MVLA Avalanche Backgrounder

The MVLA Avalanche soccer team has won 2 consecutive Cal-North State Championships, 4 consecutive District 2 Cup titles, a District League Championship, and multiple soccer tournaments. We are currently playing in the U17 age group with a roster consisting of talented 1992 and 1993 players graduating in 2010 and 2011 - almost all desire to play soccer at the collegiate level. Virtually all of our players have been involved in ODP at some level; we have players on the Cal-North State ODP, Region IV ODP and the US National Team.

2007-2008 State Cup Champions & 2008 FarWest Regional Semi-Finalists
2007 was a breakout year for the Avalanche as they won the Cal-North State Cup title (U15), finished as Quarterfinalists at FarWest Regionals, Surf Cup and the So Cal Blues Cup. MVLA won the competitive Abronzino League Championship in Northern California. GotSoccer.com ranks the team #2 in the US, #2 in Region IV and #1 in Northern California.  In 2008, the team won their second consecutive Cal-North State Cup Championship (U15), and finished as Semi-Finalists at the 2008 FarWest Regionals. US Youth Soccer profiled the team in May 2008 article.

2009-2010 College Showcase Tournaments
MVLA Avalanche is regularly accepted to the top tournaments where college age players are recruited. In 2009, the team plans to compete in the Las Vegas College Showcase, Surf Cup, College Surf Cup, and the Pleasanton Rage College Showcase tournaments.

Tryouts
We do not hold formal tryouts, rather, we encourage interested players to join the team for a series of practices where the coaches can evaluate players, and prospective players can see if they can fit into the team atmosphere. Team Staff

Erin Montoya In addition to coaching Avalanche, she is also the head coach of the Los Altos High School Varsity Girls Soccer team (2007 CCS Champions) and also the MVLA Lightning (2007 & 2009 State Cup Champions). Prior to that Erin, was a standout player at Santa Clara University, and a former professional player (WUSA) with both the San Diego Spirit and San Jose Cyberrays. Albertin Montoya Is also the head coach of the FC Gold Pride Womens Pro Team, and an Assistant Coach at Stanford University. Albertin ws also previously an assistant coach at Santa Clara University and led the MVLA Mercury Team to three consecutive State Cup Championships. He was a college Hermann Trophy finalist at Santa Clara University, part of the Men's Olympic Team, and a first round draft pick by the San Jose Clash.

Chris Sorg is our goal keeper coach and has been playing soccer in the Bay Area; at DeAnza College and 3 years at San Jose State University where he was captain his senior year and also received MVP honors. The following year he became Assistant Coach at San Jose State.
