Volunteer Coaches and Managers

If you are reading this section you must be interested (or at least curious) about coaching or managing a team in the league.  Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on taking on the most rewarding and fun position in the league.

The most important positions in the league are the Coach(s) and Manager of each team.  It is also the most difficult position to get volunteer parents to step into.  We want and need your help in introducing and teaching softball to these young ladies.  That is why we are happy and excited to have you thinking about coaching and/or managing a team in the league.  Whether it is a 6U Pee Wee team or one of our 12U or 14U teams we want your energy and knowledge.

Now, many of you may not think you can handle coaching or managing a team.  Or you feel that you don’t have the knowledge or skill to help.  As part of your volunteering we are providing coaching and training for you!!!  Our league has developed, in conjunction with some of the local high school and college teams, a training seminar that will help you with:

·         Expectation for the level of girls you will be coaching

·         Help with a coaching plan that will keep your girls interested and having fun

·         Drills appropriate for the level of girls you will be coaching

·         A clear definition and expectation of you as a coach or manager of your team

·         Suggestions for how to interact with your girls

·         Setting up a group of mentors who you can contact to bounce ideas off of

This Coaches/Managers clinic is required of anyone who is volunteering for these positions.  They will be split into two (2) levels:

1.       Upper Level Coaches Clinic (for volunteers in the 10U, 12U, and 14U divisions) – This session will be designed to give more advanced information associated with skills, practice planning, etc.   Along with our Clinics Commissioners (Rick Kazakoff and Frank Magnani), Steve Rianda, Head Softball Coach of Notre Dame de Namur University will be joining the Instructors along with his players.

2.       Coaches Clinic (for volunteers in the 6U and 8U divisions) – This session will be designed for introducing basic skills and techniques to the players.  Commissioners Rick Kazakoff and Frank Magnani along with Player Agent Mike Shipley will be conducting this clinic which will focus on throwing, hitting, basic rules of the game, and just letting the girls have fun with the game.

Again, all coaches and managers are required to attend the clinic that is appropriate for the level they are volunteering for.  In addition, these clinics are also open to any parent/guardian who just wants to know more about the game, so as to help their daughter with her development.  These clinics are FREE to members of the league. 

The dates for these clinics are listed below:

Upper Level Coaches Clinic – January 9^th, at Notre Dame de Namur University field, Time to be announced (a time will be listed by Dec. 1^st)

Coaches Clinic – Date and Time to be determined (A date and time will be listed by Dec. 1^st)

Also, at least one member of the coaching/managerial staff of each team is required to be ACE certified (it is even more desirable if all members of the coaches and managers have ACE certification).  ACE certification (Achieve, Certify, Educate) is affiliated with the American Softball Association (ASA) and provides training of, and background checks of the individuals who become members.  The charge is $25 and will provide a certificate demonstrating completion of the training and background check.  You also become an automatic member of ASA and which includes insurance during your participation this season.  You can sign-up for coaching and complete your ACE certification later.  But, it must be completed before practice starts in February.

The Belmont/Redwood Shores Youth Softball Association is an organization run by volunteers from our community.  Our local sponsors are the life and blood of our league.  We depend on their generosity to help with the costs of equipment, uniforms, umpire fees, insurance, field repair and improvements, coach and player training and many other costs associated with maintaining our league so that our players (girls 5 to 14) may learn the game of softball, work as a team, build self esteem and most importantly, have fun.   

In these difficult economic times we do not take your generosity for granted.  Your support of the league will be promoted and supported by every member of our league.
