Our 2011-2012 season is about to begin!  There is a MANDATORY pre-season on Sunday, October 30, 2001 at 3:00 pm at the Albany County Hockey Facility.

Who we are


The Albany Cougars Special Hockey Club provides an amateur athletic hockey program for youths and adults with developmental disabilities. The program is open to girls and boys and men and women who are physically able but are ineligible or unable to participate in an existing organized hockey program due to developmental disability.

Our goal is to enhance players' motor skills, social skills, and confidence in addition to learning how to play hockey. Newcomers don't have to be able to skate. Our volunteer coaching staff will be happy to teach anybody how to; skating skills grow during practice.

Practice takes place once a week, usually on a Sunday afternoon, at the Albany County Hockey Facility (see our schedule below). Our team is about more than just hockey. We offer exercise, social interaction, and most importantly, FUN! We host our own tournament, and we travel to tournaments hosted by other special hockey clubs as well, giving our participants a total team experience.

“Achievement, friendship, team building, and caring – all these words describe the Cougars. My son has played for the team for over five years. He came to the Cougars as a non-skater with an intense interest in hockey. With the team's support, he has evolved into a kid who can skate and who sees himself as a hockey player. Membership on the team is a great source of pride to him. There is a lot more to hockey than just skating and shooting. As our players evolve, they continue to learn valuable skills such as taking turns getting off and on the ice, passing to and helping other players and interacting with other teams. I am very grateful for the Cougars. Our involvement has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have had as a family.”

Our club is a member of USA Hockey and Special Hockey International.
