The Rocketmen face Arrowhead (D2) at 5:30 PM on MONDAY, July 27th.

McCormick Ranch 10/11's Advance to Semi-Final Round at State Tournament

McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) was the 4th seed in Pool A and was playing the home team from Nogales National Little League, the #1 seed in Pool B.  Trailing 4-1 in the top of the 5th, MRLL scored 3 runs to tie the game up and 3 more in the top of the 6th to win 7-4.

MRLL next plays Gilbert American from District 14 at 8:00 PM on Monday, July 27th.  The 2 teams played earlier in the tournament and MRLL won 11-1.  However, that was then and this is now and we all know how difficult it is to beat a good team twice in one tournament.

Canyon Del Oro (D5) and Arrowhead (D2) face off in the other semi-final game.  Interestingly, all 4 semifinalists happen to be from Pool A.

9/10 at Queen Creek McCormick Ranch MRLL played Superstition National (District 14) tonight in a big must win game.  SNLL jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top half of the first.  MRLL exploded with hit after hit...topped with a grand slam in the bottom of the 1st to take an 8-1 lead.  SNLL fought back and added 7 on MRLL in the top of the second to tie the game up 8-8.  In the 3rd inning SNLL scored another run to take an 9-8 lead, only to see MRLL score 3 in the 4th to go ahead for good 11-9.  MRLL hung for their 4th win in pool play, and they finished with a 4-2 record.  MRLL assured themselves of at least a tie for 2nd in pool play and await the outcome of the Prescott Valley (D10) – Paradise Valley North (D3) game Tuesday night (07/28/09) to see if they advance to the state semi-finals on Wednesday. A Prescott Valley victory and MRLL will advance. TBD

Little League at Peoria; Rio Vista Park North Scottsdale Rocketmen lost 13-2 to Arrowhead (D2) in what turns out to be a seeding game.  The Rocketmen played a very subdued game last night while setting up the pitching staff for the bracket run.  NSLL finished pool play with a 3-3 record and the 4th seed in Pool B.  Their next opponent is Pool A’s #1 seed, Yuma (District 9).Win and you play tomorrow, lose and you go home. 9/10 at Queen Creek McCormick Ranch MRLL finished pool play with a 4-2 record, and tied for 2nd place.  But PV North finished 4-2 (1 of those victories was over MRLL) too tonight in pool play with a victory over Prescott Valley.  Only the top two teams of a 7 team pool advance to the State semi finals, and PV North's victory gives them the nod to the semi finals based on a runs allowed and defensive innings ratio.  McCormick Ranch came so close and finished Districts & State with a 9-3 record...something to very proud of. ------
Little League at Peoria; Rio Vista Park North Scottsdale

The Rocketmen season came to an end last night with a 2-0 loss to Yuma.  As the score indicates it was a great pitching duel.  The Rocketmen started the game off with a lead-off walk but could do no more damage in the first inning.  Yuma was held scoreless through the first three innings and then scored 2 in the bottom of the 4th.  The Rocketmen got a man to third in the top of the 5th but could not get him in.  The Rocket men then got a man on in the 6th and brought the tying run to the plate but just could not punch through the Yuma pitching and defense.

I could not be more proud of the boys and the coaching staff.  It was a great run and a great way to spend a summer that I am sure no one will soon forget.  The team handled themselves with class and dignity beyond their years!

MVLL kept rolling by beating the Host Laguna Niguel 14-9 in 7-innings.  MVLL again used a 3-inning explosion to score 6 runs after trailing 4 - 2.  MVLL had 12 hits and 3 home runs -- Dylan Cozens, Cody Erickson, and Michael Salazar.

A win on Saturday vs Alaska will Secure a #1 seed on Monday.  Coach Erickson has worked his pitching well and will have everyone ready to go.  Everyone on the team is contributing with solid defense, hitting and pitching.

Peter Fletcher and Colton Mills combined on a 2-hitter as Mountain View bounced back from yesterday's heartbreaking loss to defeat the Idaho State Champions from Post Falls, 4-0.  Idaho threatened only once, but Fletcher, Mills and solid play by the MVLL defense throttled the Post Falls offense all night.  Nick DeRegis hit a 2-run double and Skylar Smith plated DeRegis in the first to give Fletcher and Mills all the run support they would need.
DeRegis scored again in the 4th after doubling into the ivy-lined left center field wall, and Adam Bloom went 2-2 to pace the nine hit MVLL offense.  The Arizona Champs now await the results of Saturday and Sunday pool play games that will determine Monday night's semi-finalists from Pool B

Western Region Junior (13-14) Baseball: Mountain View in Championship Final

Mountain View beat Southern California's Montalvo LL team 13-3 in 7-innings in their Semi-Final.  MVLL used solid pitching from Dylan Cozens, and solid defense and timely hitting.  MVLL had three timely home runs from Grant Martinez, Cody Erickson, and Dylan Cozens.  MVLL battled SoCal through 4 innings, hanging on to a 4 - 2 lead.  By the middle of the 6th, that lead had swelled to 10 - 2.   However, SoCal had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 6th but came away with just 1 run. MVLL answered back with 3 more runs in the top of the 7th to make the final score 13-3.  MVLL secured the game with Ryan Riggs and Lucas Jacobi closing out on the mound.

Mountain View will face Hawaii's Hilo American/National LL, who earlier beat Washington's Yakima National LL 12-2 in their Semi-Final.  The winner will travel on Friday to Taylor, Michigan to play in the Junior Little League World Series.

Will MVLL have the pitching to challenge Hawaii and  win the Western Regional Junior Little League Championship?  Stay tuned...

The final is at 6:30 on Tuesday, August 11th.

Western Region Junior (13-14) Baseball: Mountain View Wins Championship!!!!
2009 MVLL 13-14s Western Region Champs
2009 Western Region Junior Baseball Champions

Mountain View beat Hawaii's Hilo American/National LL 3-0 to win the Western Region Championship.  MVLL now moves on to the Junior Little League World Series in Taylor, Michigan.  MVLL will join 11 of the best teams in the world to pursue a World Championship.  MVLL is only the second Arizona team to make it to Junior Little League World Series, the first from District 6, and the first from Phoenix.

MVLL locked down Hawaii and held them to only 2 hits.  Grant Martinez pitched 5 scoreless innings and kept Hawaii's power hitters off balance and guessing.  Cody Erickson closed the game out with power and awesome control to claim MVLL's first Western Regional Championship.  MVLL scored on Luc Trotta's stand up double and aggressive base running from both Lucas Jacobi and Ryan Riggs.  MVLL capitalized on two miscues by Hawaii to move runners around and score.  With the score 1-0, MVLL added two more runs with RBI's from Grant Martinez and Michael Salazar.  MVLL's defense was solid and every position was played with confidence and anticipation.   Key defensive plays by Jimmy DeTroia, and Zach Janikis kept potential scoring rallies from Hawaii empty.
This victory was a complete team effort, regardless who was at bat or at what position, MVLL was going to make it happen.  This game by far demonstrated a complete team effort.  Manager Erickson and Coaches Trotta and DiTroia have done a great job in keeping the kids loose, focused and determined.  Steve Erickson said it best, "This is a special team, with a common goal."  MVLL went 18 - 0 during this run.
MVLL was cheered by not only family and friends from Arizona, but by the home league and district.  MVLL was complimented by how well the kids maintained composure, discipline, and demonstrated class on and off the field.  MVLL will now leave on Friday night to Taylor, Michigan to represent the West.  The will start play on Monday, Aug 17th vs USA Central (team still to be determined).  MVLL will play 4-games in pool play with the top 2 USA teams facing off to play the International Champ.  Updates, and web casting of the games will be available through http://www.littleleague.org/series/2009divisions/jlbb/series.htm  web site.

9/10's District Baseball: McCormick Ranch & McDowell Mountain Move On in Winners' Bracket

In what only seemed like a marathon of baseball, the 4 games tonight were all completed just prior to the 11:00 PM curfew.

In the four previous years of District 6's 9/10 Baseball Tournament, McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) has won the title 3 times and are the defending champions.  The only other winner at this tournament was McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) in 2007.  As a result, it should not come as shock to anyone that these two teams are the two remaining undefeated teams.  They will play on Wednesday, June 24 at 5:30 PM. MRLL defeated Arcadia Little League (ARLL) 14-9 while MMLL defeated East Scottsdale Little League (ESLL) 24-11.

In the meantime, Fountain Hills Little League (FHLL) and Mountain View Little League (MVLL) staved off elimination with victories over South Scottsdale Little League and Desert Foothills Little League, respectively. On Tuesday, June 23rd MVLL will play ESLL at 5:30 PM and FHLL will now face ARLL at 7:30 PM.

Wednesday, June 24

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) beat East Scottsdale Little League (ESLL) 11-1 in Tuesday evenings first elimination game.  In the second elimination game, Arcadia Little League (ARLL) beat Fountain Hills Little League (FHLL) 20-3.  This sets up a rematch of Saturday night's contest of MVLL vs. ARLL which ARLL won.  They will play on Wednesday, June 24 at 7:30 PM.

The early game at 5:30 PM will pit the 2 undefeated teams McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) and McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL)

MRLL moves on to the championship game on Saturday, June 27 at 5:30 PM.  MMLL will play the winner of last night's second game, Mountain View Little League (MVLL).

The second game of the night featured a rematch of Saturday night's  MVLL - Arcadia Little League (ARLL) game.  On Saturday, ARLL beat MVLL 13-3.  This time, MVLL repaid the favor by the exact same score and eliminated ARLL.  MMLL will now play MVLL at 7:30 tonight.

9/10's District Baseball: Mountain View Reaches Championship Game

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) is nothing if not resilient.  MVLL lost their first game and dropped into the elimination bracket.  All they have done since then is win.  Last night, they won for the fourth time in a row. MVLL defeated McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) 17-7. As the victor, MVLL will play McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) in the District 6 Championship Game on Saturday, June 27, night at 5:30 PM.

It should be noted that as this is a double-elimination tournament,  MVLL would need to beat MRLL twice to win the Championship.

9/10's STATE Baseball: McCormick Ranch Off to Tough Start in Opening Game
McCormick Ranch started their quest for a state title facing a formidable team in RRLL (Rio Rico LL).  It was a game that featured two strong throwing pitchers on both sides with Rio Rico scratching across a run in the third to go up 1-0.  Rio Rico added a few more runs to make it 3-1, but the bats were silent for McCormick Ranch in their Pool Play opener.  Rio Rico continued to play solid defense and added 3 more runs in the 5th to trip up McCormick Ranch 6-1.  McCormick Ranch now faces the District 4 champion tomorrow, Saturday, night at 5:30 pm for their second game of pool play.
The tournament bracket and results are being posted at the District 14 web site.

9/10s STATE Baseball: Bulls Get Back on Track
In Game two of pool play, the McCormick Ranch Bulls righted the ship, but started out slow again.  CGLL (Casa Grande LL) jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with McCormick Ranch getting one back in the bottom of the inning.  With the bats silent for McCormick Ranch, Casa Grande added 2 in the 3rd to stretch their lead to 5-1.  McCormick Ranch scratched across one more run in the bottom of the 4th to draw it to 5-2 for Casa Grande.  In the bottom of the 5th inning the McCormick Ranch bats woke up and added several key hits to score 6 runs to take their first lead of the tournament 8-5.  McCormick Ranch struck out 4 of CGLL's last 5 batters to close out the game and get their first win.  McCormick Ranch will now play Prescott Valley LL (District 10) Tuesday at 5:30 pm.

10/11's District Baseball Tournament Underway

Tonight, at Golden Eagle Park in beautiful Fountain Hills, District 6's 10/11's Baseball tournament got underway.  This year we have 5 teams competing for the District Championship (click on the headline above to download a bracket) .  In the past 3-years, Mountain View (MVLL) and Arcadia (ARLL) have been the only 2 leagues competing for the crown with Arcadia winning the first and Mountain View winning the past two championships.

ARLL won its first game tonight versus East Scottsdale (ESLL).  However, MVLL lost to a determined McCormick Ranch (MRLL) team which had at least 6 players who won the district's 2008 9/10 tournament.

ARLL will play Fountain Hills (FHLL), who had a first game bye, Wednesday, June 24th at 5:30 PM.  Later that evening at 7:30 PM, MVLL will play ESLL in an elimination game.

Thursday, June 25
10/11's District Baseball: Arcadia & Mountain View Triumph

10/11's District Baseball: McCormick Ranch Reaches Championship Game While Arcadia and Fountain Hills to Determine their Opponent

In an elimination bracket game, Fountain Hills Little League (FHLL) beat Mountain View Little League (MVLL) 3-1. FHLL will now play ARLL on Friday night, June 26th at 7:00 PM.  The winner will then play in the 10/11 Saturday night championship match against MRLL (5:30 PM).

As this is a double elimination tournament, a victory by MRLL in that game will give them the district title.  A victory by FHLL will give each team one loss and the "rubbber match" will occur 30-minutes after the first game ends.

10/11s District Baseball: McCormick Ranch Wins Championship in "If" Game

Coming out of the elimination bracket, Fountain Hills Little League (FHLL)   was not given much of a chance against the more rested McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) .  However, FHLL showed its determination and why the games have to be played on the field. Despite giving up the tying run with 2-outs in the top of the 6th, FHLL  emerged victorious in a thrilling 7-inning affair 6-5 in the first game of the championship Saturday, June 27th.  With each team having 1-loss in this double-elimination tournament, the "if"game was played 30-minutes after the first game ended.

This time, MRLL  reversed the tables and beat FHLL 14-2 and won its first 10/11s District Baseball Championship.

11/12's District Baseball: Desert Foothills and North Scottsdale Remain Unbeaten

Desert Foothills remained unbeaten in Pool A by edging McDowell Mountain (MMLL) 2-1.  MMLL's record fell to 0-2.  North Scottsdale (NSLL) was the only other unbeaten team as it improved its record to 2-0 in Pool B.  NSLL beat East Scottsdale (ESLL) as ESLL's record fell to 1-1.

Mountain View (MVLL) and Arcadia (ARLL) reversed their respective directions as MVLL beat ARLL.  They both now have 1-1 records. McCormick Ranch (MRLL) improved its record to 1-1 by beating Fountain Hills 6-3.

Thursday, July 2
11/12's Baseball District: 4 Teams Advance to Playoff Round

Desert Foothills (DFLL), McCormick Ranch (MRLL), McDowell Mountain (MMLL), and North Scottsdale (NSLL) advanced to the playoff round. The teams will return to action on Monday, July 6th at 5:30 PM (bracket can be downloaded by clicking on the headline above).

Coming in to the night's play, DFLL and NSLL were assured of advancing regardless of the outcome of their respective games. Both achieved 3-0 records in pool play with DFLL beating Arcadia (ARLL) 4-2 and NSLL beating Fountain Hills 11-10.

MRLL and MMLL both needed victories last night to make it out of pool play. MRLL had their destiny in their own hands as the victor in their game versus East Scottsdale was going to advance. MRLL won 10-0.

MMLL not only needed to win to advance, which it did with a 7-4 win over Mountain View (MVLL), but they needed some help from DFLL.  With the DFLL win over ARLL, there were three teams with identical win-loss records of 1-2; ARLL, MMLL, and MVLL. In such ties, head-to-head record is the first tie-breaker.  However, none of the 3-teams had beaten the other two teams.  The next tie-breaker is runs allowed ratio. This ratio is calculated by dividing the number runs a team allowed to score by the number of defensive innings it played.  MMLL's 1.200 runs allowed ratio was the lowest of the 3-teams thus allowing them to advance.

DFLL will play MRLL at 5:30 PM and NSLL will play MMLL at 7:30 on Monday, July 6th.

Hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th of July!

Tuesday, July 7
11/12's Baseball District: Desert Foothills & North Scottsdale Both Ring Up 12 on Way to Different Victories

The early game featured Desert Foothills (DFLL) and McCormick Ranch (MRLL).  MRLL jumped out to an early lead and ultimately scored their 10th run in the top of the 5th inning to take a 10-0 lead over DFLL.  MRLL was dominating and with one out in the bottom of the 5th, MRLL's lead was still 10-0 and things were looking bleak for DFLL.  Then in one of those turn-arounds that makes Little League special, DFLL went on to score 12 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning which was capped by a grand-slam home run.  The final score was DFLL 12 and MRLL 10.  DFLL leads their best of 3 semi-final series 1-0.

The late game had McDowell Mountain (MMLL) and North Scottsdale (NSLL) meeting up in the other semi-final series.  NSLL jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning and never looked back.  NSLL went on to win 12-1 in a 4-inning game.  NSLL leads their best of 3 semi-final series 1-0.

NSLL will play MMLL at 5:30 PM and DFLL will play MRLL at 7:30 on Tuesday, July 7th.

Wednesday, July 8
11/12's Baseball District: Desert Foothills & North Scottsdale Both Remain Undefeated & Will Square Off in Finals

Last year McDowell Mountain (MMLL) eliminated North Scottsdale (NSLL) in the semi-final round.  This year, NSLL returned the favor and eliminated MMLL with a 13-0 victory.

In the other semi-final match-up, Desert Foothills (DFLL) beat McCormick Ranch (MRLL) 6-4 to advance to the championship round.

Both DFLL and NSLL have reached this year's finals without losing a game along the way with each team winning 5 games.  From a historical standpoint, NSLL has won more District 6 championships than any other league -- 7 championships --and has won 5 in the last 10 years.  DFLL has won the championship once in its relatively short history (10-years) but can you guess which team it beat???  Yes, they defeated NSLL in 2003.

The two teams will face-off in game 1 tonight, July 8th, at 7:30 PM at Scottsdale Ranch Park.

Thursday, July 9
11/12's Baseball District: North Scottsdale Wins Game 1 of Championship Series

North Scottsdale (NSLL) extended their winning streak to 6 games with a 5-0 victory over Desert Foothills (DFLL).  DFLL's record fell to 5-1.  More significantly, NSLL is just one win away from the district title.  For DFLL, it is "win or go home" time. The two teams play next on Thursday, July 9th at 7:30 PM at Scottsdale Ranch Park.  Should DFLL tie up the best 2 out of 3 final series, the rubber match will be Friday, July 10th at 7:30 PM.

Friday, July 10
11/12's Baseball District: North Scottsdale Wins 8th District Championship
NSLL Rocket Man

North Scottsdale (NSLL) Rocketmen used a different formula in the championship game but came away with the same result - another win!  NSLL fell behind to a determined Desert Foothills (DFLL) team 2-0, but NSLL methodically scored 7-runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead 7-2.  However, this was the same DFLL team that earlier in the week, during semi-final play, was down to its last 2 outs and trailed 10-0 before scoring 12-runs in one inning to win the game. In this game, DFLL scored 2 in the top of the 5th to shrink the NSLL lead to 7-4.  In the top of the 6th, DFLL scored yet another run to make the score 7-5 and DFLL still had the bases loaded.  The Rocketmen, which went a perfect 7-0 during this tournament, would not let this one slip away and extinguished the DFLL comeback and hopes.

NSLL won its 8th District 6 Little League Championship -- all since 1993.  It was their 6th in the last 11 years.  The Rocketmen will represent D6 at the State Tournament that will be held in Peoria starting on July 20th.

MVLL BEATS NO. CALIF IN ELIMINATION POOL PLAY GAME TO ADVANCE TO SEMI FINALS

Keaton Boysen and Cody Erickson combined on a 5 hitter, and the MVLL offense erupted for 5 runs on 6 hits in the 2nd inning as MVLL defeated Union City (Northern Calif) Little League 6 - 4.  The win ran MVLL's record in pool play to 3-1, earning them a spot in the Western Regional Semi-finals on Monday (08/09/2010) night.  Game time is 7 PM.

Boysen (5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 HBP) and Erickson (2 IP, 0 ER, O H, 1 BB, 2 K) kept the Union City offense in check for most of the day.  In the 2nd inning, Erickson and Jimmy Ditroia started the inning with singles, then a RBI double by Joey Mandros, a 2-run single by Michael Salazar, an RBI triple by Keaton Boysen, and a RBI Double by Dylan Cozens gave MVLL a early 5 - 0 lead.  Erickson's RBI single in the 5th finished the scoring for MVLL.

Western Region Baseball (San Bernardino, CA): North Scottsdale Advances to Semi-Final Play
Rocketmen 2010

North Scottsdale may have lost the battle but still intends to win the war.  The Rocketmen lost tonight to Hawaii 7-0 but as a result of the "run allowed ratio" tie breaker, they became the 4th seed and Hawaii became the 1st seed.  The two teams will, therefore, play again on Friday at 8:00 PM in one of the Western Region semi-final matches. Northern and Southern California will play in the other semi-final game.

Going forward, pool play records and runs allowed no longer apply.  It is now a win or go home tournament. The team that wins 2 games advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.

Western Region Baseball (San Bernardino, CA): Hawaiians' Bats Blast Rocketmen 12-2 and End Their Journey
Blurred ball seen hit out of orbit

North Scottsdale Little League (NSLL) Rocketmen's season finally came to an end.  However, it is not likely that those involved with the team directly or indirectly will soon forget their run and their accomplishments.

First, there was their perfect 7-0 record in Arizona District 6 play.  Second, was their perfect 5-0 record at the section/state tournament.  Third, it became the first team in NSLL's history to make it to the Western Region Semi-Final game.  Yes, just 2 wins away from Williamsport and the World Series.  Now, there may be some who will focus on what they did not achieve and what they could have/should have done.  However, those who have been on this road know how difficult it is to accomplish what they did.  So, I sit back and applaud them and revel in their success knowing all the well that the pain of disappoint will subside and the feel of success will endure.

I would like to point out two other successes that may have gone unnoticed by many and I contend were more important than those I listed above.  The first involved a Challenger game at San Bernardino the night before the tournament started.  There was the NSLL players jumping on the field without an adult's request to get involved and doing so with the joy and kindness that is often missing at such high pressured tournaments.  The second was their behavior during this last game in which they fell behind 6-0 in the first inning.  While, other teams might have hung their heads and sulked, the Rocketmen went about their business of competing (this was mentioned often during the ESPN2 telecast) until the final out and "high-fiving" their opponents as the Hawaiians crushed 5 home runs.  The latter example of sportsmanship was not missed by the ESPN2 telecast crew as it is unfortunately a rarity in sports today.

Rocketmen, you did your league, district, and state proud.  Congratulations to the players, coaches, parents, and NSLL's President and board!
