13 MVLA Players Selected into 3 Cal-North State ODP Teams/7 From Avalanche
The MVLA Soccer Club placed 13 athletes on three Cal-North State ODP Teams after two weekends of very competitive tryouts in Morgan Hill and Ripon. The Avalanche Team placed the largest number of athletes from one club team into the '93 Cal-North State ODP Team. Kelly Jarvis, Geena Graumann, Erin Robinson, Sandra Ley, Abby Dahlkemper and Kelsey Foo all made the '93 Team, while Christina "Boo" Garrido made the '92 Team. The MVLA Storm goalies Heather Rouhier made the '93 Team and Morgan Nichols made the '92 Team. The U12 MVLA Lightening Team placed four girls on the '95 State Team; they are Mariel "Mimi" Akaogi, Hannah Reed, Jacquelyn Walker-Caginia, and Caitlyn Wong. Two Avalanche players (Saylor Gibbs and Rachel Wimmer) were invited to tryout for the '93 Team, but are sidelined due to injuries. We wish them a fast recovery! Congratulations to everyone!

Avalanche Win Abronzino League

The MVLA Avalanche Team endured a season riddled with injuries to win the 2007 CYSA District 2 Abronzino League today after winning their final two league games 3-1 over the Burlingame Flames, and 6-0 over the SCC Breakers. The Avalanche team finished with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses, scoring 32 goals while only allowing 4 into their net. Two teams tied for second place; the DeAnza Force and Burlingame Flames.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches, and good luck during the high school season.

10 Players Selected to Cal-North State ODP Tryout Pool
Ten Avalanche Team members were named to the Cal-North State ODP player pool today and will tryout this December in Morgan Hill for the State ODP Team. MVLA is either the only, or certainly one of the very few teams in Northern California sending 10 players from one club team to attend the tryouts. Congratulations go out to the following players: Kelly Jarvis, Geena Graumann, Rachel Wimmer, Saylor Gibbs, Erin Robinson, Katie Crum, Kristina "Boo" Garrido, Sandra Ley, Abby Dahlkemper, and Kelsey Foo. Tryouts are held December 1-2, and 8-9 in Morgan Hill. Good luck to all the players :-)

MVLA Trio Called-Up to InterRegional ODP Camp in Florida
Avalanche players, Abby Dahlkemper, Sandra Ley and Kelsey Foo were called-up to participate in the Regional ODP Training Camp in Coral Springs, Flordia from November 17th-24th. The four Regional ODP Teams in the US are sending players to train and compete over Thanksgiving as part of the on-going player selection process for the U15 Girls National Team. The three MVLA athletes are members of the 24 players in the Region IV ODP Team, and U15 National Team player pool. Dahlkemper was invited to participate in the National Team Camp/Nike Friendlies Tournament last week in Los Angeles at the Home Depot Center, but has been sidelined with an injury the past three weeks and could not attend. Ley and Foo were invited to join the Sereno Girls U16 Team (coached by the Region IV ODP Coach) to play against the U14 GNT in Los Angeles. Ley played right defense for Sereno and repeatedly shut-down attacks from the US Team, while Foo held the center mid position and scored the second goal for Sereno on a quick counterattack after defending a US corner kick.

QuarterFinalist@SoCal Blues Cup - Survive With 11 Players
The Avalanche Team showed incredible determination last weekend by finishing as QuarterFinalists at the 2007 SoCal Blues Cup Tournament with only 10 healthy field players and 2 keepers. Unfortunately, the day before the tournament, one player came down with the flu but she soldiered on to help the already strapped team. MVLA had to survive triple-digit temperatures in San Juan Capistrano without any substituitions all weekend. They won their opening bracket game 1-0 against Placer United Prestige 93 Gold on Saturday morning, later returning to play a very physical battle against CRSC Infinity from SoCal. MVLA narrowly lost to the Inifinity Team at Surf Cup last year, and knew CRSC would play a tough game. The AVs played with one substitue player and fought the entire game in hot SoCal heat. CRSC was served three yellow cards during the game. MVLA's winning goal came from a bending free kick into CRSC's goal with 10 minutes left in the game.

Sunday morning, the AVs, down to 11 players (two were goalies), had to face the powerhouse Arsenal team (eventual tournament champions). MVLA was undergunned with 11 tired players, and could not keep Arsenal out of their goal, nor really mount an attack. Arsenal eventually won 0-2, and went on to win the tournament. MVLA lost to WestCoast Futbol FC 0-1; again a very tired Avalanche Team that "had no game" with 11 exhausted players in near 100 degree temperatures.

Congratulations girls for an incredible job considering the tough bracket play, short roster, and 100 degree temperatures. Great effort girls!

Avalanche Win SBTB Tournament
The MVLA Avalanche were invited to participate in the 2007 Soccer By-the-Bay Tournament last weekend, and ended-up winning the U15 Girls title Sunday afternoon. The team competed in the U15 Girls Gold Division and won their three bracket games (Mission Wildcats 4-2, Manteca Futbol 4-0 and Dublin Legends 3-0), before they won a tight game against the OV Sting 2-1 in the championship match. The Avalanche are preparing to compete in the SoCal Blues Cup over Labor Day Weekend in San Juan Capistrano. After the Blues Cup Tournament, they will take a break from their non-stop soccer schedule to rest before the Fall Season starts.

Avalanche Finish as Quarter Finalists in Surf Cup
The MVLA Avalanche broke through bracket play this weekend at the 2007 Surf Cup Tournament, only to fall to Emerald City of Washington in a penalty kick shootout during their Quarter Final match.

MVLA lost their first game to San Diego Surf on Saturday, July 28th. In a great back-and-forth, toughly played game, Surf was able to capitalize on one of a few scoring opportunities to net the only goal of the game. The game was a clash of styles with MVLA's methodical, possession style, building the attack while Surf's approach was a faster, over the top, long balls. MVLA was able to create more scoring opportunities, but just could not find the back of the Surf net. Surf played a very aggressive game, receiving seven yellow cards during the match.

The Avalanche bounced back in the afternoon and defeated FC Portland 5-0; the team scored a flurry of three goals within 15 minutes of the first half. Sunday morning, MVLA faced the Pride Predators of Colorado. The Pride Predators (2006-07 Colorado State Cup Champs) knocked Avalanche out in the Quarter Finals of the 2007 Far West Regionals in Las Vegas last month. MVLA paid Pride back by knocking them out of Surf Cup (winning 2-1) and advancing to the quarterfinals. MVLA dominated the game and were ahead 2-0 until the final five minutes of the game when the Pride converted a corner kick from their 5'11" forward.

The victory set-up a Quarter Final game between MVLA and Emerald City (2x Washington State Cup Champs and 2006 FarWest Regional Champs). The Avalanche lost two players to injuries in the game against the Pride, and had to face Emerald City without the service of three players. Both teams came-out fighting and each had minimal scoring opportunities; the game was a real battle in the midfield. After an hour of regulation play, the game was quickly decided in PKs in which MVLA fell short.

Surf Cup was the first chance the "new" 2007-08 roster could play together because many girls were out with ODP commitments. Considering the Avalanche is integrating four new players into the team, and they had to compete "out-of-the gate" against State and Regional Championship teams (Surf, Pride Predators, Emerald City) last weekend; the team is looking strong early in the season. MVLA scored 7 goals and gave-up 2 in four games. The team proved they can compete against anybody.

Three players depart for the US National Team Camp tomorrow, then the team will regroup and compete at the Mustang Tournament the second week of August.

Avalanche Welcome Four New Teammates
The Avalanche Team bolstered their 2007-08 squad with the addition of four new teammates as they prepare to kick-off their tournament season this month. Joining MVLA from the DeAnza Force Blue team are: Kelly Jarvis, Kristina "Boo" Garrido, and Stephanie Sorg. Stephanie Busch from the SCC Breakers Team; a guest player at Surf Cup with the Avalanche last year also joined the State Champions.

3 Players Named to US National Team Player Pool
Three members of the MVLA Avalanche Team were selected to attend the Under 14 Girls US National Team Camp in Pomona, CA., after being named to the Regional ODP Team in Moscow, Idaho today. Abby Dahlkemper, Sandra Ley and Kelsey Foo will attend the National Team Camp after the Surf Cup Tournment at the end of July. Special recognition needs to go out to defender Saylor Gibbs, who made the Regional Team pool, then suffered a mild concussion during the second week of tryouts. Saylor broke her nose during State Cup back in March, and has been carefully nursing her injury through the Far West Regional Tournament, and 10-days of Regional Camp. Recognition also needs to go-out to Erin Robinson who was chosen twice from the Cal-North State ODP Team to attend the Regional Camp.

About 200 State ODP players from 13 states attended the Western Regional Camp from July 2nd-6th. At the conclusion of that week, 36 players were chosen for the Regional Team player pool, of which, MVLA placed four of the seven Cal-North athletes. In an amazing show of strength, 21 of the 36 players chosen for the Regional Team came from Cal-North and Cal-South.

The girls are excited to rejoin their MVLA teammates and prepare for the Surf Cup Tournament at the end of July.

Four Players Selected to 2007 Girls '93 Region IV ODP Team
Five Avalanche players traveled to Moscow, Idaho last Sunday to attend the ODP Regional Camp, and four players were selected to the Girls'93 2007 Region IV ODP Team today. Three of the four girls chosen were named to last year's Regional Team. About 200 State ODP players from 13 States competed and trained at the University of Idaho this week. The players will remain in Idaho another week and train with the Regional Team before returning home. The Avalanche Team has two '92 State ODP players leaving on Sunday to start their camp tryouts. Good luck to the '92ers and Congratulations to all the '93ers!

Avalanche Finish as Quarter Finalist at Far West Regionals
The MVLA Avalanche team finished their run as Quarter Finalists at the 2007 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships. More than 250 boys and girls US Youth Soccer State Cup Championship teams from 14 state associations were competing for the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships in Las Vegas last week.

The Avalanche(Cal-North State Cup Champs) lost their Quarter Final game 0-2, in a hard-fought physical battle against the Pride Predators (Colorado State Cup Champs) yesterday at the 2007 US Youth Soccer FarWest Regionals tournament in Las Vegas. Both teams came-out attacking from the start creating multiple scoring opportunities the first-half. MVLA hit the Colorado State Champs goal frame a few times, and Colorado was most dangerous with the corner kicks due to their 5'10" forward. At the start of the second half, the Avalanche nearly scored at the whistle when a shot hit the far right post and dribbled on the goal line until the Pride goalie could grab the rolling ball. The Pride scored their first goal from 35-40yd shot, and got their second goal on a header near the end of the game. Both teams played their hearts-out and left nothing on the field. They will face each other next month in bracket play at the Surf Cup Tournament in San Diego.

Avalanche Defeat Alaska Champs & Head to Quarter Finals
The Avalanche Team defeated the Alaska State Champs yesterday by a score of 3-0, and secured a spot in the Western Regional Quarter Finals. MVLA scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game against Alaska and were able to reserve energy by rotating in players in the 103 degree Las Vegas heat. The team won two games and lost one during bracket play the first three days of competition. MVLA will compete against the Pride Predators/Colorado State Champions on Thursday at 7am. Sixteen State Champions arrived in Las Vegas on Sunday to compete in the Western Regional tournament; the winner will travel to Texas and compete in the US National Championships in late July.

Avalanche Win/Lose First Two Games at Regionals
The MVLA Avalanche dropped their first game against on Monday 6/18 against the NW National Rayos from Washington 0-1, then came back today and defeated ESUFC Chelsea from Oregon 4-0. Monday's game against Washington started at 10am - the weather in Las Vegas was in the mid 80s and there was a slight breeze. The Avalanche took control of the game from the start and dominated ball posession but did a poor job finishing their scoring opportunities. MVLA probably had 12-15 scoring opportunities but just could not put the ball in the back of the Washington net. The Rayos only had a few scoring opporunities on MVLA, but converted a corner kick late in the 2nd half to take the lead. MVLA peppered the Washington goal the last ten minutes of the game and lost the opening game. Today, MVLA came-out and put two goals in the back of the Oregon State Champions net in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Avalanche scored two more goals in the 2nd half and got their scoring mojo back. Tomorrow, MVLA will play the Alaska State Champions at 11:30am - it's going to be HOT!

Avalanche in Video Shoot with Brandi Chastain
The MVLA Avalanche received a nice treat Thursday May 17th when they took part in a filming of a new video which aims to help globalize the coaching world of soccer thru different cultures, techniques, tactics, styles and fun of the game. They have already filmed the likes of Lionel Messi, Paolo Maldini, Chelsea and their manager Maurinho. They spent time in Argentina with River, Boca as well as in Brasil. They also filmed the LA Galaxy in practice.

Brandi Chastain was approached by Insidesoccer.com to show what is happening in women's soccer - so Brandi invited not only the MVLA Avalanche but also the U11 MVLA Lightning, U15 MVLA Strom, U16 and U17 MVLA Mercury for the shoot.

As to Brandi's reasoning for choosing the MVLA girls "..I love your passion, I love your players skill, and I know they love soccer on a greater level than just the average fan. What these players will have a chance to do is showcase their skills to the world, and have the world say, these American (better yet, Northern Californian) girls can really play the game. I think it is a once in a lifetime opportunity!"

Keep an eye out for the video at www.insidesoccer.com The site hasn't launched yet but you can be one of the first members if you register now.

MVLA Avalanche win the U14G California State Cup
MVLA Avalanche won 2-1 over DeAnza Force in an exciting well played game to win the U14 Girls State Cup Championship. The first half was back and forth, both teams probing, and searching for opportunities. In a game that could have gone either way, MVLA scored first on a volley off a corner kick in the second half. DeAnza countered with a great goal, attacking MVLA's left side and scoring on a well placed kick to the far post. With 10 minutes to go, MVLA was able to counter with a quick switch of the ball to DeAnza's left side and a rocket shot to the far post. MVLA held on to win 2-1. MVLA won 7 games during the tournament, scoring 29 goals while only allowing 3 into their own net. Congratulations to all the players and coaches! The team will compete in the Far West Regionals this coming June in Las Vegas.
