Preparations for the 10-11 Boys Tournament Beginning July 12 at Beck Fields There is plenty to do to get our facility ready for the upcoming tournament. If you can spare any time at all, please come by the fields any weeknight beginning July 7 to help us fix, paint, weed, and generally make the place presentable. Here's what needs to be done for the most part, so bring your tools and have at it!:
Field 1
- Weave fence wire through bottom of the fence along the foul lines to straighten the bottom curl
- Re-hand dugout gate on 1st base side
- Finish roof on 3rd base dugout
- Edge grass along foul lines and warning track to straighten edge - use a string to ensure a straight line
- Reset pitchers rubber at right height (6" above plate), distance (46 feet from back point of plate to front edge of rubber), and orientation (straight to the plate)
- Weed warning track
- Lower fence posts along LF and RF lines to bring fencing closer to the ground
- Add athletic meal (from the pile by field 7) to the grass to dirt transitions
Field 2
- Remove the rocks and old drag from the outside of the LF fence near the corner gate
- Cut off old fenct post on the outfield end of the 3rd base dugout
- Build mound and set rubber
Both Field 1 and Field 2
- Put two sets of bleachers on each side of the field - maybe get five or six sets of trailer landing gear and temporarily attach
- Hang mesh along backstop except for a space for the scorer's table by 3rd base dugout
- Measure base distances and ensure alignment with foul poles - move base pegs as necessary
- Reseat base pegs to 1/2 inch below surface to ensure bases sit flat on the ground
- Trim grass along the fences with weed whacker
- Re-attach any loose fencing
- Pick weeds along backstop and dugout fences
- Edge OF grass along the IF skin
- Clean bases to be used for the tournament - sweep the slag out of the magnetic base to ensure a good fit
- Level out infield, especially around bases and at home plate
General
- Add slag to the water holes along walkway in front of field #1
- Paint dugouts, bleachers, and sky box
- Move garbage cans around fields 1-6 (3, 4, 5, and 6 to be used as warm-up fields)
- Cut up scrap wood by dumpster and throw it in the dumpster
- Fix flagpole attaching wire on flagpole behind field 1
- Sue's concession stand list
- Shed cleanout
- Trash pickup
- Concession stand cleaning (especially the "handicap bathroom")
- Hazardous conditions inspection and correction on all fields/areas (like the junk that sticks out of the pile between fields 1, 2, 5, and 6)
Fall B.A.L.L. Did you miss the registrations held the week of 23-June? If so, you have one last chance to register your son or daughter for the late summer/early fall season. Registrations will be accepted on Monday, June 30, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday, July 1 and 2. Those may be your last chances to get in on the fall fun, so please try to get to Beck Fields between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on those nights to get registered. Anyone interested in being a coach should submit their name during registration. Our start date for the second season is tentatively mid-August, and the season will run through September. Raffle Results Congratulations to Scott Morgan, Alex Boyar, and Ty Patton who were the winners of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in our 2008 fundraiser raffle.
Please Be Vigilant! Recently, several people at the Beck Field complex have witnessed some suspicious persons loitering in the vicinity of our fields. Parents need to know the whereabouts of not only the children on the baseball diamond but also any other kids who attend games with them. The safety and well-being of all B.A.L.L. players, parents, coaches, and other guests is of the utmost importance to the B.A.L.L. Board of Directors. We have worked with the Van Buren Police Department to do our best to ensure a safe environment, but your vigilance in watching for and reporting suspicious persons will help us preserve the open and friendly atmosphere where people enjoy watching games and socializing with others. NO PETS! B.A.L.L. has had a long-standing policy of "no pets" at our Beck Fields. This policy has been stated at Meet the Manager meetings at the beginning of each season. More and more pets have been seen at the fields in recent times in violation of this policy. Please respect this policy and refrain from bringing your pet to the fields. Thanks in advance for your compliance with this policy. Coaches! As a reminder, after your game or practice session, please care for our fields by raking out the areas around the batters box, pitching rubber and base paths. All bases must be returned to an equipment shed as follows: Fields 1, 2, 3, 4, and Thorne Field - Shed on Field 1 Field 5 - Shed on Field 5 Field 6 - Shed on Field 6 Fields 7 and 8 - Shed on Field 7 Both teams are responsible for field maintenance after a game! Coaches are directly responsible for ensuring their team assists with this maintenance - either by personally contributing or by assigning a parent volunteer (counts as volunteer credit!).
