Important AYSO information to ensure FUN for your children:

*Players should arrive at least 15 minutes before their schedule game time. U-10 and U-12 team coaches may request that players arrive 30 minutes or more before game time.

*To ensure the safety of players and spectators:  parents and spectators should remain on the sidelines, at least 9 feet from the field of play, during the game. NO person is allowed to stand near or behind the goal area.

*Coaches, parents and spectators are not to argue with the referees during the game. If you have a dispute with a referee, discuss it with your coach. Your coach may approach the referee after the game. Referees are to be treated with respect at all times. Keep in mind that ALL referees are VOLUNTEERS. They do not get paid to give their time and effort to ensure that all the children have a fun soccer experience.

*Cheering for ALL players is encouraged. Negative remarks to ANY player is not allowed. All persons in attendance before, during and after games should set examples of GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP!

*Under 6 and Under 8 Divisions do not keep score. Each team is a winner!

*If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your coach or an AYSO Board Member.

Handout: Parent / Player Handbook

What kind of equipment does my child need?

Tennis shoes or soccer cleats are required at each practice and game.

Shinguards are required at each practice and game.  Shinguards must be covered by socks or long pants.

A ball is helpful, but not required.
  U-5, U-6, and U-8 teams use a size 3 ball.
  U-10 and U-12 teams use a size 4 ball.
U-14 and up use a size 5 ball.

Please send water with your child to each practice and game.

What's not allowed:
  Jewelry of any kind, anywhere
Hats/Visors (soft caps are allowed in cold weather)
  Sunglasses
  Casts
  Splints
Any hard objects on clothes, ie. pants or shirts with exposed zippers or other metal.
Jackets/Shirts with hoods  (refs may allow them in the younger divisions if they're securely worn on the player's head or tucked down under their jersey.)

When and where are practices?

U-5 and U-6 teams
have combination practice/game events.  There are no additional practices for players in these divisions.

U-8 and up:
Each coach will determine what is best for his/her team regarding practice location and time. The majority of practices are in the early evening hours, i.e. beginning at 5:00 or 6:00 pm, during the week.

No AYSO team will meet more than 3 times per week, total, for games and/or practices.

When and where are games?

AYSO has a minimum eight game season for each team.

U-5, U-6, and U-8 games are all played on the fields in front of the New Lothrop High School.  Games for these divisions are usually scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

U-10 games are played at the New Lothrop Elementary School and Flushing's Seymour Road Elementary School (see "Game Locations" for directions).  Approximately half of the games will be in New Lothrop.  Games are usually played on Saturdays, though there may be a weeknight or Sunday afternoon game occasionally.

U-12 games are played throughout the AYSO Area G, including Montrose, Birch Run, Flushing, Gaines/Durand, Carmen/Ainsworth, Grand Blanc, Swartz Creek, and Holly.  Approximately half the games will be in New Lothrop.  Games are usually played on Saturdays, though there may be a weeknight or Sunday afternoon game occasionally.

Do we play if it's raining?
Good question!

The general policy is that scheduled games are played, "rain or shine". Due to the fact that weather in Michigan can and does change quickly, games are not cancelled in advance.  Games are not canceled because of rain if the field is still in playable condition.
The only person authorized to cancel a game on the field is the referee scheduled for that game after (s)he personally inspects the field. Coaches cannot cancel the game, even by mutual consent. Games will be halted by the referee due to lightening or thunder (thunder means that there is lightening somewhere and lightening can 'reach' for miles).  All players and spectators should leave the field. The referee may ask that they remain in their vehicles if it looks possible that the game could be restarted in a reasonable time.

In the event of rain, teams should assume that games will be played, and proceed to the field. Games are automatically canceled if there is a tornado warning.

A wet or muddy field is not sufficient reason to cancel a game.  However, for the safety of the players, games may be cancelled by the Regional Commissioner or the referee due to unsafe field conditions, including ice, excessive mud, or standing water.

Are teams co-ed?

We always offer separate girls and boys teams for our U10 divisions.  Our U-5, U-6, and U-8 teams have historically been co-ed due to the small size of our region, but, with the increased the number of players in our region, we were able to offer separate boys and girls teams in most age divisions the last couple of years.  However, for the fall 2008 season, our U6 and U8 teams are co-ed again, primarily due to the fact that most players were not registered by the June 30th deadline.

New Lothrop offers U12 and U14 teams, though usually only in the spring.  We do offer a "Soccer for Teens" program in the fall for these players.  This co-ed group meets once a week for a 90 minute session consisting of skills/drills and a short-sided game.  Players must be registered for this pick-up league.  Registration is only $15 and will be deducted from any spring program fees.

This year, there is an interest in a spring U16 team.  Please call Sharlene Timmons for more information (810) 638-5572.

Please pre-register at www.eayso.org or call Sharlene at (810) 638-5572 if you're interested.

Why small-sided soccer?

Fewer players on the field means more opportunity to be in the action -- and to learn the game.   AYSO recommends that all children under the age of 12 play small-sided (less than 11 players per team) soccer.

Small-sided soccer is about what is best for young soccer players.

Remember, young soccer players need special consideration:

  * They are children playing a child’s game.
  * They must be regarded as young children, not mini adults.
  * They are self-oriented and relate naturally to one or two others, not to large groups.
  * Fun and activity factors must be a central part of a child-centered program.

Educators agree early learning experiences are the most important and produce the most retention.  We want to make our kids' soccer experience a positive one so we also consider these factors:

  * Most children cannot sustain prolonged activity.
  * They function best in suitable starts and stops (rest periods).
  * Concentration span is limited, so frequent changes of pace and activity are essential.

Children love to learn:

  * They learn a great deal more when the ratio of coach to player is reduced.
  * With small numbers and the simple nature of the game, the best teacher is the game itself.
  * With fewer players on the ?eld, each player gets more touches on the ball and has greater opportunity to change location in a fast-flowing, fluid game.
  * Playing short-sided allows players to make simpler decisions and develop an earlier, better understanding of organization of play.
  * Smaller ?elds mean more players are directly involved in play, creating increased levels of both concentration and interest.
  * The reduced ?eld size encourages more shots on goal by all players, therefore more goals scored.

Residual benefits:

  * Parents are introduced to the game in smaller, more understandable doses.
  * Small-sided soccer is a great place to train new referees.

Conduct

1. Sportsmanship

a) The highest standard of good sportsmanship and respect for others are expected to be maintained by everyone in Region 1155 at all times. Physical violence, threats, intimidating behavior, and foul or abusive language is forbidden, and may subject the individual involved to removal from the region.

b) There is no reason in AYSO for a team to "run up" a score.  Each coach is responsible for adjusting their lineup on the field accordingly to prevent their team from running up the score.

2. The Referee

a) The referee is the sole authority on the field of play in accordance with the LAWS of the GAME. The referee has the power and authority to remove spectators, players, or coaches from the playing area if their conduct violates the law of the game, AYSO Guidelines (Region, Area, Section, or National) or otherwise interferes with the course of play.

b) In the younger divisions we often use youth referees. Each of these individuals has taken and passed the same Regional Referee class and certification test as the adult referees. These players/referees do a great service to the AYSO organization, our community, and the younger children that they referee. They are excellent examples to us all of commitment and involvement in a worthwhile endeavor.   At no time will it be tolerated for a coach or spectator to challenge or intimidate a youth referee.

3. The Coach

a) The function of the coach is to provide encouragement and positive direction. Excessive or negative coaching is not permitted.

b) The coach and assistant coach are limited to a safety line that extends one (1) yard from the sideline to which the team is assigned. Coaches should not be closer than this to the field at any time.

c) The coach and assistant coach may only enter the field of play with the consent of the referee.

d) The coaches are expected to set the best example of sportsmanship for their players and to control the behavior of their players, spectators and assistant coaches.

4. Spectators

a) Spectators are forbidden from sideline coaching and must remain behind the safety line. Spectator's vocal efforts are limited to positive cheering and compliments to the players.

b) No one is allowed behind the goal line in any division.

c) Derogatory remarks to the players, coaches, or referees are not permitted under any circumstances. Such behavior will be cause for removal from the field by the referee, board members, or the Regional Commissioner.

5. Alcoholic Beverages/Cigarettes

Neither alcoholic beverages nor cigarettes are permitted at any AYSO game or practice, nor allowed on school property.

6. Cautions and Ejections

a) All cautions and ejections must be noted on the game card by the referee and a report filed with the Regional Referee Administrator within 24 hours of the game.

b) A player, coach, or spectator may be officially cautioned ("Yellow Card") by the referee during a game. Two cautions to an individual during a game constitutes a "Red card" causing removal ("Send Off") from the game. Serious infractions may result in a "Send Off" without a previous warning. If a player, coach, or spectator is "sent off" (red card) or is removed from the game by the Regional commissioner, the violator must immediately leave the field and surrounding area. A player may retire to the sidelines if they do not have a parent present. The violator will also be suspended from participating in the next game in which they are scheduled to participate. In the event that the individual does not leave the field immediately following their removal, or is on the field at their next schedule game, the game may be terminated by the referee or Regional Commissioner.

7. Misconduct

Any misconduct that results in a game being terminated prematurely is against the AYSO philosophies set forth earlier. The referee, Regional Referee Administrator, or Regional commissioner may terminate a game prematurely due to misconduct by the coach, players or spectators.
