What is Lacrosse?T
The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Anyone can play lacrosse--the big or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse. An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men's and women's lacrosse. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball. Men's and women's lacrosse remain derivations of the same game today, but are played under different rules. Women's rules limit stick contact, prohibit body contact and, therefore, require little protective equipment. Men's lacrosse rules allow some degree of stick and body contact, although violence is neither condoned nor allowed.
- What’s in the future?Lacrosse is known as the fastest game on two feet. It is also the fastest growing sport in the US. The future is coming…Getting involved as a youth will provide future opportunities for those who excel.
- Boys:
- In 2009 the Battle Creek area will have two HS boy’s teams. Both Lakeview and Pennfield High Schools will offer school affiliated boys club team while Wattles Park Men’s club will continue as the major sponsor of the Battle Creek Lacrosse Team and welcome all area participants. In the next 3 to 5 years more high school affiliated programs are expected to spring up. When this happens Wattles Park Men’s Club will continue to provide youth lacrosse as a stepping stone into high school level play.
- Girls:
- In 2009 the womens' program will play a varsity schedule after competing the last two seasons as a JV team. It's hoped that enough middle school players will come out this summer for the clinic and 7x7 play that a middle school girl's team can take the field. The development of a feeder system into the successful high school team is a priority for 2010.
- Battle Creek Lacrosse 2009 teams: High school boys, High school girls, 5/6th grade boys and 7/8th grade boys.
