The following is a description of the different instructional and competitive leagues BTAA participates:
AGES 6-7
The 6 and 7 year old basketball program is an in-house instructional league that focuses on the fundamentals and basic skills of basketball. Players will learn and practice such skills as lay-ups, dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork and conditioning drills. Players will also learn basic offensive and defensive sets, plays such as the 'give and go', 'pick and roll' and 'back door' and the rules of basketball. The children will be divided into teams of 10 or 12 players, depending on the number of players. I will also attempt to have one team consisting of all girls. Games will be played in-house against other BTAA teams with the emphasis on basketball fundamentals and teamwork, not on the score.
AGE 8
The 8 year old basketball program is another instructional league that also focuses on the fundamentals and basic skills of basketball. Players will continue to learn and practice the basic skills of basketball with more advanced drills and techniques. Players will learn zone and man-to-man defenses, in-bound plays and offenses against zone and man-to-man defenses. The teams will play in the Community Basketball League nine year old non-competive league. The games have official referees and the players are exposed to free throws, personal fouls and traveling and double-dribbling. The coaches have the option of keeping score and again the emphasis will be on basketball fundamentals and teamwork. No official standings are kept in the league. The players will have their first taste of playing competitive basketball that will prepare them for the following year. Teams will consist of 10 to 12 players with one or two girl teams.
AGES 9-15
These players are participating in the Community Basketball League. The CBL is a competitive basketball league that involves teams throughout the Lehigh Valley and eastern New Jersey. The CBL has a boy's league and a women's league. Each league is divided into age groups; U9, U10, U11, U12 and U15. Traveling is usually limited to within 30 minutes. The games are officiated and have two 20 minute halves with running time, until the last two minutes of the game when time stops for fouls, out of bounds, etc. League standings are kept and the top four teams in each division make the playoffs. Games usually start in late November and run into early March. Teams consist of 10 to 12 players, depending on the total number of players. Practices are more intense as players need to be conditioned and learn multiple offenses, defenses and in-bound plays. To learn more about the CBL, go to their website at www.cblbasketball.Org or clink on the link section at the left of this page.
The Pates Program
The Pates program is geared for the more serious basketball player. Practices are more intense and the offenses and defenses run are more complex. The Pates program follows the Freedom High School boys and girls basketball programs. In other words, the Pates teams run basically the same offenses and defenses as the Freedom High School teams. This is to prepare potential basketball players for high school. Games are played with four quarters and the game clock stops for fouls, out of bounds, etc. Pressing is permitted throughout the entire game. The Bulldogs have one Pates team for each of the following age groups, girls 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade and boys 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade. Any player wishing to play on one of the Pates team must tryout. Tryouts are typically held mid to late October. Each team usually carries around 12 players on the roster. CBL rules prohibit any player rostered on a CBL team to be rostered on another team. For example, if you play on a Pates team, you cannot play in the CBL League. But, a player can play both on a Pates team and on a middle school team. The Pates teams play in the Eastern Lehigh Valley League, which included teams from Allentown, Parkland, Nazareth, Bethlehem and other neighboring areas. The Pates home games are played at Freedom High School. Away games are usually within 1/2 hour travel time. All players eligible are encouraged to tryout for the Pates. Additional information about the Pates teams and sign-up forms will be available at basketball sign-ups.
