Shanahan girls' volleyball team ranked No. 2 in state
Bishop Shanahan volleyball coach Greg Ashman was hoping his team could "remain anonymous" for the early part of the season. That won't happen.

In its first top 10 poll of the season, the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association ranked the Eagles No. 2, behind Allentown Central Catholic in Class AAA.

"I was hoping we could come out and surprise some people," said Ashman, who is in his sixth season at Shanahan. "We have a good team with a lot of experience."

Although Ashman might have liked to fly low early, that would have been hard to do since the Eagles are coming off a solid 2008 season and have several returnees.

Shanahan was 14-2 during the regular season last year, losing only to Avon Grove and three-time Class AA champion Merion Mercy. The Eagles finished 15-3 overall, and they opened this season with an impressive 3-0 Ches-Mont League National Division win over West Chester Henderson on Wednesday.

"I know I'm excited about this team," said senior outside hitter Emily Carlin. "I had hoped we could fly below the radar a little, too, but I think we're ready to live up to our ranking."

Carlin will sign her letter of intent to play for Radford in Virginia in November. The 6-foot Carlin and 5-10 senior Amanda Nickels combined for 14 kills against Henderson.

"Our chemistry is good," Carlin said. "Many of us have been playing together for four years or even longer" with club teams.

Senior center Katie Pisano said the team could be the school's best in years. She led several impressive service runs against Henderson.

"I know it's the best I've seen in a while," Pisano said. The 2006 squad finished third in the state.

In addition to Bishop Shanahan, Upper Merion and Unionville are in the PVCA top 10. The Upper Merion Vikings are ranked seventh, and the Indians are three notches below at No. 10.

In the Class AA, three-time defending state champion Merion Mercy is ranked No. 1, with Archbishop Carroll at No. 8.
