Mini: Kindergarten and 1st grades Beginner & Novice

The Mini program is designed to introduce younger players to field hockey in an atmosphere of fun and safety given their young age. The objective will be focused on fun, enjoyment, and learning a new sport.

One hour weekly practice will emphasize fundamental skills (ball handling, dribbling, passing etc.) by introducing a new skill weekly while continuing to develop all previously taught skills.

Scrimmages will be introduced beginning in Week 4, if the girls progress sufficiently, to showcase their new talents.

• Field size: approximately 25 yds by 60 yds (1/4 the size of full field)

• Team Format:
    - Teams play 6 V 6
    - Team makeup will be dependent on number of registrants.

• Modified rules used

 

Intramural Program: Grades 2 – 12 Beginner & Novice

The Intramural program is designed to introduce beginner and novice players to field hockey in an atmosphere of fun. The program’s objectives are to maximize player enjoyment, teach fundamental skills, and introduce controlled game settings.

Practice:

For the first two weeks, two practice sessions per week will be dedicated to teaching fundamental skills and how to play the game.

Weekend games will be introduced after this introductory timeframe and weekly practices will be reduced to one session per week.

Once weekly practices will continue to emphasize fundamental skills, while weekend games will give the girls the chance to put their new skills into a game scenario.

Games:
• 55 minutes in length (two 25 minute halves with a 5 minute half-time).

• Field size
- Grades 2, 3 & 4: approximately 50 yd's by 60 yd's (1/2 the size of a full field)

- Grades 5+: approximately 100 yd's by 60 yd's (regulation middle school size)

• Rules
- Grades 2, 3 & 4: Modified Rules used
- Grades 5+: PIAA rules used

Team Makeup:
• Team size
- Grades 2, 3 & 4: 8 v 8
- Grades 5+: 11 V 11
- Teams will be divided by grade and experience based on the number of players who register.

 

Intermediate Program: 5th - 12th grades Experienced Players

The Intermediate program is designed for a more experienced player with prior field hockey experience. Some local travel for play days may be required.

For the first two weeks, two practice sessions per week will be dedicated to teaching fundamental skills. Weekend games will be introduced after this introductory timeframe and practices will be reduced to one session per week. The games will be 55 minutes in length (two 25 minute halves with a 5 minute half-time).

Practices and games will be scheduled in accordance with prior experience and with local teams who have the same age group and experience levels. Weekly games feature exciting competition, although winning and losing are still a low priority.

• Field size: approximately 100 yd's by 60 yds (Regulation middle school size)

• Team Format:
- Teams play 11 V 11
- Team makeup will be dependent on number of registrants.
