Introduction to AYSO and AYSO Philosophies

The  American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is a nationwide non-profit organization that develops and delivers quality youth soccer programs in a fun, family environment based on AYSO’s five philosophies:

* Everyone Plays - Our program's goal is for kids to play soccer - so we mandate that each player on every team play at least half of every game.

* Open Registration - AYSO has sign-ups, not try-outs. Our program is open to all children between 4 and 19 years of age who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing.

* Balanced Teams - Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible—because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play.

* Positive Coaching - AYSO Believes in building soccer skills and self-worth through encouragement and teaching. Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players.

* Good Sportsmanship - AYSO has active programs to promote positive behavior on the field and on the sidelines.  We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.

There are currently over 650,000 players and 250,000 volunteers active in AYSO.

AYSO Structure

The AYSO's goal is "... to educate and develop young people by encouraging their interest and participation in soccer through its Everyone Plays, Open Registration, Balanced TeamsGood Sportsmanship and Positive Coaching concepts."

Headquartered in California, AYSO soccer is played across the United States.  There are approximately 10 paid positions at the National level, but all of the other individuals responsible for running the program across the country are VOLUNTEERS who are NOT paid for their time and effort.

The National Level of AYSO is subdivided into three categories:  Sections, Areas, and Regions.

The USA is divided into "Sections".  Michigan is part of Section 8.

Each Section is divided into "Areas".  New Lothrop is one of many mid-Michigan communities that belong to Area G, including Birch Run, Byron/Durand, Fenton/Linden, Holly/Davisburg, Montrose, Flushing, Carman Ainsworth, Swartz Creek, and Grand Blanc.

Each Area is comprised of individual communities or "Regions".  This is the local level of play within a small geographic area. Regions are the backbone of the entire AYSO organization. New Lothrop is Region 1155.  Each region has its own Board of Directors consisting of least the following positions:  Commissioner, Treasurer, Secretary, Safety Director, Coach Administrator, Registrar, Referee Administrator and Child & Volunteer Protection Advocate.  New Lothrop also has the following Board position:  Field Director.  All Board members are volunteers.  If you are interested in assisting with the management of our region, please contact Sharlene Timmons, the Regional Commissioner, or any Board member to learn how you can help!
