Babylon Little League
2012 Baseball for players 13U and older
Teams and Winter Workouts
Parents and Players: We want to make sure you’re aware of the Babylon Big LeagueBaseball Programs. We found that many of our players and families were unaware that
there are opportunities to keep playing in the Babylon Little League organization after the
12 year old Major division. Our ultimate goal for the league is to offer the ability foreach player to continue to play
more baseball and improve their skills whether they are on a school team or not. So no matter what your ability, if you bring a positive attitude
and put in the effort, you’ll be better at the end of our programs.
Overview of the program
Like many of our neighboring Villages, a few years ago the Babylon School District
reduced the number of school baseball teams. There is now only a single team for the
Junior High (7th and 8th grade combined) and no Freshman (JV9) Baseball team.
Babylon Little League’s Big League program will provide the opportunity for boys in
our Village to keep playing whether or not they play on a school team.
There are Big League teams for the 13 through 18 age groups. For baseball in the Big
League program there are three divisions of Little League International, the parent
organization of Babylon Little League. The three specific divisions are:
• The Junior Division for 13 and 14 year olds
• The Senior Division for the 14, 15 & 16 year olds
• The Big League Division for 16, 17 &18 year olds.
Last year (2011) Babylon fielded one team each at the JR & SR levels in the spring and a
single Junior team in the summer. The spring season is an informal season that typically
has games scheduled on Saturday afternoons and Sunday’s because many of the players
(on most of the teams in the league) are also playing for the school and we don’t want to
conflict with the school team schedule or the players commitment to the school team.
The JR/SR/Big League regular season starts in June after the school season is complete
and they play a 22 game schedule both during the week at night and on weekends which
is more competitive and includes playoffs and a championship game ending up in early
August.
We hope to field teams at those levels again this year in the spring and summer. The
teams are true “travel” teams playing opponents across the entire District 34 footprint
from Huntington Tri- Village to West Islip and even in Seaford to the west.
The deadline to sign up for these teams is March 15th. They typically carry a roster of
between 14-15 players, so in the situation where more than 15 boys are interested and
sign up on or before the deadline the League will hold a tryout in early April. Anyone
who signs up after March 15th will be placed on a waiting list. Also there is a team roster
minimum of 12 players to form a team. In the past when we have not had enough players
for one team, or too many players for one team but not enough for a second team, we
have been able to place these players on teams from other villages in the District 34
membership. We should be able to do the same this year if necessary.
If we have enough players for a second team, we would then need additional coaching
volunteers to manage the team. If you are inclined to help out coaching, please contact
Nick Giampietro at jrsrbigleague@nickgiampietro.com .
Winter Workouts
At the 13 year and older divisions, as with the younger teams, there are multiple levels of
competition (Gold/Silver/Bronze). Our League is not only seeking to maintain
participation at the older levels but to offer greater opportunities for players to play
against higher levels of competition. To prepare the teams for the competition, the
League is offering specialized winter workout training sessions. Working out over the
winter will also give the aspiring Junior High and High School players an additional
opportunity to prepare for the spring school season.
Our winter workout sessions are currently scheduled for Saturday afternoons/evenings in
the Babylon High School Gym for the 13 and older players. Our training program was
developed and will be held with the help of the Babylon High School Varsity baseball
coaching staff (Anthony Sparacio and Victor Manzella), some of the BHS Varsity team
members as well as other professional coaching resources.
