2008 NEBRASKA STATE CHAMPIONS
2008 State Champions
2008 "Classic Cup" State Champions

Congratulations go out to the BLAST for becoming back-to-back State Champions!  The girls came out of the gates slowly by posting their poorest performance in recent memory and losing to the AZZ Excel 4-0.  Of course, missing Steffi, Stu, and Mandy for the game had alot to do with our poor performance.  The girls rebounded in game two to beat the PSC Blitz, 4-0, but lost Taylor in the process.  She took a hit from the Blitz Keeper which was followed immediately by a harder hit from the ground.  In a must-win game to start out Sunday's competition, the girls came out on top of the ELK Flash 2-0.  This victory set up a rematch with the AZZ Excel for the championship.  If our poor performance in game 1 did any good, it might have given the Excel the idea that the championship game was going to be easy for them ...  it wasn't!!!  Steffi opened up the scoring in the 2nd minute of the game with a long lofted shot.  The score remained the same until the 10th minute of the second half when the Excel pulled even.  They took the lead a few minutes later.  The score remained the same until midway though the second half  when Heather deposited a goal in the net.  We had multiple opportuniities to end the game in regulation, but this was the Excel and this was a State Championship game against them ... this wasn't going to end in regulation.  The first OT period provided opportunities, but no goals.  The second OT period was drawing to a close and we were making adjustments to the lineup to prepare for PK's when Steffi received a cross and made our preparations useless by netting a beautiful goal to seal the championship.  The girls played wonderfully this afternoon and should be proud of their accomplishment.  Stu did a stellar job at Center Midfielder replacing Taylor and Lex put in her usual outstanding performance in goal.  All of the girls stepped up and played their hearts out.  Well done!

Yorkfest Champions 2008
2008 Yorkfest Champions

The BLAST got their U-15 Tournaments off and running by bringing home gold medals from the U-16 Bracket of the 19th Annual Yorkfest / Rosemary Stahr Tournament.  The girls had lost the previous two championshp games at this tournament.  The BLAST opened with a 2-0 victory against the Gretna Wyvern Saturday morning on goals by Heather Penc and Taylor Silva.  They then followed that up with a 3-1 victory over the Lincoln Spirit Shoccerz on goals by Abigail Ubbelohde, Christa Manning, and another from Heather Penc.  By the end of Day 1 the girls knew that they would play in the Championship Game.  Game 3 allowed us to give Stu a rest to nurse injuries and to allowed us to get girls out of their normal positions.   It also allowed Taylor to get some valuable experience as Keeper.  If there's such a thing as a "good loss' this was it.  This gave the Toro team a false confidence as they went into the finals.  Steffi Babbe opened the scoring midway through the first half of the Championship Game and followed that up with a direct goal off a corner kick in the second half.  This was the first-ever direct corner kick goal in our 7 outdoor seasons.  Alejandra Hernandez closed out the scoring on a beautiful cross by Alexandra Pena.

BLAST -- FALL '08 SCHEDULE
Clicking on the headline above will take you to the NSL schedule/scores page.
DATE  TIME  FIELD  HOME AWAY   COMMENTS / SCORE
AUG 24TH (SUN) 1:00 PM BSC-2 BLAST  AZZ EXCEL T: 2-2 As expected, this was a tough game.  It was a game though, that the BLAST should have won.  Lack of communication on Defense and lack of finishing on Offense kept us from walking away with this victory.
SEP 7TH (SUN) 2:30 PM LSP-2 LSP SHOCCERZ  BLAST W: 2-1 We should have scored a few more and allowed one less.  After last weekend of playing high speed games, this game felt as if the girls were running in mud.  They played a solid dominating game and only gave up a few scoring opportunities. Christa Manning scored both goals ... one coming off a beautiful header from a Steffi Babbe corner kick.
SEP 14TH (SUN) 3:00 PM TQP-8 GLA 93/94 WHITE  BLAST

W:  4-0 This was a wonderfully played game on everyone's part.  The girls really put a great game together!!  Heather started the scoring by making certain that Steffi's shot that had already made it past the keeper ... found it's way into the goal.  Stu then placed an awesome shot in the top-right corner of the goal to close out the first-half scoring.  Poca started our 2nd half scoring late in the game.  That was followed quickly by a another header goal off a corner kick.  This time Lex put the shot in off a cross from Poca.  We played a little short today as Jenn did not play due to an ingrown nail ... Poca (and Mandy) did a great job at Sweep.  Micky also went down with a knee injury late in the 1st half.  We all have our fingers crossed that it's nothing serious!  We welcomed Abigail back from her knee injury.  It's still discolored and bruised, but she toughed it out!

SEP 21ST (SUN) 1:00 PM TQP-8 BLAST TST MIRACLE

W: 3-1 This victory guaranteed the Blast a share of the Division title with a 3-0-1 record.  Steffi scored one goal and Poca netted two in the first half to put us out to a dominating lead.  We had multiple other opportunities that we weren't able to capitalize on and could have won 6/7-1 if a few bounces had gone our way.

SEP 28TH (SUN) 1:00 PM BSC-2 BLAST CBF15G

T:2-2 This was a roughly played game against a U15 Premier League team and the girls did a good job in coming through with a tie.  We left a couple goals on the field and with a couple of breaks we could have won this game.  Alicia Scarpello scored her her first BLAST goal and Tay rounded out the scoring.  This result will help us in our quest to move to Premier next Fall.

OCT 1ST (WED) 5:45 PM TQP-3 TOR FUERZA BLAST

T: 2-2 This was a mid-week game and we had several girls tied up with other commitments ... and only had 2 subs.  The girls built a 2-0 lead at halftime and I praised their efforts.  Big mistake.  They went out in the second half and let down a little bit and allowed the Fuerza to come back to tie the game

OCT 5TH (SUN) 3:00 PM BSC-2 BLAST ELK FLASH

W: 7-1 This was a fantastic game for all of the girls.  We welcomed Mickey back from her knee injury too.  We went out and controlled play during the first half and built a commanding lead.  This allowed us to move positions and let our defenders stretch their legs a bit on offense and score a few goals.

OCT 12TH (SUN) 3:00 PM  PAP-4 PAP BLITZ BLAST

W:  2-0 This was an extremely windy game that disrupted things on both ends of the field.  The girls said going against the wind in the first half was like running up a hill the entire time.  We dominted play, but finishing took a hit from the wind.  Heather got the scoring started in the first half off a cross from Steffi and Lex hit a beautiful shot in the second half that scorched its way the the Keepers hands.  Lex, Tay, and Stu combined to hold Papillion scoreless ... actually, solid play from the entire defense combined to hold Papillion scoreless.  This was a nice way to close out the regular season ... with a 5-0-3 record.  Well done!

SPRING 2008 SCHEDULE AND SCORES
Clicking the headline will take you to the Nebraska Soccer League U-14G Divison 1 schedule and scores.
DATE TIME FIELD   HOME AWAY  COMMENTS / SCORE
SATURDAY,

MARCH  29

1PM ABBOTT-CF (LINCOLN) NER SWOOSH 93/94 BSC BLAST T: 0-0, This game was played much tighter than we bargained for.  We played well with the exception of a couple of "finishes" and could have won 2 or 3 - 0.  The Swoosh is a MUCH better team that we played last season.  Having a UNL Asst. Women's coach as their head coach has definitely payed off for them!
SATURDAY,

APRIL 5

3PM BSC-7 BSC BLAST CBF 94 GIRLS

L:  1-0 This game was as tough as we expected.

SUNDAY ,

APRIL 13

1PM YORK-D GIS WAVE BSC BLAST

W:  4-0.  We finally got things going against the Wave.  Christa put in a pretty goal in the first half off passes from Steffi and Abi.  Abi then scored 2 second half goals and Taylor added a 4th goal for the game.

SUNDAY,

APRIL 13

5PM YORK-C BSC BLAST NP BLUE LIGHTNING W:  1-0.  This game was close due to issues with "finishing" on our part.  We could have easily scored 2-3 more goals if our finishes were placed well.  As it was, Lindsey scored 30 minutes into the second half to close out an overall good day for us!
SATURDAY,

APRIL 19

1PM  BSC-7 BSC BLAST  LSC WARRIORS

W: 11-0.  This was definitely a "get well" game.  The girls played an excellent match and the competition allowed them to work on many training items under game conditions.

SATURDAY,

APRIL 26

1PM TQP-3 AZZ EXCEL BSC BLAST

T:  2-2.  This game was as tough as we expected and the Excel didn't let us down with their physical play.  Indecision and unusually weak defensive play put us in an early 2-0 hole, but the girls kept their heads up and sctratched out a tough 2-2 tie.  Congrats go out to Lindsey who made some spectacular saves in the second half to keep the Excel in check while her teammates were working on the comeback.  We also welcomed Emily back from her high school team and she immediately made us a better team.  All the girls worked hard and showed the focus (in the second half) that our recent moves were aimed at.

SUNDAY,

MAY 4

1PM BSC-7 BSC BLAST LSC SHOCCERZ

T:  1-1.  This was a game filled with missed opportunities and is another tie that should have been a victory.

SATURDAY,

MAY 10

5PM TQP-3 BSC BLAST TSR MIRACLE

DIV 2 TEAM LAST SEASON.  DEFEATED THEM 2-0 IN SPRING 07.

The NSL contacted me to let me know that it appears this game won't be made up ... a rather large let down on their part.

TUESDAY,

MAY 20

5:30PM TQP-3 GLA 93/94 WHITE BSC BLAST W:  3-1.  This was a well played game and a nice way to finish the season.  Brea scored on a rebound off a shot taken by Shannon.  Brea then scored a second goal on a nice through ball from Ricki.  Kara depositied the third goal off a fanastic cross by Lindsey.  Alexis and Lindsey combined to make some spectaular saves and help presserve the victory.

Lincoln Cup Finalists
Lincoln Cup
Lincoln Cup Finalists

Congratulations go out to the Blast for playing their way into the Championship Game of the Lincoln Cup.  The girls opened the tournament up with a fine performance against the LCS Blazers and came out with a 5 - 0 victory Friday night.  The Saturday games put the girls up against teams that they had never faced before.  The first game saw the Blast battle their way to a 3 - 0 victory against the Schuyler Titans.  The second game of a hot afternoon saw the girls go head to head with the Norfolk Express.  A hard fought game ended in a 0 - 0 tie.  The girls finished the round-robin portion of the tourney with 24 points and were seeded #1 in the Championship Game.  The game pitted us against the Norfolk Express once again ... and once again the game ended in a 0 - 0 tie.  Two overtimes could not produce a winner so the game was decided on Penalty Kicks.  We won the State Championship last fall on PK's, but unfortunately found out what losing on PK's feels like as we lost 2 -1.  So ends another year of Blast soccer.  Coach Phill and I are incredibly proud of the girls and look forward to continue building in the fall.

2007 Nebraska State Champions
2007 State Champions-Will
2007 U-14 "Classic" State Champions

Congratulations to the Blast for showing their true character by coming home with the 2007 Toyota Classic Cup gold medals. The Blast got things going in game 1 of the round-robin with a 4-1 victory over the Azzurri Excel. The Blast closed out day 1 of the tourney with a 4-0 victory over the Lincoln Spirit Netbusters. Day two bought about a change in weather (50 degrees and 30 mph winds), but not a change in Blast fortunes. Day two opened up with a 2-0 victory over the Papillion Blitz. With this victory, the Blast closed out the round-robin with a 3-0 record and set them up for a rematch with the Azzurri Excel. The Excel changed their tact a bit in the championship game as they played more tactically and a bit less physically. Emily Engstrom opened up the scoring with a phenomenal shot from well outside the 18 to put the Blast up 1-0. The Excel responded with two quick goals and held the lead until only 1 minute remained in the game. A goal in the last minute of regulation by Christa Manning brought the Blast back to a 2-2 tie. Two ten-minute overtimes provided multiple opportunities for the Blast as they dominated play, but no goals. The girls showed what a remarkable group they are by going into their first-ever shootout final and emerging with a 3-2 victory in the 5-round format. PK's were scored by Taylor Silva, Paige Stewart, and Ricki Duffy. Lindsey Fiegenschuh made a fantastic save to preserve the 3-2 victory .
