Birmingham Junior Lacrosse Introduction
Since 1989, the Birmingham Junior Lacrosse program has helped young players learn basic skills necessary to carry them into higher levels of lacrosse. The first group of players began while in middle school and then went on to become the first Birmingham High School team. The Junior Lacrosse Program expanded under the leadership of Ethan Frank. The 5th and 6th grades began in 1995 and the 3rd and 4th grades were added in 1997. Birmingham Junior Lacrosse, with about 120 players, is now the largest lacrosse program in the state of Michigan.
Many former Birmingham Junior Lacrosse players have been quite successful in lacrosse. Several high school and college All-Americans began the sport in this program, and many of the key players of Birmingham’s 2002 High School State Championship team began as Birmingham Junior Lacrosse players. The Birmingham teams are fortunate to have dedicated parent volunteers and the expertise of an experienced paid coaching staff made up of former high school and college players.
The 3rd and 4th grade players practice five days a week in the spring, learning the basic skills of the game. They usually scrimmage amongst themselves and may play a few games against other teams.
The 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade players make a larger commitment to the sport as they prepare themselves to play in high school. They practice five days a week for three months and play a schedule of about 15 games. They also participate in tournamnets such as the Greater Cincinnati Lacrosse Festival, the Waverly Lacrosse Tournament, and the Cranbrook Lacrosse Jamboree.
In the fall of 2008, an offseason skills enhancement program was initiated. Under the guidance of experienced coaches, players of all ages and skill level practice the fundamentals to help them excel as a player and teammate.
The Birmingham Junior Lacrosse program has a rich history and an even brighter future.
