| Go Allied Gardens! Baseball has such great memories. One of my best players was a 12 year old pitcher I had back in the 1980's who would take a miniature 'GI Joe' action figure to the mound and place it next to his feet when he pitched (for good luck I suppose--we did win a title that year). But the weird part is that the other teams just laughed. Nobody ever complained about the toy. Have a terrific season! Best regards from Rick Fishman, author of Sandlot Summit, the funniest youth baseball story ever. |

| In 1967 through 1971, I played in the Allied Gardens "American" Little League. In the majors, I played on the Tigers in 1970 and 1971 and was on the 1971 All Star Team. There were so many kids in our Little League that the league was divided up into the National League and American League. My father, Glen Paape was the "Field Director" for a number of years for the American League. He would spend countless hours manicuring the grass; painting the concession stand, bleachers and dugouts. He built a significant portion of the "new" lower field with a number of other dads. He also built numerous bat and helmet racks which were used for years. My dad and I went to the San Diego Stadium Turf farm (then on the side of San Diego Stadium)and brought a significant amount of sod to the American League field. One of the newspapers took a picture of the "American" League field and wrote an article about the excellent condition of the field. Needless to say, I am very happy to see that my old stomping grounds received a very nice face lift. Kudos to the Padres for helping the Allied Gardens Little League fields look so nice again. The Chargers and/or the Padres gave our league sod some 40 years ago. Today is my father's 85th birthday. He died two years ago. I can only hope your kids have the same wonderful experience I did so many years ago. Jeff Paape |
