Ardmore's Gavin Calder honored by state's sports writers

Paul Beaudry/The Birmingham News, October 03, 2011 6:42 p.m. BIRMINGHAM, Alabama

-- After a 40-carry, 276-yard game the previous week, Ardmore’s Gavin Calder took things easy on Friday night. Of course, easy is subjective as Calder came through with a five-touchdown, 338-yard rushing night in a 47-40 win over Priceville.

For grins, he also threw a 79-yard halfback pass for a touchdown to go with his scoring runs of 4, 37, 15, 21 and 24 yards. For his effort, Calder was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Offensive Player of the Week.

The NICU is very special to me and my wife as our now 17 month old daughter spent the first 52 days of her life there. We are so grateful for the nurses and doctors that made our stay as comforting as it could be in such a stressful time. We are excited about the opportunity to give back to such a great group of people.

Prep football: Tigers working to build on last season

By Ashley Hargrove Graves

— ARDMORE—

Shannon Brown is optimistic about what's on the verge of happening at Ardmore.

Since taking over the Tiger football team three seasons ago, he's been working to restore the program back to what it once was in the late 1950s and early '60s when they had four unbeaten seasons. Last year certainly proved to be a step in the right direction.

After starting the year 0-4, Ardmore won four straight, falling just short of earning a postseason appearance. Now, Brown and his players are using that as a stepping stone as they prepare for the 2011 season.

"The most important thing is we need to build on the positive things we were able to accomplish last year," Brown said. "Definitely drilling off four games in a row was huge for us after starting 0-4. That says a lot about the integrity of the boys and their work ethic, and I've seen that carry on into the offseason, as well as this summer."

Gone are the productive duo of J. Tribble and Matt Teeples who led the Tigers' offense a year ago. Battling to replace Tribble at quarterback are Tyler Scoggins and Garett Miller. Gavin Calder is expected to carry a lot of the Tigers load offensively. Hunter Pack and Matt Edwards return on the offensive line.

Daniel McNeese and Jacob Petritsch are the Tigers two returning players on defense.

"We don't have a whole lot of returning starters, but we have a lot of guys coming back who had significant playing time," Brown said. "So we're looking forward to building on that and trying to continue the process of building the program back. It's going to take time, and it's going to take patience, but I do like the way the work ethic and the commitment of the community are trying to chance that perception of Ardmore football."

While Brown's process may still be an upward battle, he feels things are moving the right way. "We're still climbing the hill, but we're not sliding down it," he said. "There's still going to be bumps in the road. Our numbers are low, but they're low because we have guys that want to be in the program, those that have made that sacrifice and commitment. That's what it’s all about. That's what we need for us to continue to go forward and grow and get this program to where it can be."

Ardmore opens the season Friday at Elkmont.

Gavin
Gavin Calder: Ardmore's choice for Iron Man by Michael Cummings

article from "The Decatur Daily"  page F2

"If Ardmore High's Gavin Calder didn't play football, he knows how he would make up for it.

The sport would be hockey, but like Calder said, it would be a lot like playing football on ice.

When he is playing football, Calder is a standout runing back for the Tigers.

One of his best memories from last season is scoring the winning touchdown in a victory over Brooks.

Calder spoke with "Decatur Daily" sports writer Michael Cummings after a recent practice.

Here's what he said:

Q:  What was your best games last season?

A:  The Wilson game.  I had about four 20 yard runs, a 50 yard touchdown reception, and the last touchdown to win it.

Q:  What does it mean to you to be your team's Ironman?

A:  It means a lot to me because I've worked hard to get there.  But I know I'm not there yet.  And it's not just me.  My lineman put me where I am.  And I still need to work harder to get where I need to be.

Q:  What was your off-season workout?

A:  Monday and Wednesday we'd work out, then run 110s, 40s, and something we call "Super Gasers."  You sprint to the 50 (yard line) down and back three times, and you have to make it in 55 seconds.  Tuesday and Thursday we'd work out and then work on speed and agility.

Q:  What did you do in addition to that?

A:  At home I do pushups and situps, and I have a gym membership.  And I also do footwork at home.

Q:  What is your favorite workout, and how much weight can you lift?

A:  Squats.  I do 380 lbs on one rep. max.

Q.  Who are some other Ironmen on your team?

A:   I'd have to say Hunter Pack.  He's our left guard.  He's one of the main reasons I'm here.  Jacob Petritsch and Cody Bigony - they're my two fullbacks.  They open up holes for me.  And I'd have to say Jack Blair, one of our receivers, and Tyler Scoggins at quarterback.

Q:  You play offense and defense.  Which do you like better;

A:  Offense because of getting the touchdowns.  The scoring.

Q:  Which other sport would you like to play?

A:  I'm going to play baseball this year.  I used to play basketball and soccer to get in shape for football.  But if I had to try one, I'd have to say hockey.  It looks pretty cool checking somebody into the wall.  It would be like playing football, except on ice.

Q.  What other positions would you like to try?

A.  I'd like to try quarterback if I could, but I know I couldn't remember all that.  I don't see how they do it.

Gavin
Ardmore puts emphasis on community By Michael Cummings Decatur Daily 8/11/2011
ARDMORE — When he talks about Ardmore High, head coach Shannon Brown uses phrases like “our town” and “our team” and “our program.”

When he talks about the future, he points to glory days 50 years past.

And when he talks about nearly anything, Brown also preaches his favorite virtue.

“We’ve got good kids here, and this is a good town,” Brown said. “We can win here, and we will win here, but we’ve got to be  patient. We’ve got to build the program from the ground up.”

In the building department, the 2010 season should qualify as a success. Ardmore went 4-6, quadrupling its 2009 win total and missing a playoff berth by just one game.

After startin...g 0-4, the Tigers reeled off four straight wins to get back into the Class 4A, Region 8 playoff race. During that run, they averaged more than 27 points per contest.

The momentum stopped with season-ending losses to Central-Florence and Tanner, but Brown said the four-game winning streak could serve as a jumping-off points for this year’s team.

“I think, without question, that was a turning point for our kids,” he said. “It was good for them to be a part of something like that.”

Brown is hoping that momentum will carry into this season. The ultimate goal, he said, is a return to the program’s glory days of the late 1950s and early ’60s, when the program had four unbeaten seasons.

But to get there, Brown called on the community to “take ownership” in the program.

“This is our school and our town, and we’ve all got to get involved,” he said. “This is not my team. It’s not Shannon Brown’s team. It’s our team.”

The team will have to replace the offensive production of quarterback J. Tribble and receiver Matt Teeples, a duo who led the Tigers’ offense to an average of 22.2. points a game.

Senior Tyler Scoggins and freshman Garett Miller are competing to replace J. Tribble at quarterback, while senior Gavin Calder is expected to continue his production at running back.

Calder will have three returning starters blocking for him in Hunter Pack, Matt Edwards and Colin Wray. If Calder’s words are an indication, the team is buying into the community theme.

“Hunter Pack, he’s our left guard, he’s one of the main reasons I’m here,” Calder said. “And Jacob Petritsch and Cody Biggomy — they’re my two fullbacks. They open up the holes for me.”

The defense returns two starters in linebacker Daniel McNeese and Petritsch, who also plays defensive line and linebacker. Despite his team’s low numbers — the roster has 38 total players — Brown pointed to its quality.

“We want quality numbers. We want guys who are committed to the program,” he said. “So these 38 are the guys who want to be here.”

Ardmore opens the season at Elkmont on Aug. 26 and will compete in Region 8 with Deshler, Central-Florence, West Limestone, Brooks, Wilson, East Lawrence and Priceville.

The Tigers are looking for their first winning season and playoff berth since 2006, when they went 8-3.

“The goal every year is to make the postseason. But is it realistic? I think yes, this year more so than last,” Brown said. “We’re finally getting that mentality to play 10 games to get to the postseason. We’ve got to get rid of that old mentality that says we play 10 games, and if we win, we win, and if we lose, we lose.

“We’ve got to hate losing. And when I say, ‘We,’ I mean everybody. Me, the players and the town.”
