9/10s Baseball -- State (Casa Grande): McCormick Ranch Little League Wins First State Tournament Game

McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) picked up exactly where they left off at the District 6 tournament on June 28th.  They scored 6 runs in the top of the 1st inning and led District 7's Four Peaks Little League (FPLL) 6-0 after 1-inning.

FPLL then clawed their way back in to the game and reduced the MRLL lead to just 6-5 after 4 innings.  It appeared that FPLL had all the momentum.  It was time for a MRLL patented explosion of runs.  In the top of the 5th inning, MRLL scored 10 runs and went on to win 16-5 in a 5 inning mercy rule shortened game.

MRLL will face District 13's Chandler National North Little League tomorrow at 6:00 PM.

Updated information will be available at www.eteamz.active.com/casagrandell

Thursday, July 17
9/10s Baseball -- State (Casa Grande): McCormick Ranch Little League Loses in Extra Innings

In a see-saw battle McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) lost 10-9 in 7 innings to District 13's Chandler National North Little League (CNNLL).  CNNLL led 4-0 only to have MRLL come back with a 5-run inning to take the lead.  CNNLL tied the game at 5.  That is where the score stood until MRLL scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning.  CNNLL was not dissuaded and scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to claim the victory.

MRLL now moves down to the elimination part of the bracket -- that is "win or go home."  Their next game is Friday, July 18th at 7:00 PM.

Updated information will be available at www.eteamz.active.com/casagrandell

Friday, July 18
9/10s Baseball -- State (Casa Grande): McCormick Ranch Little League Loses Second Straight in Extra Innings

In another see-saw battle McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) lost another heart breaker in the bottom of the 7th inning.  This time District 12's Pantano Little League (PLL) was the culprit.   PLL won by a 7-6 score.  This being MRLL's second loss, their storied season has come to an end.  Clearly the two consecutive 1-run losses in extra innings indicate how easily things could have been different.  MRLL represented District 6 well and we are likely to hear more from this group of players in the years to come.  Congratulations!!!

Arcadia Little League Takes First Game of 10/11s Baseball Tournament

The Arizona District VI 10/11 baseball tournament is a best 2 out of 3 affair with Arcadia Little League (ARLL) playing Mountain View Little League (MVLL).  ARLL, playing at home, won tonight 9-2 to take a 1-0 series lead.

The tournament now switches venues to MVLL's home, Scottsdale Ranch Park.  The next game is tomorrow night (Thursday, June 26th) at 5:30.  IF ARLL wins they will be our champion.  If MVLL were to win, the series would be extended to a third and deciding game.  The championship would be decided in a second game tomorrow night -- approximately 30-minutes after the first game.

Little League (11/12s) Baseball - McCormick Ranch and Mountain View Remain Undefeated

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) and McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) are the two remaining undefeated teams in the tournament.  MVLL is in first place in Pool A while MRLL is in the same position in Pool B.

Tomorrow night's games are the final ones in Pool Play.  They will decide who the four teams that will advance to semi-final play on Monday, July 7th.

Thursday, July 3
Little League (11/12s) Baseball - Semi-Finals Set for Monday 07/07/08

McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) remained undefeated (3-0) and took the number one seed in Pool B.  MRLL cruised through the bracket outscoring its opponents 43-4.  McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) took the second seed in Pool B with a 2-1 record.

Pool A's standings were not finalized until the final out of the North Scottsdale Little League (NSLL) and Mountain View Little League (MVLL)  game. With Desert Foothills Little League's (DFLL) win in the early game and NSLL's victory in the late game, there was a 3-way tie for first place.

The first tie-breaker in this situation (where none of the 3 teams who were tied beat the other two) is the runs allowed ratio.  Using this method, once the the first team is determined the remaining two teams break their tie based upon their head-to-head contest.

NSLL needed to win by 4 runs to achieve the lowest runs allowed ratio and to advance to the semi-finals. NSLL needed a two out hit in the top of the 6th inning to score the decisive fourth run and then held on to its 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

NSLL will now play MMLL at 5:00 PM while MVLL will play MRLL at 7:30 PM on Monday, July 7th.

Monday, July 7
Little League (11/12s) Baseball -- Red Pool Teams Just Too Tough For Blue Pool

McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) and McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) finished 1-2 in Pool B or the RED Pool.  North Scottsdale Little League (NSLL) and Mountain View Little League (MVLL) finished in the same positions in Pool A or the BLUE pool.  In tonight's first games of the best 2 out of 3 semi-finals, the RED pool teams won by sizeable margins:

MMLL 14 -- NSLL  2

MRLL 9 -- MVLL 1

The same match-ups will occur tomorrow (Tuesday, July 8th) night as MRLL and MMLL will attempt to wrap on their respective series and move on the finals.

Tuesday, July 8
Little League (11/12s) Baseball -- McCormick Ranch Advances to Finals; North Scottsdale Evens Its Series

MRLL must await the winner of the semi-final series between North Scottsdale Little League (NSLL) and McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL). NSLL evened the semi-final series at 1-game apiece with a 13-2 victory.  Their series concludes at 7:00 PM (please note this time change) tomorrow night (Wednesday, July 9th).

Wednesday, July 9

McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) beat North Scottsdale Little League (NSLL) 3-2 in the rubber game of their 3-game semi-final series.  MMLL will now play McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) in a best 2 out of 3 Championship series for the District 6 title.  The first game is Thursday, July 10th at 7:30 PM at Scottsdale Ranch Park.

One historical note:  this is the first time in McDowell Mountain Little League's history that they will be playing for the Championship at the 11/12 year old level.

Little League (11/12s) Baseball -- "Make thee an ark of gopher wood"
McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) and McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) began their game at the scheduled 7:30 time.  But, then the rains came.  The game was suspended in the top of the second inning with MRLL at bat and leading 7-0.  The game will resume exactly at the point that we left off.  It will resume at 5:30 PM Friday, July 11th.  Once it is completed, the regularly scheduled game will be played approximately 30-minutes after the completion of the resumed game.

Friday, July 11
Little League (11/12s) Baseball -- McCormick Ranch Takes Title from Determined McDowell Mountain

McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) and McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) completed the previous night's game that was suspended due to rain with MRLL winning 10-0 in 4 innings.

The second game of the evening was a much tighter affair.  MMLL jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  MRLL fought back to take a 5-2 lead over the next several innings.  However, just as some started to believe that MRLL might win the game and the championship, that persevering group from MMLL scored 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning to tie the game at 5.  For the first time in the tournament, MRLL was being challenged in the late innings.  Fans started to wonder how would they respond to this challenge.  MRLL answered the question very quickly in the bottom of the 5th as the inning's lead-off better belted a solo homer. MRLL added two more runs and the score now stood at 8-5 after 5 complete innings. MMLL was not done, however, as they scored a 6th run and had the tieing run at second base in the top of the 6th inning.  The final score was 8-6 in favor of MRLL

MMLL accomplished their best showing at the District Tournament as the runner-up. MRLL went undefeated with a 7-0 record outscoring its opponents 84-18.  This was MRLL's 5th District Championship (previous titles were in 1997, 1998, 2000, & 2004)*.

*Only North Scottsdale Little League has more district titles with 7.

McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) faced District 13's Ahwatukee Little League (ALL) in game 1 of the state tournament.  After giving up a grand slam in the bottom of the first, they found themselves in an unusual position -- down 4 runs.  Despite this deficit and the ever powerful ALL team, MRLL never let their heads drop.  Instead they used the long ball to their advantage.  MRLL hit 5 home runs of their own -- 3 by players who never had hit a home run -- on the way to a 12-5 victory.

MRLL will face District 4's Maricopa Little League (MLL) at 1:00 PM tomorrow (Thursday, July 17th).   MLL won their first game 5-0 versus District 11's Mt. Graham Little League.

Little League (11/12s) Baseball -- State (Flagstaff): McCormick Ranch Suffers First Loss of Their Tournament Season

After winning their first 10 games (7 at the district level and 3 at the state level) the McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) Bulls tasted defeat at the hands of District 12's Randolph Little League (RLL).  RLL came in to the game with a record of 1-2 but had defeated District 13's Ahwatukee Little League the previous morning.

MRLL jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first only to see RLL score 5-runs in the bottom of the inning.  Playing catch-up the rest of the game, the Bulls narrowed the RLL lead to 6-4, but that was the closest it would become.  The final score was 8-5.

UNOFFICIAL STANDINGS  for Pool B through Saturday, July 19th (not including runs allowed ratio):

Little League (11/12s) Baseball -- State (Flagstaff): McCormick Ranch Uses Familiar Winning Formula

After losing their first game on Saturday, McCormick Ranch Little League (MRLL) Bulls went back to a formula that had been very successful for them: long balls with outstanding fielding and pitching.  With several players hitting home runs and a complete game by Austin Love, the Bulls beat District 14's Desert Ridge Little League (DRLL) 9-1. MRLL's record now stands at 4-1.

MRLL's next game is Thursday, July 24th at 7:00 PM versus District 5's Canyon View Little League (CVLL).  At this time, CVLL is the only undefeated team in the pool but has only played 3 games.  CVLL must now play 3 consecutive days/nights.

At the moment, there are still MANY scenarios that would allow MRLL to move on to the playoff round.  The clearest one is for MRLL to defeat CVLL and become the number 1 seed.  Please stay tuned as we will see how it will all shake out.

Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League Pounds Tempe-Guadalupe

As had been chronicled at this web site, Mountain View Little League (MVLL) swept through the double-elimination District 6 tournament undefeated while outscoring its opponents 44-5. The road at the state tournament began much tougher as MVLL led by only a 1-0 score after 2 innings.  MVLL then erupted for 8 runs in the top of the 3rd inning keyed by an inside-the-park grand slam by Greg Hopkins.  This was more than enough runs for Keaton Boysen who pitched all 5 innings as MVLL went on to beat District 13's Tempe-Guadalupe 21-1.

MVLL will play a team from District 4 tomorrow (Thursday, July 17th) at 7:30 PM.  Tournament information can be obtained at www.azd7.com.

Thursday, July 17
Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League Edges Casa Grande 5-2

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) kept their record unblemished with a hard fought 5-2 victory over District 4's Casa Grande Little League (CGLL). MVLL scored a run in the bottom of the 1st and the score remained 1-0 until the 5th inning.  In the top of the 5th, CGLL tied the game at 1.  However, with renewed energy, MVLL scored 3 runs to take the lead 4-1.  MVLL added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 5-1.  CGLL was not quite done and added a run in the top of the 7th to make the final score 5-2.

Greg Hopkins pitched into the 5th inning giving up an unearned run.  Matt Lewis then came on to complete the 5th inning and pitched the 6th inning as well.  Colton Mills finished the game.

MVLL will play Mesa American Little League (MALL) from the host District 7 on Saturday, July 19th at 7:30 PM.

Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League Runs Record to 3-0
In a hard fought affair, Mountain View Little League (MVLL) beat the host Mesa American Little League (MALL) 6-3. Using 4 different pitchers (Ryan Riggs, Keaton Boysen, Cody Erickson, and Matt Lewis), MVLL kept the opponent’s score low until their offense kicked in.

MVLL will play District 5’s Coronado Little League (CLL) on Monday, July 21st at 6:00 PM at Autry Field #1.

Tournament information can be obtained at www.azd7.com.

Monday, July 21
Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League Remains Unbeaten in Rain-Shortened Game

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) ran their record to 4-0 by defeating District 5’s Coronado Little League (CLL) 7-2 in 5 innings.  The game was shortened by one of our typical Monsoon storms.

CLL jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one inning as MVLL had to adjust to CLL's slower paced pitcher. It remained that way until the top of the 3rd when MVLL exploded for 4-runs.  The big hit in that inning was Keaton Boysen's bases loaded clearing triple.  MVLL subsequently tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning and 2 more in the fifth. Colton Mills and Cody Erickson provided all that was needed on the bump.

As per the original schedule, MVLL is scheduled to play District 11’s Mt. Graham Little League (MGLL) on Tuesday, July 22nd at 8:00 PM at Autry Field #1. However, changes may be made to the schedule due to the rain.  Therefore, please check with the team to be sure that is still their schedule.

Tuesday, July 22
Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League Stays Unbeaten

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) ran their record to 5-0 with a 12-5 victory over District 11’s Mt. Graham Little League (MGLL).

MVLL jumped out to an early lead with 4 runs in the top of the first. Greg Hopkins and Cody Erickson contributed RBI’s. Michael Salazar started the game on the mound and was extremely sharp as he required only 5 pitches to get out of the first. The score remained 4-0 until the top of the third when MVLL struck for 2 runs. Matt Lewis singled and was tripled home by Greg Hopkins. Greg then scored on a balk. In the top of the 4th a Matt Lewis sacrifice fly and a Greg Hopkins 2-run double plated 3 more runs. After 4 innings, MVLL led 9-1. Michael Salazar pitched 4 innings giving up just 2 hits and no earned runs. With Adam Bloom now on the mound, MVLL ran into some defensive issues in the bottom of the 5th and gave up 4 unearned runs and the score was narrowed to 9-5. MVLL struck back with 3 runs to make it 12-5 in the top of the 6th. Getting key hits in the inning were Keaton Boysen, Greg Hopkins, Bryce Hammond, and Cody Erickson. Keaton Boysen came on to pitch in the bottom of the 6th inning and finished the game as MVLL won 12-5.

MVLL's next game is on Thursday, July 24th at 7:30 PM at Fitch Field #3 versus District 1’s Blue Ridge Little League (BRLL).  This is their final game of pool play.

Tournament information can be obtained at www.azd7.com

Thursday, July 24
Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League Completes Pool Play Undefeated

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) completed Pool Play undefeated (6-0) by beating District 1’s Blue Ridge Little League (BRLL) 11-1 in 6 innings. MVLL used a balanced offensive attack and 6 different pitchers in defeating BRLL.  Ryan Sandry, Colton Mills, Keaton Boysen, Cody Erickson, Stratton Williams and Greg Hopkins held D1 in check as MVLL kept pitchers eligible for its semi-final game. By virtue of its play in Pool Play, MVLL is the number 1 seed in Pool A.

MVLL's next game is a semi-final single elimination game on Saturday, July 26th at 8:00 AM (yes in the morning) at Gene Autry Field against District 3's High Desert, Pool B's second seed.  The other semifinal will match Pool B winner Douglas from District 8 vs. Pool A second seed Casa Grande from District 4.

Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- State (Mesa): Mountain View Little League recap

Here is a recount from one of coaches of what has transpired so far:

7/26/08
Whoa,

With the utmost in sportsmanship and humility, the MVLL Junior all stars completed an important milestone; they won the Arizona State Championship for Junior Division Little League baseball.  This is a first for MVLL at this level of play. This win earns them a birth in the regional tournament to be played in southern California beginning Tuesday 7/29/08 as the Arizona representative. With Just about 50 teams remaining in the hunt for Little League World Series Champions, anticipation and excitement are at a fever pitch.

Here is a quick recap of the road traveled so far.  Since all star selection in June, this team has had an evenly paced practice schedule and one scrimmage game.  The District 6 tournament featured four teams.  MVLL played only two of the three other teams due to scheduling of the double elimination bracket.  The team won three straight games to finish as district 6 champions in impressive fashion.  With one win over Fountain Hills LL and two wins over Arcadia LL, the Mountain View team put up an impressive offensive display, outscoring opponents 44-5.

Moving on to the state tournament was exciting for the players.  This was a chance to play 13 other District winners from around the state. The two pool format with full round robin allowed a fair assessment of all teams head to head.  Mountain View played 6 pool play games and was victorious in each.  They continued the impressive offensive run and outscored these 6 opponents 61-14.

Winners and runners up from each pool met for a day of elimination baseball, where the tough reality of competitive sports hits home -- loser goes home and only one of 4 very good teams advances.  Mountain View, with an historical hex of playing poorly in early morning games, committed to a very early work out on elimination day and won the semi final game 14-4 in five innings.  The final was played less than an hour later in very hot conditions, no surprise in Arizona.  Mountain View fell behind 5-0 in the top half of the first inning and things looked bleak.  But the pitcher and players persevered and ultimately whittled away the lead and took a three run lead of their own.  The teams traded runs late in the game with the final score 9-6.

The entire team contributed in important ways in each game.  Solid and deep pitching, steady defense, supported this terrific offense outscoring 11 opponents 128-29.  There are countless individual accomplishments which will not be detailed here, the team won this as a team and will continue the road to the regional tournament in California as a team.

Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- Western Region (Aliso Viejo): Mountain View Wins in Cliff Hanger

Greg Hopkins doubled home Bryce Hammond and Matt Lewis in the top of the 9th inning, and Ryan Sandry and Keaton Boysen pitched 6 scoreless innings in relief as Mountain View Little League (MVLL) defeated West Valley Little League of Eagle, Idaho by a score of 7-5.  Idaho scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning to erase Mountain View's early 3-0 lead before MVLL tied the game on RBI's by Lewis in the 5th and Ryan Sandry in the 6th to set up the extra inning dramatics.

Mountain View moved to 2-0 in pool play and set up a game against Hilo American/National LL of Hilo, Hawaii on Thursday, July 31st at 4pm.  Hawaii is Pool A's only other undefeated team.

Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- Western Region (Aliso Viejo): Mountain View Winning Streak Ends at 13.

The Mountain View Little League Junior All Stars had their 13 game postseason winning streak abruptly ended by Hawaii's Hilo American/National Little league, losing to the Islanders 11-0 in 5 innings.  Hawaii's offense was aided by uncharacteristic MVLL pitching and defense, as the defenders committed their first three errors of the tournament and the pitchers hit six batters and walked two.

Hawaii clinched the top spot in Pool A, while MVLL (2-1) needs a win over Alaska (1-2) in their final pool play game on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM to advance to Monday's semifinal round.

Juniors (13-14s) Baseball -- Western Region (Aliso Viejo): Mountain View's All Star Season Comes to an End

The Mountain View Little League (MVLL) Junior All Stars lost to Alaska 7-0.  With the loss, MVLL's record at the Western Region Baseball Tournament fell to 2-2 thus eliminating any chances for them to advance to the playoff round.

MVLL won their first 13-games (through District, State and the first 2 games of Regional play) and with the excitement of winning came increasingly high expectations. MVLL then lost their last two games. This kind of roller coaster ride with an abrupt ending often makes it easy for everyone involved to lose sight of all that this team accomplished. Sweeping through District 6 and then the Arizona State tournament are no small accomplishments.  They represented District 6 well at State and Regionals and we can all be proud of that!

Congratulations on a wonderful All Star run!!

Mountain View Little League (MVLL) faced the host District 2's Holiday Park Little League (HPLL) on Thursday night (July 17, 2008).  HPLL prevailed with a 7-6 victory dropping MVLL's record to 1-2.

If MVLL had any chance of continuing into the playoff round, they would need to beat the undefeated District 8's Nogales Little League (NLL) team (2-0 while outscoring its opponents 23-5 in those two games) tonight. Unfortunately, NLL came out ahead in another MVLL 1-run loss 5-4.

Congratulations to MVLL who despite their record were in every game and could just as easily have been 3-1.

Big League (16-18s) Baseball -- Western Region (Bremerton, WA): Congrats to Arizona District 6 As "Long-Run" Comes to an End

The Arizona District 6 Big League Baseball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Northern California's District 57 in the top of the first inning.  Unfortunately that would be their only run as NoCal  went on to win by a 3-1 score.

Some might consider it a short ride when you are eliminated after 2 games from a double-elimination tournament.  However, if one considers when this process actually started -- approximately 4 years ago -- and the commitment of the coaches and players, it was a long time in coming.  Congratulations on your "long run" and thank you for representing not only District 6 but all of Arizona so well!!
