the proposed synthetic turf project for the North Field at the Belmont Sports Complex. At this meeting, the City Council will select either Design Alternative A-2 or B-1, which will directly impact the type of sports activity that can use the North Field.

At the June 5, 2013 Belmont Parks & Recreation Commission meeting, the Commission deliberated and selected by an overwhelming majority (by a 7-1 vote) Design Alternative A-2 for the synthetic turf project on the North Field at the Belmont Sports Complex. The Commission and City Staff selected Design Alternative A-2 because (i) it provides the greatest flexibility to accommodate youth sport activities, (ii) serves the greatest number of Belmont residents, and (iii) results in the greatest reduction in maintenance and water costs and greatest benefit to the environment.

However, at a subsequent City Council Meeting two (2) non-playing, adult, baseball individuals took the stand and spoke out against the Parks & Recreation selection of Design Alternative A-2. These two (2) adults are in favor of Design Alternative B-1. Design Alternative B-1 includes a grass/dirt baseball infield and a synthetic turf outfield, which will entirely restrict the use of this portion of the field to an overwhelming vast majority of Belmont kids and only allow for a very small minority of Belmont residents – approximately fifteen (15) Babe Ruth baseball players – to use it.

Please note that the Parks & Recreation Commission’s and City Staff’s preferred Design Alternative A-2 will still allow for these +/-15 Belmont Babe Ruth baseball players to have a state-of-the-art baseball field just like the recently installed synthetic turf baseball specific fields (with synthetic turf infields and clay mounds) located at College of San Mateo, Canada College & Skyline College.
