ISLAND LAKE - The generosity brought the grateful mother to tears.
Without counting the second-place prize money, a representative from the Broken Oar volleyball team walked over to Claire Fair and made a donation to the Amanda Fair Memorial Fund.
"It's for a good cause," said Jon Morgan, an Island Lake resident and Broken Oar spokesman.
Claire Fair accepted the gesture from the individual she previously did not know and immediately wiped tears from her eyes at the end of the fourth annual Amanda Fair Volleyball Classic.
Saturday's event attracted 14 four-player teams at Sideouts Bar and Lounge in Island Lake and raised $400 for local charities.
"This will help people remember," DuWayne Fair said of his late daughter.
The "A" Team, comprised of Aby Farris, Hillary Foreman, Kaitlyn Hendle and Kacie Wikierak, won the under-17 title, while the Rally Monkeys (Jennifer Koeser, Jim Finn, Kevin Fennell and Carl Pycz) claimed the 18-and-over division, beating Broken Oar in the final.
Amanda Fair died May 14, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Main Street in Crystal Lake.
Her sister, Amie Fair Retz, had just earned a degree from Beloit College, and the family held a graduation party the day before. Amie also was in the car during the accident.
"It was the happiest of Sundays and worst of Mondays," DuWayne Fair said.
A former standout volleyball player at McHenry High School, Amanda Fair recently had completed her freshman year at McHenry County College. A true student/athlete, the 19-year-old played volleyball and earned a place on the school's President's List.
"She loved volleyball," said Claire Fair, Amanda's mother.
Along with the volleyball classic, a spaghetti dinner is planned for Aug. 14 at the McHenry Moose Lodge No. 691. The proceeds from the events go to the Amanda Fair Memorial Fund, which benefits needy young adults from the area.
"This way we get to celebrate her life," said Amie Fair Retz, who also played volleyball at McHenry. Her team went 1-4 Saturday.
"We just came out to have a good time," she said.
Said DuWayne Fair: "We have very many friends in the community. [The memorials] help turn a negative into a positive. You think you're alone in your grief. You're not.
"We will hold the volleyball classics for as long as people remember and will come out and participate."
