Pastime beats Nemesis to get to semifinals

This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Sunday, August 5, 2007.

LANCASTER - Refusing to quit.
Both the American Pastime and the Nemesis played the game of their lives in a thrilling 10-inning game at Lancaster City Park in the 18-and-under Western National Championships on Saturday.
With a spot in the semifinals on the line, both teams got timely hits, but it was the Pastime who came out with a 12-10 win.
Going into the top of the sixth inning the Nemesis held a comfortable 4-0 lead, but Sarah Velasquez came up with a two-out single, and Brianna Marcantoni followed with a bomb over the left field fence to cut the lead to 4-2.
"I was just thinking we need to get some runs," Marcantoni said.
The Pastime's defense held for the bottom half of the inning, and it was faced with its last chance to push the game into extra innings.
Three singles from Kayla Uphold, Lissa Ishihara, and Nicole Trancoso loaded the bases with one out for Emily McCormick who also singled to drive in a run.
Kacie Rapshus was hit in the elbow to score another run and tie it at 4.
With the bases loaded and still only one out, it was the perfect situation for cleanup hitter, Sarah Velasquez.
Calm and cool as she stepped into the box, Velasquez waited for a pitch she could drive, and crushed the ball of the fence in left-center for a grand slam, which put the Pastime up, 8-4.
"I just had to relax and see the ball," Velasquez said. "I knew it as soon as I hit it. I got all of that pitch."
The Nemesis worked its way out of the inning without further damage.
After recording a quick first out, Ashley Zika hit a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 8-5. Pastime pitcher Courtney Thomsen rebounded to strike out Brandi Gaxiola to put her team within one out of the win.
Singles from Cecilia Orozco, Jessica Gonzalez, and Ginger Martinez, a walk to Amber Angel and two throwing errors resulted in three more runs for the Nemesis to knot the game yet again.
The Pastime got a ground ball to end the inning, but its lead was gone and the game was sent into extra innings. Playing under the international tiebreaker rule, with a runner on second base to start each inning.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth and and ninth innings to make the score 10-10 going into the 10th inning.
The Nemesis recorded the first out in Jennifer Tellez, but the pitcher, Martinez, had a throwing error on a routine groundball that scored a run for the Pastime.
With two outs Emily McCormick and Kacie Rapshus each singled with Rapshus's hit giving the Pastime a two-run advantage.
Down by two in the bottom of the tenth, Erika Espino led off with a bloop single to right field. Martinez rounded third, but Tellez threw a bullet to home and Kathy Cortez applied the tag for the out.
The tag was disputed both by Martinez and the coaches, who said there was no tag, but the call stayed. Uphold, who came into the game to pitch for the Pastime in the 10th, then got a fly ball and a strikeout to end the wild game.
The Nemesis took a early 3-0 in the third inning on two throwing errors from Pastime that turned Martinez's single into an inside-the-park home run.
Angel added a solo shot in the fourth to take the 4-0 lead.
The Pastime moved into the semifinal match that was scheduled to start immediately after their game. The extra innings gave their opponents, the Power Surge a good rest and the advantage going into the game.
Today's championship game will be played on Field 2 at noon.

Southern Section

The CIF was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1914 by a group of area school principals. It was founded in order to standardize rules and team structures between schools; it was also intended to prevent abuses such as "school shopping" by athletes and teams fielding players over high school age. Other school principals voluntarily entered into the program, and by 1917, the organization was established statewide.
