The Voice of Locust South
That voice you have heard most every Saturday is Steve Martino. Steve is also coach of the Giants of the major leagues. Steve volunteered his time on Saturdays and for the championship games this past week. He has taken the announcing to another level, adding sound effects, music, sponsor mentions, plugs for "Sean's Sugar Shack Snack Stand" and of course his singing of Take Me out to the Ballgame in the middle of the 4th inning. A few weeks ago, Steve had knee surgery on a Monday, yet was still in the announcers booth the next Saturday. We all thank you, Steve for your time and great announcing!!!

A Letter From the President
Just to remind all these are our FAIR PLAY RULES at posted on our Website
These guidelines are intended to serve as minimum standards for ensuring that all players get an equitable share of playing time. Coaches are required to meet these guidelines and strongly encouraged to exceed them to ensure balance in participation among players regardless of skill level. Coaches, especially at the lower skill levels, also need to ensure that players do not play positions where they lack the skills and experience to protect themselves or other players. Coaches are required to supply league director with a copy of team’s field positions, batting order and number of pitches thrown by each pitcher after each game (this requirement is mandated by Little League Baseball). Coaches are also required to sign a document stating their agreement to abide by the fair play rules.
Field Rule
Each player must play at least one inning and preferably two innings, in an infield position during a game. One inning constitutes three consecutive outs. Infield can be any of the following positions: catcher, pitcher, first base, second base, third base or shortstop. Regardless of the amount of innings played during the game this rule must be adhered to. Also, it is recommended that all players play the position of outfielder.
Bench Rule
In some situations, one or two players may have to sit for 2 innings in a game due to the number of players on the team. Consequently, all players on a team must sit for one inning before any player is asked to sit for a second inning during the game. One inning constitutes three consecutive outs. The starting pitcher is the ONLY player exempt from this rule. BUT when the starting pitcher is removed from the game he/she becomes subject to this rule. Also, if a player shows up after the first inning is completed that player may be exempt from this rule. If a player is hurt during the game that player is exempt from this rule. This rule must be adhered to if 10 or more players begin the game. Also, it is recommended that coaches rotate the starting fielding positions and not have the same players on the bench at the start of each game.
Batting Order
Each player must bat in one of the top four spots in the batting order in at least three games.
I also want to clear up and reiterate a couple of issues in regards to Fairplay rules
1 - ALL children at ALL levels are to play at least (1) inning of every game (INCLUDING THE PLAYOFFS) in the infield. The only time this should not occur is if THERE is a severe safety issue. If it is a safety issue then the coach should have a discussion with the parents ahead of time and let them know and then before a game they should let the other coach know. At this point of the season this discussion should have already occured. This should not be used as a reason to stop playing a child in the infield who has played there all season long.
2 - While it is not required to have each child play an inning in the outfield. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that each and every boy and girl play the outfield during the season, multiple times is even better. Just because a child is your "starting" shortstop it does not mean that is where they are going to play their entire career, especially when they get to junior high and high school. Remember this is Little League and we are trying to coach and teach these boys and girls to be the best players that they can be not the best players at a certain position. Having your supposed "best athletes" try another position other than 1st, SS, Pitcher and Catcher can only help them be better ball players in the future
3 - As the season winds down if each child has not yet had the chance to bat at the beginning of the order, please make sure they get the opportunity. Remember as noted above each child MUST bat in the top of the order in at least (3) games. If they have done so as of yet you still have time to meet this goal.
Remember all Minors and Majors teams make the playoffs, while all coaches should be coaching to win, winning should not come before any and all children no matter what their skill level may be.
At the farms level it is encouraged that coaches go beyond the prescribed fair play rules. This is an instructional-level division and all players should be given an equal chance to play all the positions on the field that do not pose a safety issue.
Also if you need to make up any days due to bad weather they must be made up before the last game of the regular season for the Minors and Majors levels. Farms Level and Tee Ball Level games can be made up after the last scheduled games as there are no playoffs. We highly encourage making up all games. (Please See Your Director)
Also as the season winds down I wanted to thank each and every one of you for taking the time out of your schedules to Manage, Coach, Assist, prepare and maintain our fields for all of our teams and players. I hope that the experience you have had is a rewarding one. I would also like you to take a look at the experience ALL of your players have had. If at the end of the year you can say the following, then you have done a great job coaching, mentoring and improving each child's Little League experience.
* Each child has shown improvement
* Each child had the opportunity to play multiple positions and bat in multiple spots in the order
* Each child, no matter how small it may be, had the chance to shine or made to feel that they made a positive contribution to his or her team
* Each child has the desire to come back and play Softball or Baseball next year.
Thank you again for all of your hard work and dedication and I hope to see all of you back on the fields next year.

Babylon Majors Softball out to a fast start
The Babylon Major League softball team "The Rock Hounds" coached by Rob Freyer, Mike Morrow amd Mike Sasuk are currently 3-0 and in 1st place in District 34 play. They have a combination of great pitching lead by Marisol Rivas with a 2-0 record and Alyssa Sasak going 1-0. Both have pitched brilliantly. They also have two top catchers in Jackie "Jackrabbit" Keane and Kathrine "Cat" Kelly. Their hitting is lead by Emily Freyer, Cali Walsberg, Melanie Candelora and Kira King. The top notch defense of Emily Reilly, Brittney Watson, Marrissa Allen and Breannna Morrow has been key to all 3 wins. Morrow, Sasak and Keane are a threat to steal anytime they are on base. Emily Freyer has the lone home run of the year after hitting one to the fence at Town Hall Field in Lindenhurst. The Rockhounds along with Babylon's other major softball team "The Mudcats" coached by Kevin Going and Rich Finelli have also been singled out for their sportsmanship. We can all be proud of these girls.

Important Information Regarding Field Maintenance
To all coaches and parents
As you know this past fall we regradeed, resodded and realigned both Locust Ave Fields. Our plan for this fall is to give the Ralph Avenue fields a makeover as well. The fields are now in pristine condition and it is our goal to keep them in this condition. In order to do this a few things must happen.
1 - Daily Maintenance: Fields must be raked properly at the end of each day after games are completed. Greg Sharp, who upgraded our fields, has been showing Board Members, Coaches and Volunteers the correct way to rake the fields. If you have not yet had the time to spend with Greg, please try and get together with him or another coach who has worked with Greg already. He will be at the Fields every Saturday morning at 7AM. Believe it or not there is a right and wrong way to rake the field and we need to make sure that we follow the correct steps and procedures in doing so.
2 - Weekly repairs and Maintenance: Saturday Mornings is our (1) chance in the week to really prep and do any miscellaneous repairs to the fields. We are looking for Volunteers to come down to the fields at 7am to work on all three fields for an hour to and hour and a half to do this work. We would like to get set groups of volunteers, as well as fill ins, for each field, hopefully we can get a minimum of 6 up to 10 volunteers per field. With this many it would not be a problem if we were missing people or were shorthanded one week. We would like to see Majors and Minors Coaches volunteer for South, Minors and Farms volunteer for North and Farms and T-Ball volunteer at Ralph.
3 - Tarps, as you know last year we purchased tarps for both Locust South and North. In case of heavy rain we are looking to have a list of people that we could contact to number 1 get the tarps on the field at night, (this can be done with as little as 4 people) and then have them removed before a game, (this takes a few more people but the hope here is that some of the parents for the game being played could come down to help out.) By doing this we can save the fields from taking too much of a beating. I hope to have new tarps for Ralph this year as well. If you can get us your email address and a contact number that would be great.
So as you can see we are looking for volunteers to help with the fields, we are reaching out to the coaches and in turn would like to see them reach out to all of the parents. We know that not everyone can commit the time to be a board member, manager or coach but if we can get other parents to help us out for an hour or so a week we can make sure that our fields stay in the condition they are in today. Please contact myself or the website to sign up and get on the list. Let us know where you think you can be of help to the Babylon Little League. The more we can do as volunteers and parents the better the experience all of the children will have
Thank you

A Message from President Kevin Going
To all Families:
To be eligible to play in the Babylon Little League your child must either be a Resident of the Village of Babylon or must live in the Boundaries of the Babylon School District. If you reside outside of the Village of Babylon and are registered in the West Babylon School District you are not permitted to play in the Babylon Little League. This is against our Williamsport Charter Agreement. If you have registered with us in error please contact us so that we can refund your registration fee.
Also if you live in Babylon Village but are in the West Babylon School District boundaries you are allowed to play in our spring season but your child will not be allowed to represent the Babylon Little League in either the Williamsport Summer Tournament or the District 34 Tournament. This is dictated by Williamsport Little League. So if you and/or your child have the desire or are interested in playing summer ball, then you should cancel your registration in the Babylon Little League and then register in the West Babylon Little League
If you have any questions please contact us through our Website

Little League at the Junior, Senior and Big League Levels
Hello to all Junior, Senior and Big League Baseball and Softball Families
The Babylon Little League would like to remind everyone that Little League is just not for Grade School children. Some people believe that the Little League baseball experience ends after 12 years of age. This is far from the truth. Little League has programs for boys and girls up to 18 years of age. After the Major League Division, Little League offers programs at the Junior, Senior and Big League Levels. These divisions play on full size fields. It is a great opportunity for boys and girls who would like to continue their Little League experience and to improve their skill levels as they play at the Junior and Senior High School levels.
In the past Babylon has had teams playing at all of these levels and we have been very successful. We would like to continue offering these successful programs to any and all boys and girls from the ages of 13 – 18 years of age. We are also looking for Managers and coaches for all of these teams, as well. We are looking to get commitments from the players by March 1st on whether or not they want to play. We would also like to know by the beginning of January who would be interested in being apart of the coaching staff for each of these teams
.
These programs typically only have one team at each age level, so unfortunately we will be accepting boys and girls on a first come first serve basis. If we are fortunate to get enough participants to make two teams it will then be necessary to have a second set of coaches. In the past the registration for these teams has dragged on late into the spring and has caused problems in actually putting teams together and setting up schedules with District 34 (This is our local Governing Little League).
District 34 and Williamsport have worked very hard over the last few years in improving the Little League experience at these age levels. They plan to offer a tournament schedule for these ages this year as well as improving the way the league operates. One of the bigger changes they have made is the age of play for each division in Baseball. This year the baseball divisions are broken down as follows
Juniors – 13 and 14 year old boys
Seniors – 14, 15 and 16 year old boys
Big League – 16, 17 and 18 year old boys
As you can see the 14 and 16 year old boys are swing years. They have done this with the hopes that the level of play improves and gives the boys of various abilities to play at the level that is best suited for them.
The girls are broken down as follows
Juniors – 13 and 14 years of age
Seniors – 15 and 16 years of age
Big League – 17 and over
If your son or daughter is interested in playing in the 2009 season and or you would be interested in being apart of the coaching staff for any of these teams, please email us at babylon.little.league@gmail.com or you can call any of the following board members to discuss

Tips on Establishing a Coach-Parent Partnership
Tips on Establishing a Coach-Parent Partnership
By David Jacobson, Positive Coaching Alliance
Little League Double-Goal Coaches®, who strive to win on the scoreboard while teaching life lessons, need cooperation from players’ parents to create a positive, character-building environment. Just as coaches have the “Second Goal” of teaching life lessons through sports, we encourage “Second Goal” parenting, where parents focus on helping their children take life lessons from baseball and softball.
The following tips, directed at parents, are excerpted from the new book Positive Sports Parenting: How “Second-Goal” Parents Raise Winners in Life Through Sports by Positive Coaching Alliance Founder Jim Thompson.
Recognize the commitment the coach has made: For whatever reason, you have chosen not to help coach the team. The coach has made a commitment that involves many hours of preparation beyond the hours spent at practices and games. He has earned the right to make decisions (including playing time) with his commitment. Recognize his commitment and the fact that in most cases he is doing so without pay. Try to remember this if something goes awry during the season.
Make early, positive contact with the coach: As soon as you know who your child’s coach is going to be, contact him/her to introduce yourself. To the extent that you can do so, ask if there is any way you can help. By getting to know the coach early and establishing a positive relationship, it will be much easier to talk with him/her later if a problem arises.
Let the coach coach: You are not one of the coaches, so avoid giving your child instructions during the game. It can be confusing for a child to hear someone other than the coach giving instructions during a game. And remember, the best way you can help your child is to be a “Second-Goal Parent,” so focus on helping your child learn life lessons and let the coach coach.

A Letter from the President
Play Ball! Welcome to the 2009 Babylon Little League Season. Even though winter is just setting in and it will be more than three months before your boys and girls take the field again, the Babylon Little League Board of Directors has already been working hard to make 2009 another fun and exciting season. We have replaced the sod on both infields at the Locust Avenue Fields, as well as aerated and seeded both outfields. Field improvements are also scheduled for Ralph Ave. in the spring. Our biggest modernization effort of the past few years, the construction of a new Snack Stand, is expected to be completed before the end of 2008. We will begin our registration for the 2009 season on Saturday, December 6th at Village Hall, from 9 AM to 12 noon. Parents who register at the December session can take advantage of savings on their registration fees. We will offer follow-up registration sessions on Wednesday, January 14th and Saturday, January 24th. Please visit our Website for more information and news. Despite the improvements we’ve made in 2008, registration fees for 2009, which are listed on the Web site, will be the same price as in previous years. As always, the board of directors is constantly trying to improve your child’s Little League experience. With an enrollment of over 500 boys and girls, we cannot do this alone. It takes parents and family getting involved to truly make each season a fond memory for each boy and girl. Each year we need well over 120 volunteers to help manage, coach, maintain the fields and make sure that Little League is a fun, safe and enjoyable experience for all children. Both you and your children will benefit from any assistance you can offer or time you can spend at the fields. When registering your children, please see one of the board members to see how you can be a part of your child’s Little League experience. Important dates to put on your calendar Clinics: Feb 28th , March 7, 14 & 21Draft night: March 4thOpening Day: April 18th As always, please feel free to visit our Website for all of the latest news and updates. A Letter From the President
To all Babylon Village Residents
The summer has ended and the children are back in school. I am sure they are all hitting the books hard and doing their best. The Babylon Little League Fall program is in full swing, providing baseball and softball players with an extended season of fun and competition on the diamond.
As we get ready to wrap up our 2008 season, we're already working hard on 2009, looking to continue improving our children's Little League experience. If you have had the chance to drive by the Locust Avenue Fields you will notice that the entire infields of both fields have been re-graded and covered with new sod. This work is being done with the help of Greg Sharp, of the Landtek Group, and the Village. A special thanks goes out to all for the hard work. We will be realigning both fields so that all is ready for the start of our 2009 season. We have also added new drains on the fields to help during inclement weather. Soon the outfields will be aerated and seeded as well. We will oversee significant repairs at
Ralph Avenue prior to the spring season. While the work is being done -- and throughout the remainder of the fall -- we would appreciate it if no one uses the field. This will ensure that we get the maximum benefit out of these repair exercises. In addition to field upgrades, the Babylon Little League will start construction of a new snack stand in the next few weeks.
On October 22nd Little League will be holding an open meeting and conducting an election for members of the 2009 Board of Directors. We hope that you can all join us and give us your input on the upcoming season.
I would like to thank everyone -- from the Board Members, to all of the Little League Families and the Village -- for making my first year as President an enjoyable experience. I hope that we were able to make the 2008 season an enjoyable one for all of you. As a board we try our best to succeed in following the Little League pledge, spirit and guidelines and we truly appreciate all of your support.

Minors Softball Wins the Silver!
Congratulations to the Girls Minor League Softball team for winning the Silver Bracket of the District 34 Tournament. The girls had a great summer season and showed consistent improvement from start to finish. The girls ended their season with a 9 – 7 victory over Larkfield to become the Champions of the Silver Bracket. They did this with timely hitting, speed on the basepaths and great pitching but it was there unbelievable defense that really separated them from all of the other teams. Over their last 4 games they had only 3 errors in the field with none in the Championship game. Coaches Rich Finelli. Jen Freyer, Rob Freyer and Kevin Going are extremely proud to have had the opportunity to coach such a great group of girls and want to thank all of the families for their support. Congratulations to Jamie Calderaro, Jenny Finelli, Samantha Fiore, Emily Freyer, Erin Going, Nicole Holder, Jackie Keane, Katherine Kelly, Allie Necroto, Bridgett Rohl, Alyssa Sasuk & Callie Walsberg on your Championship season

Congratulations to the Babylon 8 Year Old Team
Congratulations to the Babylon 8 year olds for a terrific run in the District 34 Summer ball tournament. The boys fought fiercely throughout, beating some highly ranked teams along the way to a 4th place overall finish (out of 22 teams!) and a berth in the Gold Medal round of the tournament. They worked very hard every practice, improved a lot and had a lot of fun along the way.
For most of the boys this was their first time facing live pitching. Despite this, over the season all of them made contact, got on base and scored. The team defense was solid throughout the year with several standout plays in both the infield and outfield. And our pitchers were terrific throughout the season keeping every game close and dominating some.
Their coaches and parents couldn’t be prouder of the boys’ effort and attitude and we all look forward to getting back out there again next year.
Thanks for a great tournament everyone!
Coach Mike Lavin

Fast Start for Boys 8 and 9 Year Old Teams
The Babylon 8 and 9 year old summer teams got off to a fast start in the District 34 Tournament. Both teams are in the "A" Pool and eligible to play for the Gold Medal! Here are some highlites of their games.
8 Year olds
The boys started the summer season with a bang as they won their first game in dominating fashion, 24-1 over Commack North Black. They got off to a fast start with impressive pitching from Matthew Lavin striking out 9 straight batters over the first 3 innings and a mammoth 3-run home run by Andrew Szuchy in the first inning. They followed that up with a second overwhelming effort, winning 20-3 vs. Bay Shore Grey, behind outstanding pitching from Joseph Rende and Ryan McCabe and some exceptional hitting, including a huge 2-out bases-loaded double by Joey McHugh and triple rocketed to right by Julian Romero. EVERY player on the team scored at least 1 run. It was a terrific team effort.
On Tuesday, the Babylon 8 year olds lost for the first time this summer 8-3 to top-ranked Half Hollow Hills National, putting their record at 2-1 for the initial round of the District 34 tournament. Babylon was the first team to break through and score any runs against HHH, led by Joseph Rende scoring one run and driving in 2 more. Frankie Vano and Andrew Szuchy both had solid outings on the mound enabling Babylon to keep the game tight and put a scare into their opponents.
9 Year Olds
1st game Babylon vs Larkfield. Two evenly matched teams that both played solid defense. Anthony Vano pitched a solid 4 and half innings of scoreless baseball and was relieved by Danny Levins who pitched his way out of bases loaded both innings to keep Larkfield from scoring. Babylon bats came alive in the 3rd inning with Kenny Rohl's in the park homerun that set the stage for a 3-0 win.
2nd game-Babylon vs North Babylon. Babylon's 9 yr olds played great defense and offense from the start against a solid North Babylon team. Brandon Beierle pitched 5 and two thirds inning and held North Babylon to 1 run, until he was relieved as he met his pitch limit. Babylon's bats were alive all game long with Max Kresek hitting a triple and a double with boys on bases. North Babylon scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to make it a 6-4 game, until Max Kresek came in to relieve Zach Amelia and closed the inning out in 8 pitches. BOTH WINS WOULDN'T BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE TEAM AS A WHOLE CONTRIBUTING.
3rd Game-Huge Victory by a score of 27-0. More details to follow. That is not a typo on the score.

A Letter from the President
To all Babylon Little League Families,
As our regular spring season winds down I wanted to thank all of the girls and boys who played with us this year. There were a lot of exciting moments on the fields this year, some nail biting games, upsets in the playoffs, great personal achievements and even a Perfect Game this year. We have watched as the boys and girls improved week after week. It was a joy to see that when you put good coaching and good sportsmanship together how much the kids and parents enjoy being at the fields.
As the board has stated in the past the success of the Little League is not possible without the help of all of our coaches and volunteers and we want to thank all of you for coming down to the fields week after week. It is because of you that all of our children will remember their Little League experience as being a positive one.
As our playoffs wrap up and we move into the Summer Tournament season we want to let you know that the boys and girls season does not need to end here. Some of our participants will be playing in the District 34 Tournament, if you get a chance try and catch a game, for those kids who are not playing in this Tournament, we once again will be holding our Summer Sandlot session this year. Every night Monday - Thursday we will invite all of the boys and girls down to Locust South to play under the lights. There will be two nights each for boys and girls. There will be a night for ages 7 - 9 and one for ages 10 - 12. As our plans get finalized we will post on the website and send emails out.
Also on Saturday July 12th we will be holding out first annual Movie/Trophy night at Locust South. We will be handing out trophies to all of the children as well as watching a movie on the big screen. There will be plenty of prizes and fun for everyone to enjoy. Check the Website for times and details
Last but not least as a board we try and do the best for the children and families of Babylon. We make a lot of decisions from small to big, some of these are successful and some are not as successful. We try to stay focused on the big picture, that this is Little League and not the big leagues. We have to remember that all our children want to do is play Baseball and Softball. They want to go down to the fields with their friends, hopefully play to the best of their ability and make their parents and teammates proud of them. We want the kids to have nothing but the best experience and keep them interested in playing and coming back year after year. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how we can improve, Our Children's Little League please let us know. We welcome all ideas, comments and constructive criticism. Without your feedback we cannot continue to improve year after year. Send an email to Babylon.Little.League@gmail.com with any suggestion, questions or comments. We also will be sending out forms to all so we can get feedback on your and your child's Little League experience this year, please send this back to us so we know how we are doing and how we can improve upon next year.
Thanks again to all and we look forward to seeing you this summer and next year.

A Letter from the President
To All Parents, Coaches, Players and Fans
Babylon Little League has a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY!! This policy includes League members, managers, coaches, players, parents and spectators. Any person violating any portion of this policy is subject to immediate suspension from the current game and the next game as well.
Our ZERO tolerance policy is in regards to offensive, demeaning, degrading or threatening language or actions towards any players, coaches, umpires or spectators. In keeping with the Williamsport and District 34 guidelines and ethics, as well as our Babylon Little League Local Rules, any behavior that is not in the well being of the game and children will not be allowed or tolerated.
If any players, coaches parents and or spectators exhibit this behavior as well as behavior deemed unsportsmanlike in nature they can be removed from the game and playing field immediately as well as risk suspension. All those involved in a game will be positive and motivational, especially toward the players. We do not tolerate profanity, negative comments or physical altercations. There is nothing more upsetting to a player than to see their manager or parent ejected from a game. Those ejected not only leave the game, but the complex as well. Don't let this happen!!
Remember before you say anything, how would you feel if someone said something derogatory or negative toward your child or spouse.
If any parent, player or coach should witness any behavior that they believe is detrimental to both the children and the league they are to report the incident to a Board Member of the Babylon Little League.
Any rule, regulation or policy infraction can and will be dealt with in the most expeditious manner.

Presidents Note: 2008 Memorial Day Hitting Derby
President’s Note: 2008 Memorial Day Hitting Derby
Hello to All Memorial Day is upon us and we are in full swing in our Little League Season. I wanted to take a moment to thank all of our families for being part of the Babylon Little League experience. We are now a month into the season and it seems as if all of the children are in Little League mode.
Before providing details about our annual Memorial Day Hitting Derby and Festivities, I wanted to take the time to thank all of our volunteers over the last few weekends for getting up early to help us prepare the fields for the kids. Over the last two Fridays we have had heavy rain but for the most part this has not stopped us from playing. As you may or may not know we recently purchased two large tarps to cover our Locust North and South Fields. We plan to get a tarp for Ralph Avenue, as well. But the tarps alone are not the reason we were able to play. At 7 AM on recent Saturdays I am happy to say that we have had over 30 volunteers down at all three fields removing tarps, soaking up water, turning over dirt and raking the fields. With these volunteers, Skip Gardner and the Village’s assistance, we were the only Little League in the area to get a full slate of games in on those days. I was at neighboring towns this weekend and for a small Village the turnout of volunteers dwarfed everyone else’s. The Board of Directors cannot thank all of you enough.
As a board we work hard to make sure that we are doing the best that we can so that each of your daughters and sons truly enjoy their Little League season. This could not be possible without the help of all of the volunteers, moms, dads and siblings that help us set up the fields and get the children down to the field to cheer them on. Thank you again.
This weekend is our annual Memorial Day Hitting Derby and Skills Competition. Starting at 9 AM we will be having events at Locust South for the Boys and Locust North for the girls. The day will be broken out for each division -- Farms through Majors. The boys and girls will be running the bases, fielding, throwing and hitting with the chance to win some great prizes. We also will be having my favorite contest: the Moms Hitting Derby on Locust North. This has always been a highlight of the day, watching the moms get up to bat, as the kids cheer them on. As always, our Moms will be playing for a grand prize. In addition to capturing the crown of Best Hitting Mom in Babylon 2008, one lucky mom will be awarded Broadway tickets. If you are around this weekend, please come down and join us.
Farms – 9 AM
Minors - 10 AM
Moms Hitting Derby - 11 AM
Majors -- 11:30 AM
Thanks again to everyone and if you should have any questions, problems or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us at babylon.little.league@gmail.com

Rain? We Laugh at the Rain!
 | | | Frank Bruno and Ricky Young with the new tarps. |
I am sure you have all thought that rain on the day of your game or rain the night before and there is no way the fields will be playable because of the mud and puddles that accumulate. Well, think again! Just drive by the Locust Fields and you just might see a brand new sight. It is two 100x100 foot tarps purchased by the Little League to protect the fields from the dreaded rain. The tarps were first put down by the hard working members of the Board of Directors on Thursday night, May 15, as the Friday forecast was for rain all day and night. The tarps will protect the infields and keep our fields in the best possible shape.
This is cool!

It Did Not Rain On Our Parade! (just a little on our ceremony)
 | | | Mayor Scordino throws out the first softball pitch of the year! | |
It was a great Opening Day for the Babylon Little League on April 12. The downpours that came Friday night were gone, but the damage to the Locust Avenue Fields was extensive. Thanks go out to Skip Gardner and Scott Lockwood for getting the field in shape for the Opening Day Ceremonies along with the guys on the Board of Directors who were out there at 7:30 AM working away to get the field ready. It was truly a fantastic job.
The Parade through the Village from Village Hall to the Locust Fields was a happy and joyous one. It was lead by the Babylon Fire Department band and trucks. Children from the T-Ball Division all the way through the Majors baseball and softball were cheered by parents, relatives, friends and the merchants of Babylon Village along the route. Present at the field was the Babylon Village Council Trustees, Kevin Muldowney, Anthony Davida, Alice Vendervelt and Debbie Basile. Lindsey Henry and Corrine DiSomme were present representing the Town of Babylon. State Senator Owen Johnson announced that $20,000 has been allocated to the Little League to help pay for Snack Stand improvements, which drew a loud cheer. Mayor Ralph Scordino threw out the first softball pitch. Darrell Conway was honored by the Little League for his years of dedication and devotion to the BLL. He threw out the ceremonial first baseball pitch. Lisa Tarpinian a student at Babylon HS, sang the Star Spangled Banner. The Ceremonies got a little downpour of rain towards the end, but the rain stopped and all raffles and prizes were awarded. A very special thank you goes out to Tim McCaffrey of the Babylon Little League for putting all the Opening Day Ceremonies together.
There was baseball to be played although there was a 1 hour delay for more rain. In the Opening Game in the Minors Division, the A’s came back from an early deficit to beat the Yankees 10-9. The Majors Division opener saw in a very well played and exciting game, the Orioles topped the Mets 5-4. Jack Faccibene's infield single drove in Spencer Meyerson for the winning run in the bottom of the 6th. The Mets got the tieing run in the top of the 6th on Eric Schweitzer's 2 out single. The Mets got excellent pitching from Ryan O'Connor, Steven Cavalieri and Nick Crawford. Ryan also had a long triple. The Orioles pitchers combined for 12 strike outs. Will Grady started and had 7 k's. Spencer Meyerson had 5 K's and got the win in relief only giving up 1 run in 3 innings. Pete Donaldson was 2 for 2 with 2RBI's. Jack Faccibene was 3 for 3 with 2RBI's and got the game ball for the O's. In the Nightcap, the Yankees beat the Blue Jays by a score of 5-4 in another exciting well played game. On Monday April 14, the Boys Minors Division saw 4 more teams in action. The Pirates beat the Giants 7-6 in a hard fought game. Both teams pitched extremely well and are very evenly matched. Also on Monday the White Sox got off to a fast start. The final score was 14-2 in favor of the White Sox. Riley Moran was the starter for the White Sox - Owen McCaffrey came in for 3 innings of relief. Brian Lavin started the offensive rally for the White Sox with a first inning triple - driving home 3 runs. A young Blue Jays team celebrated 3 player birthdays this week. They played a tough game against the White Sox. A fun time was had by all.

A Letter From the President Regarding West Babylon
To all Babylon Little League Parents and Participants
Questions are being brought to our attention in regards to the West Babylon teams playing in our league this year. Due to problems in West Babylon the sanctioned Williamsport Little League enrollment and registration numbers are not sufficient enough to have their own league. Last year we were approached by both West Babylon and District 34 (our governing local Little League) and asked if we could help the West Babylon Little League out. As you all know last year the individual West Babylon boys joined our league and were dispersed among the teams. This year they were able to raise their numbers enough where they are able to actually put together teams to play in our league. Just as last year as a board we voted to allow them to play in our league and to bring full teams in. As a board we felt that this was the best way to go so that the Babylon boys could play and be coached by Babylon and the West Babylon boys could play and be coached by West Babylon.
This decision was not what we as a Little League were looking for, we did not do this to increase our enrollment or to make additional money. We did this because we felt it was in the best interest of the children of West Babylon and felt that in the keeping with the spirit of Little League it was the right thing to do. It is our hopes that next year West Babylon will get back on their feet and play within their boundaries.
Now by allowing West Babylon to join our league we will need to play some of our Baseball and Softball games at West Babylon Fields. These fields are no more than an extra 2 mile ride at most for all families in Babylon. We are hoping that this is not too much of an inconvenience. As a Babylon Little League Softball Coach over the last 7 years, due to our numbers we have been forced to travel to play against West Babylon and other neighboring towns, I have found that the travel was not so bad. To some of the children it is also a little exciting to play at a new field. We have met with the West Babylon Little League Board and we are going over the Logistics on game schedules now. We have raised any concerns that we have in regards to the fields with the West Babylon Little League and they are working on them now. Our full year schedule is behind schedule in getting out to all but we hope to able to have it by Opening Day. Any games at the beginning of the year will be hand delivered to the individual coaches.
In terms of the concerns that West Babylon may not play by our Fair Play rules or of having teams stacked we have gone over these concerns with them. We have informed them that if they wish to play in the Babylon Little League that these must be adhered to. They have assured us that they will play by our rules and guidelines and that they have dispersed the boys out so that the teams are as equal as possible. We have forwarded a copy of our Babylon rules and guidelines, these were given to each of our coaches and are posted on our Website, to the President of the West Babylon Little League. These in turn will be given to each of the West Babylon coaches so that they too can fully understand, follow and enforce that these rules are being adhered to. The time spent to put these together are fully appreciated by the West Babylon Little League and they are in agreement with them.
This year West Babylon will have (3) Teams in Majors . (1) Team in Minors and (2) Teams in the Farms divisions in our Baseball Program. Much like in any inter-town sport we have to have faith that all coaches are putting the interests of the children first, are playing by not only the assigned rules given to them but know in their hearts what is truly right and wrong. These West Babylon coaches are no different than our own Babylon Coaches they have volunteered their time and have signed up to be coaches and mentors not only for their own children but for the children on all opposing teams. Just like our Babylon coaches they too know how their actions can positively or negatively affect each and every child. Unfortunately this may not always be the case, in our own youth leagues we have come across instances where we feel that our own neighbors are not coaching fairly, are coaching just to win or put their own interests ahead of the children. As a board we truly believe that there will not be any problems in regards to these concerns. But if a problem should arise, Babylon vs. Babylon or Babylon vs. West Babylon it should be addressed calmly during the game and if the coaches can still not come to an agreement then the matter should be brought to the attention of the League Director and or myself, after the conclusion of the game. At no time should an argument or outburst occur in front of the children. We all have to remember that what we are talking about is regular season Little League for children from the ages of 7 – 12. As coaches we should be making sure that we teach the basics of the game. We should be instilling true sportsmanship into our children. While we should be coaching to win we have to remember that the regular season of Little League is instructional in nature and is meant as a stepping stone to the next level. As a coach you can both coach to win and be fair to all children. But remember a good coach is not made up of how many wins you have but of how many of your players have a good experience and come back the following year.
We truly appreciate your understanding and we are looking forward to an exciting season. Should you have any further questions or concerns please reach out to me or your League Director.
Sincerely,
Kevin Going
Babylon Little League President

President's Perspective
President’s Perspective
Little League Baseball Is All About The Journey -- Not The Destination
There seems to be a growing trend in sports where young players, prodded by their parents, are looking to advance to the next level as fast as possible. But the big question is: What exactly does the “next level” really mean to Little League baseball and softball players between the ages of six and 12.
As parents of young boys and girls, we need to slow down and focus on what really matters in youth sports. Little League and other youth sports provide an excellent outlet to help our children grow and learn some of life’s great lessons, such as the value of hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing gracefully and, most importantly, leadership.
The Babylon Little League places players in division – starting with T-Ball and advancing through Farms, Minors and Majors - based on age guidelines established by the international little league organization. Because the development curve of young athletes varies widely, it is rare that the best Farm-level players end up being the best Major-level players and just because a child is the best Major level player does not mean he or she is bound for the major leagues or the cover of Sports Illustrated. No matter how hard we may push as parents and adults, nature will set a speed limit on development that we can’t accelerate or eliminate. Sometimes we try and force our children to climb the ladder so fast that we actually set them back, burn them out or cause them to fail.
Too many parents and children get ahead of themselves and place way too much importance on winning and their personal achievements in sports between six and 12 years of age, instead of being patient and understanding the significance of training and appropriate development during this period of a child’s life.
Many times we as parents feel that our children suffer in some way by playing with children of lesser ability. We should instead see this as an opportunity to provide a life lesson, as well as training for the future. Through their entire lives, children will be in situations where they must learn to function and socialize with people of all different levels of ability. At every step in life there will always be someone who is more talented or further advanced than another in both work and play. This is called competition and competition will bring out the best and worst in a child, as well as an adult. It is during this time that we either praise our children or teach them the meaning of being a good competitor, teammate and person. Moreover, without the children of lesser ability you do not and will not have a league.
There is a lot to be said for playing at the level where you have the best chance to hit, field and make plays with confidence. If a player is accelerated to a level that is over his or her head, they seem to play with survival skills instead of acquired skills. It has been said that to truly learn you have to fail first -- and with failure comes adversity. Hopefully that adversity will lead a child to dig down deeper and to try a little harder. And if they do this, success is sure to follow. The most fertile environment for proper development – of both skills and temperament --is one that combines adversity and success.
Very few children involved in youth sports end up playing a Division 1 sport, much less get the chance to be a professional. What matters most is the journey. It is all about the hours, days and years spent with family and friends in playing sports that we enjoy and love. As parents we should cherish these times so we don’t miss out on seeing our children experience the joy of making that one catch, one hit or one play that brings them back to the field year after year.

Our Website - Your Website
Hello Babylon Little League fans. We are very excited about our website this year. This will be your #1 source for information and everything you always wanted to know about Babylon Little League. We are taking a very pro-active approach to our site this year.
As you can see on the welcome page, Opening Day is fast approaching, and as it nears, our website will be filling up with information and fun. Right now, the teams for each division are added. This is something new to BLL. Yes, we will still have sponsors (and we encourage you to support them!) but teams will now have "real" major league names. Along with that, all players will receive a real hat and uniform colors of their team!
Another new feature will be schedules and standing listed right on the website. As things are finalized, schedules will be posted. As game results come in, they will go right on the website and you will be able to see updated standings. Along with that, anything else you would like to see such as game highlights, photos or news stories can go right on the site. There will be a lot of information coming on how this will be done.
Ever wonder if your child's game is still on? How many times have you heard this on the weather forecast, "Possible late day thunder storms"? Well, our website will be a good source for game cancellations. We will be posting updates as frequently as possible, such as "As of 4:00pm games are still on". We hope to use our site as much as possible for game cancellations.
That's about it for now. We are really excited about the season and are counting down the days until Opening Day!
As always, if you have any questions or comments send an email to Rich Meyerson at:
