Steve Smith – Head Coach



Steve Smith was named head coach of the Baylor baseball program on July 29, 1994, becoming the 18th head coach in Baylor history. The 2008 season will mark Coach Smith's thirteenth season as the skipper of the Baylor Bears.   Smith was named the 2000 Big 12 Coach of the Year after guiding the Bears to their first ourtight conference title in 77 years. In January 2001, Smith was named by Baseball America as one of ten rising stars on all levels of baseball. He was the only person associated with college baseball on the list.
An accomplished pitching coach, Smith has tutored six pitchers in the last 13 years who were selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. He has also had at least one pitcher named to the all-conference first team in 11 of the last 13 years. In 1999, under Smith's tutelage, right-hander/designated hitter Jason Jennings won the Golden Spikes Award as the best player in college baseball and was the 16th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies.
In Smith's 12 years as head coach, the Bears have produced 11 All-Americans, including two-time honoree Jason Jennings, six CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, one CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, 30 first-team all-conference performers, six freshman All-Americans and three conference players of the year. Baylor has also placed 41 players on the Big 12 Academic all-Conference first team in the past eight seasons.





Steve Johnigan – Assistant coach/Camp director



Steve Johnigan serves as camp director and is currently entering his thirteenth year at Baylor after serving as an assistant at Mississippi State and Texas A&M and a successful playing career in College Station and in the professional ranks with the Cleveland Indians. Johnigan coaches third base and coordinates the Bears'offense and baserunning, coaches the infiedlers and catchers, and assists with hitting instruction. Johnigan was selected to the SWC All-Tournament team at Texas A&M in 1985




Mitch Thompson – Assistant Coach



Mitch Thompson is beginning his forteenth year at Baylor following coaching stints at Radford University, Mississippi State, and Auburn University. Thompson has coached 12 teams that advanced to NCAA Tournament play and has helped lead three different schools to the College World Series (1990 - MSU, 1994 - Auburn, 2005 - Baylor). Thompson, who serves as primary hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator for the Bears, brings an abundance of camp and clinic experience to Baylor. Thompson recently was named the 2006 recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association/Baseball America National Assistant coach of the Year. A native of Goodland, Kansas, Thompson played collegiately at Fort Hays State University.





Chris Clemons – Assistant Coach



Chris Clemons is in his second season as volunteer assistant coach at Baylor. Clemons joined the Baylor program after spending three seasons at McLennan Community College in Waco, where he worked with the Highlanders' pitchers and catchers and served as recruiting coordinator. A 1994 All-American and All-Southwest conference selection at Texas A&M, Clemons pitched for the Aggies' 1993 College World Series team. Clemons was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 33rd overall selection in the first round of the 1994 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He spent seven seasons in professional baseball with the White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins organizations. Clemons reached the Majors in 1997, when he appeared in five games with two starts for the White Sox.
