Mustangs Fall to DeMatha in Intense Semi-Final Match-Up
The Mustangs lost to the DeMatha Stags 2-1 in a hard fought semi-final match at Trinity College. DeMatha went up 1-0 in the latter part of the first half. But the Mustangs answered right back when Nik Holder netted a fine shot off of a solid pass from Ryan Leslie. With the score tied at 1-1, both teams came out with intensity in the second half. But midway through the half, DeMatha was able to tally a goal to go up 2-1. Despite strong efforts on the attack, including two late game corner kicks, the Mustangs couldn't convert an equalizer. Forwards Greg Carbott, Matt Malecki, and Holder put pressure on DeMatha's defense throughout the match. Max Allegro, Daniel Artin, Matt Cullen, Steven Czecka, Kyle Lauermann, Andrew DeGennaro, and Leslie were strong in the midfield, executing excellent passing combinations to move the ball up the field on the attack. Matt Michael, Mayowa Alli, Jorden Howard, and Josh King turned in exceptional play on defense. Keeper Jeff Meekins capped off a terrific season by making some phenominal saves in the semi-final match. Congratulations to the Mustangs team on a fantastic season! Including their play-off run, the Mustangs finished the season with a WCAC record of 9-7-4 and an overall record of 11-11-5. Wednesday, October 28
Mustangs Head to WCAC Semi-Finals
The Mustangs advanced to the WCAC semi-finals with a quarterfinal win over Archbishop Carroll in penalty kicks, after two overtimes left the score knotted 1-1. In the first half, Ryan Leslie slotted a solid pass to Greg Carbott, who put the Mustangs ahead 1-0 with a hard hit shot out of reach of Carroll's keeper. Carroll answered back late in the game with the tying goal on a break away. The two teams played to a draw in overtime and went to penalty kicks to break the tie. Dan Artin, Carbott, Leslie, and Max Allegro netted penalty kicks for the Mustangs in the PK shootout. Keeper Jeff Meekins made a terrific save on Carroll's first PK and Carroll's fourth kick sailed high to give the Mustangs the 4-2 edge in the shootout and the victory. Meekins was sharp in goal for the entire match, supported by outstanding defensive play from Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, and Jorden Howard. Steven Czecka, Matt Cullen, Andrew DeGennaro, Kyle Lauermann, Leslie, Allegro, and Artin controlled the midfield while forwards Matt Malecki, Nik Holder, and Carbott put pressure on the Carroll keeper throughout the match. Mustangs Win Senior Game vs St. Mary's Ryken to Close Out WCAC Regular Season
The Mustangs defeated St. Mary's Ryken 2-1 on Senior Day to finish the WCAC regular season with an 8-6-4 record. Seniors Max Allegro and Matt Malecki each tallied a goal for the Mustangs in the first half, with assists by Seniors Daniel Artin and Matt Michael. Seniors Ryan Leslie, Greg Carbott, Kyle Lauermann, and Matt Cullen also came up with big plays in the midfield and on the attack throughout the match. Senior keeper Jeff Meekins was brilliant in goal, stopping 6 tough shots from a formidable Ryken offense. Seniors Mayowa Alli, Keith Payne, and Michael and Junior Jorden Howard lent superb defensive play to hold Ryken scoreless for most of the match. But with under a minute to play, Ryken was awarded a free kick from about the 30 yard line and fired a perfectly placed shot out of Meekins' reach to tally their only goal of the match. The Mustangs currently sit in 4th place in the WCAC and await the outcome of the Carroll vs O'Connell match tomorrow to see if they'll face Carroll at home or away in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Mustangs Get Decisive Win Over Ireton
Max Allegro led the Mustangs with a hat trick and Matt Malecki added a goal to give the Mustangs a 4-0 win over Ireton. Ryan Leslie, Andrew DeGennaro, Matt Michael, and Greg Carbott had assists. Keeper Jeff Meekins led the defensive effort, earning his 6th shut-out of the season. Mustangs Defeat St. John's in Homecoming Match
After defeating the St. John's Cadets 2-1 in Friday's Homecoming match, the Mustangs enter the last week of WCAC regular season play in 6th place. Greg Carbott led the Mustangs offense against the Cadets, netting both goals. His first goal came in the early minutes of the match off of a strong pass from Ryan Leslie to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Cadets tied it up in the second half on a free kick just outside the box. The Mustangs fought hard for the go-ahead goal throughout the second half, with quality shots on goal coming from Max Allegro, Matt Malecki, Nik Holder, Dan Artin, Mayowa Alli, and Matt Michael. But with 5 minutes remaining, Alli's through ball found Carbott streaking towards the goal. Carbott's finely placed shot gave the Mustangs the victory and extended their WCAC record to 6-6-4. Keeper Jeff Meekins was tough between the pipes despite the adverse weather conditions. He got solid defensive support throughout the match from Matt Cullen, Josh King, Michael, and Alli. Alumni vs Varsity Soccer Game
The annual Alumni vs Varsity Mustangs soccer game will take place on Saturday, October 17 (Homecoming weekend) at 9:00 a.m. at BMHS. Lunch will follow for all participants. Attention VARSITY PLAYERS: All Varsity players, please bring one 12-pack of canned sodas. Also, if your last name starts with A-H, bring a dessert. Mustangs Defeat Eagles 3-2
The Mustangs defeated the defending WCAC champion Gonzaga Eagles for the second time this season, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the first half. Max Allegro netted the Mustangs' first goal off of a strong free kick from Mayowa Alli. Greg Carbott tallied the second goal with Matt Malecki earning the assist. Late in the half, Gonzaga drew a foul in the box and netted the resulting PK to narrow the Mustangs lead. In the second half, Gonzaga scored a quick goal to tie the game. But with 8 minutes remaining, Chris Martinette brought the ball up the sideline and sent a well-timed cross to Malecki, who buried his shot for the game winner. Keeper Jeff Meekins again kept the Mustangs in the match, making 10 great saves to earn the win. He was supported by superb defensive efforts from Matt Michael, Josh King, Jorden Howard, and Alli. Mustangs Win Big over Paul VI
Keeper Jeff Meekins earned his 4th shut-out of the season, saving a penalty kick and coming up with some other tough saves throughout the match, as the Mustangs rolled past Paul VI with a 3-0 victory. Matt Michael, Mayowa Alli, Jorden Howard, Keith Payne, and Josh King also helped to anchor the defense with superb play. Greg Carbott, Max Allegro, and Ryan Leslie led the offense, tallying a goal apiece for the Mustangs, while Andrew DeGennaro and Leslie each earned an assist. Matt Malecki, Daniel Artin, Stephen Czecka, Nik Holder, Kyle Lauerman, Chris Martinette, Kyle Martin, and Ryan Scanlon also lent excellent play in the midfield and on the attack to ensure the win. The Mustangs tied Carroll 1-1. Carroll scored early in the match and were up 1-0 at the half. Ryan Leslie scored the tying goal for the Mustangs in the second half with Matt Michael earning the assist. Thursday, September 24
Mustangs Earn Win over Don Bosco
The Mustangs defeated Don Bosco 5-0 in a non-league match on Wednesday. Greg Carbott netted the Mustangs' first goal with the assist credited to Max Allegro. Ryan Leslie's finely placed penalty kick increased the lead to 2-0 at the half. In the second half, Allegro started off the scoring with a hard shot past Don Bosco's keeper. Minutes later, Leslie sent a great cross to Nik Holder, who tallied his first goal of the season with an excellent shot. Leslie earned his second assist of the day on a fine pass to Matt Malecki, whose strong shot deflected off the opposing defender and sailed into the net. Forwards Andrew DeGennaro and Chris Martinette also put pressure on the opposing defense throughout the match. Matt Michael, Steven Czecka, Kyle Lauermann, Carbott, and Leslie controlled the game early from the midfield, while Ryan Scanlon, Kyle Martin, and Holder took over in later minutes, executing great second half play; Martin also had two solid second half shots on goal. Keeper Jeff Meekins earned his third shut-out of the season, with Keith Payne, Josh King, Mayowa Alli, and Jorden Howard turning in superb defensive play. Thursday, September 24
Mustangs Tie St. Mary's Ryken
The Mustangs tied St. Mary's Ryken 2-2 in an intense match to extend their league record to 3-4-2 and put them in 4th place in the WCAC. In the second half, Max Allegro tallied a goal for the Mustangs with Michael earning the assist. But again, Ryken answered right back to tie the score. Despite several quality drives by both teams late in the match, the game ended in a tie. Also playing strong for the Mustangs on the attack and in the midfield were Andrew DeGennaro, Matt Malecki, Chris Martinette, Greg Carbott, Dan Artin, Steven Czecka, Kyle Lauermann, and Nik Holder. Mustangs Defeat St. John's
The Mustangs extended their WCAC league record to 3-4-0 with a 3-2 victory over St. John's. St. John's took an early 1-0 lead until Matt Michael tallied a strong shot for the Mustangs off of a good pass from Steven Czecka. St. John's again took the lead, but Max Allegro answered right back for the Mustangs, heading in a well-placed shot off of a throw in from Josh King to knot the score at 2-2 at the half. The second half remained dead-locked due to strong play by both defenses. Then with 6 minutes remaining, Dan Artin slotted a nice pass to Michael, who scored his second goal of the match and the game winner! Mustangs Win vs Gonzaga!
After playing an evenly matched first half to an 0-0 draw, the Mustangs came out hot in the second half versus the Gonzaga Eagles. Early in the half, Ryan Leslie sent a perfect cross into the box, where Kyle Lauermann and Andrew DeGennaro were both well-positioned to score. Lauermann received the cross and sent a solid shot into the net to put the Mustangs up 1-0. Later in the half, Dan Artin sent a free kick from about the 40 yard line to Max Allegro in the box . . . Allegro directed a header just past the Gonzaga keeper to extend the Mustangs' lead to 2-0. Gonzaga put pressure on the Mustangs late in the game, but intense play from Keeper Jeff Meekins and defenders Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, and Artin thwarted the Eagles' attack. Matt Cullen and Keith Payne also contributed tough defensive play at key points in the match. Contributing to the win with strong play in the midfield and on the attack were Matt Malecki, Steven Czecka, Chris Martinette, and Nik Holder. Holy Cross Shootout
The Mustangs traveled to Akron, Ohio, over Labor Day weekend for the Holy Cross Shootout. After falling in a tough match to Western Reserve Academy on Saturday, the team returned on Sunday to play a fantastic match against Archbishop Hoban. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie at the half. About 7 minutes into the second half, Mayowa Alli headed in a goal for the Mustangs off of Ryan Leslie's well-played free kick from near the corner kick spot. In an unfortunate scramble for the ball, an own goal slipped just past the Mustangs keeper, allowing Hoban to tie the score at 1-1. With a few seconds remaining in the game, Mitch August slotted a good pass to Matt Michael. Michael beat the defender and fired a strong shot from the 35 yard line that sailed past the Hoban keeper. But the referee ruled that time had expired before the goal scored, resulting in a 1-1 tie for the match. Jeff Meekins and Nik Holder were sharp between the pipes in both matches, supported by excellent defensive play from Matt Cullen, Keith Payne, Jorden Howard, Michael, and Alli. Max Allegro, Andrew DeGennaro, Greg Carbott, Dan Artin, Steven Czecka, Chris Martinette, Kyle Lauermann, Kyle Martin, Ryan Scanlan, Christian Saravia, Anthony Saravia, William Shelton, Leslie, and August were strong on the attack and in the midfield throughout the tournament.

Mustangs Defeat Paul VI on the Road!
The Mustangs traveled to Virginia on Tuesday evening and earned a 3-2 victory over the Paul VI Panthers in a closely contested match. In the first half, Mayowa Alli's long ball over the Panthers' defense found Matt Malecki, who tallied the Mustangs' first goal of the night. PVI answered back to tie the score. But before the half was over, Alli put the Mustangs ahead 2-1, netting a well-placed free kick. In the second half, Matt Michael sent a long pass to Max Allegro, who slotted a crisp ball to Andrew DeGennaro. DeGennaro connected with Malecki, who scored his second goal of the game to put the Mustangs up 3-1. The Panthers narrowed the Mustangs lead, converting a corner kick late in the game, to make the final score 3-2. Nik Holder and Jeff Meekins split time between the pipes and each came up with tough saves at key points in the match. They were supported by great defensive play from Matt Cullen, Jorden Howard, Michael, and Alli. Dan Artin, Ryan Leslie, Greg Carbott, Chris Martinette, Kyle Lauermann, and Meekins turned in excellent play in the midfield to contribute to the win. Mustangs Drop Hard Fought Quarterfinal Match to Gonzaga
After a strong regular season finish and exciting victory over Bishop Ireton in the first round of the playoffs, the Mustangs season came to an end against the first place Gonzaga Eagles after a tough fought quarterfinal match. Joey Gorirossi netted the Mustangs goal with a finely placed shot off of a crisp pass from Dan Artin. Keeper John Leimbach played a great game between the pipes despite the swirling winds, supported by excellent defensive efforts from Matt Cullen, Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, Jorden Howard, and Keith Payne. Leading the Mustangs attack with strong offensive runs were Max Allegro, Matt Malecki, Greg Carbott, and Gorirossi, while Jeff Meekins, Ryan Leslie, Andrew DeGennaro, Chris Martinette, C.J. Dorsey, Kyle Lauermann, and Kyle Martin played solid in the midfield. Mustangs Win Playoff Game vs Ireton!
The Mustangs defeated Bishop Ireton 4-2 in the first round of the WCAC playoffs. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, but the second half proved to be very exciting! The Mustangs scored first when Max Allegro netted a good cross from Matt Malecki. Ireton answered with a goal of their own to tie up the score. The Mustangs continued to press hard on the attack, and midway through the half Greg Carbott tallied a goal off of a pass from Allegro. Ireton answered right back on the kick off to knot the score at 2-2. A corner kick from Joey Gorirossi set up the go-ahead goal scored by Allegro, his second on the day that would give the Mustangs the lead for good. Gorirossi widened the lead when he buried the ball into the net following up a great shot by Andrew DeGennaro that hit the crossbar. Ryan Leslie, Dan Artin, and Jeff Meekins also were superb on the attack and in the midfield, while Chris Martinette came in late in the game to shore up the midfield in the final minutes. Keeper John Leimbach and defenders Matt Michael, Mayowa Alli, and Matt Cullen again played tremendous defense throughout the match to help earn the win for the Mustangs! Congratulations also to the Lady Mustangs who defeated Ireton 2-1 (PKs) in an exciting match-up that followed the men's game! Mustangs Defeat Ryken in Senior/Homecoming Game!
The Mustangs earned a 3-2 victory in their homecoming/senior day match vs St. Mary's Ryken. Ryken struck first in the 21st minute of play to take the lead. The Mustangs answered back to tie the score at 1-1 just before halftime when Ryan Leslie crossed a perfect ball to Matt Malecki in front of the goal, who buried his shot. The Mustangs came out on fire in the 2nd half, scoring two quick goals. Malecki scored the go ahead goal off of a beautiful through ball from Joey Gorirossi. Minutes later, a cross from Leslie found Gorirossi, who made a well-timed run to head the ball into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game winner. Ryken answered back with a late game goal to make the score 3-2, but the Mustangs' superb defense of Keeper John Leimbach and defenders Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, and Matt Cullen proved too tough for the Knights to come back. Jorden Howard also lent good defensive play in key points of the match, while C.J. Dorsey, Max Allegro, Dan Artin, Greg Carbott, Jeff Meekins, Andrew Degennaro, and Chris Martinette were strong on the attack and in the midfield to contribute to the victory. Our seniors -- C.J. Dorsey, Joey Gorirossi, and John Leimbach -- were honored in a halftime ceremony and post-game celebration. Mustangs fans were also treated to a halftime tug-of-war between the classes and alumni, ultimately won by the senior class! 2008 Alumni vs Varsity Soccer Match
The annual Bishop McNamara Alumni vs Varsity soccer match will take place on Saturday, September 25, at 9:00 a.m., at BMHS. Following the game, lunch will be served for Alumni and Varsity soccer players and their families. Each Varsity player is asked to bring a 12-pack of canned soda and has been assigned a food item to contribute to the lunch. Mustangs and Ireton Play to 2-2 Draw
The Mustangs and Bishop Ireton battled to a 2-2 tie. The Mustangs opened the scoring when Ryan Leslie's throw in found Joey Gorirossi open in the attacking third of the field. Gorirossi sent a sharp pass to Max Allegro who tallied the goal. Late in the half, Matt Michael sent a long ball to Dan Artin on the right wing. Artin fired a pass into the box where Gorirossi flicked it to Allegro who netted his second goal of the match. Ireton re-grouped at halftime and came back to knot the score at 2-2. Strikers Matt Malecki and Andrew Degennaro assisted on the attack, while Greg Carbott, Matt Cullen, and Gorirossi controlled the action in the center of the field throughout the match. Chris Martinette, C.J. Dorsey, Kyle Lauermann, Leslie, and Artin played strong in the outside mid positions. Mustangs Defeat Archbishop Carroll
The Mustangs defeated Archbishop Carroll 2-1 in an exciting match. Carroll scored in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead at the half. The Mustangs pressed hard on the attack in the 2nd half. Matt Michael's free kick in the 64th minute set up the tying goal when the ball found Joey Gorirossi just outside the box. Gorirossi slotted a good pass to Daniel Artin, who powered in the shot to knot the score at 1-1. In the 73rd minute, Gorirossi was fouled in the box and netted the resulting penalty kick to put the Mustangs up 2-1. The Mustangs tough defense led by Mayowa Alli, Jeff Meekins, Michael, and Keeper John Leimbach kept Carroll at bay in the remaining 7 minutes of play to seal the victory. Ryan Leslie, Max Allegro, Greg Carbott, Andrew DeGennaro, Matt Malecki, Matt Cullen, and Chris Martinette played a phenominal game in the midfield and on the attack. Mustangs Tie St. John's
In a soaking rain, the Mustangs played to a 2-2 first half tie against St. John's. The Mustangs struck first when a perfect pass from Ryan Leslie found Max Allegro in front of the net, who slotted a good shot past the SJC keeper. SJC answered back with two quick goals of their own. But in the final minute of the first half, Leslie sent a corner kick into the box that the SJC keeper mishandled; Allegro was there to grab the loose ball and tally his second goal of the match. Joey Gorirossi, Matt Michael, Greg Carbott, Chris Martinette, and Dan Artin controlled the match in the midfield with great ball handling and passing. Strikers Andrew DeGennaro and Matt Malecki were also strong on the attack. In the second half, both defenses played tough to keep the tie from being broken. Jeff Meekins, Mayowa Alli, and Matt Cullen each made key plays to hold SJC scoreless in the half, while Keeper John Leimbach made some great saves to earn the tie.
Mustangs Lose Close Match to Bishop O'Connell
O'Connell went up 1-0 in the first half of the match. But the Mustangs knotted the score at 1-1 midway through the second half when Joey Gorirossi served a great ball, placing it near the goal line, where Max Allegro buried into the back of the net for the score. O'Connell answered back with a late game break-away for a 2-1 win. Mustangs Go 1-1 in Holy Cross Invitational
The Mustangs traveled to Akron, Ohio, over Labor Day weekend to compete in the Holy Cross Invitational sponsored by Archbishop Hoban High School. The Mustangs dropped their first match to St. Edward's High School (ranked #1 in the state of Ohio), but the team quickly regrouped and came back to defeat Holy Trinity High School from Chicago, Illinois. In the win, Greg Carbott drilled a shot from the top of the box to give the Mustangs a 1-0 first half lead. In the second half, an exceptional passing combination led to Ryan Leslie hitting a superb left-footed shot into the back of the next off of a well-timed pass from Matt Michael to put the Mustangs up 2-0. Joey Gorirossi, Dan Artin, Andrew DeGennaro, Max Allegro, Chris Martinette, and Kyle Martin were also tough on the attack. Keeper John Leimbach earned the shut out with some big saves, supported by a great defensive effort throughout the match from Jeff Meekins, Mayowa Alli, and Jorden Howard. Kyle Lauermann, C.J. Dorsey, and Keith Payne were strong late in the match on defense and in the midfield to seal the victory. Mustangs Drop Hard Fought Match to Our Lady of Good Counsel
These two evenly matched rivals fought to a 0-0 tie at the half, but Good Counsel took a 1-0 lead at the start of the 2nd half. The Mustangs answered back, pressing hard on the attack, which resulted in Max Allegro drawing a foul in the box. Joey Gorirossi netted the PK to tie the score at 1-1. Despite strong efforts from the whole Mustang squad, Good Counsel scored the go-ahead goal on a late-game break away to win the match. Wednesday, August 27
Mustangs Open with a Tie
The Mustangs played to a 1-1 draw vs Archbishop Carroll to kick off the 2008 season. Max Allegro netted the Mustangs’ goal off of a great through ball from Joey Gorirossi, who received a crisp pass from Matt Malecki to set up the score. Greg Carbott, Dan Artin, Ryan Leslie, and Matt Cullen were also strong on the attack throughout the match. Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, and Ryan Anderson played exceptional defense against the fast and physical Carroll offense. When Anderson was injured late in the first half, Jeff Meekins stepped in to lend tough support to the defensive line. Keeper John Leimbach was superb between the pipes, making some fantastic saves. Kyle Martin, Andrew DeGennaro, and Kyle Lauermann contributed excellent second half play to help ensure the tie for the Mustangs. |
