Scott Stoker - Quarterback (1983-1986)
Stoker Family
Scott Stoker with His Family
Scott Stoker's playing career as a record-shattering quarterback at Northwestern State was highlighted by the 1988 Southland Conference championship and a trip to the Division I-AA playoff quarterfinals. His coaching career has been marked by more SLC crowns and playoff appearances. So nobody who has followed Stoker's career was surprised last season when he became the first head coach in Northwestern history to lead his team into the Division I-AA playoffs in his initial year on the job.

He was the only first-year head coach in the field of 16 teams for the 2002 national championship tournament. Taking a team picked for fifth in the preseason SLC coaches' poll, Stoker headed a coaching staff that guided the Demons to a tremendously exciting 2002 season. Northwestern soared to a 8-1 record and a No. 3 national ranking, with the only defeat coming at the hands of Southeastern Conference champion Georgia, entering the month of November.

Even after an upset loss at Jacksonville State, the Demons attracted the second-largest crowd ever for a Northwestern home game, an overflow gathering of 17,031 for a mid-November showdown for the conference championship with McNeese State. After a tough loss in that game, NSU’s playoff hopes were on the line along with the biggest trophy in college football, Chief Caddo, a week later at Stephen F. Austin.

Reflecting the competitive fire of their head coach, the Demons twice rallied from seven-point deficits in the final five minutes of play and scored two touchdowns in the final 1:18 to pull out a 42-35 road win over the Lumberjacks, a victory that put Northwestern in position to receive one of eight at-large invitations to the 2002 Division I-AA playoffs. The Demons (9-4) ranked among the nation’s top teams in total defense, rushing defense and punt returns.

While starting three freshmen and four sophomores on offense, NSU averaged nearly 30 points a game with a balanced offense (192 yards rushing per game, 182 yards passing per game). A veteran of 12 highly successful seasons as a collegiate assistant coach after setting single-season and career passing records at Northwestern, Stoker was named Jan. 7, 2002, as the Demons' new head football coach.

He had a 93-51 record as an offensive and defensive assistant coach at Northwestern (1990-93) and McNeese State (1994-2001). He was defensive coordinator at McNeese in 2000-01, running a unit that ranked in the top 6 in Division I-AA in total defense both years. During his eight years at McNeese, the Cowboys made seven I-AA playoff appearances, including a trip to the 1997 national championship game and a 1995 semifinal appearance.

Stoker served as receivers coach, linebackers coach, co-offensive coordinator and finally defensive coordinator under three head coaches with the Cowboys.

He played for and coached under Northwestern's all-time winningest football coach, Sam Goodwin, for nine years. He threw for 4,801 yards from 1986-89, including a single-season mark of 1,966 in 1988 when he led the Demons to the Southland Conference championship and their first Division I-AA playoff appearance, including a 22-13 win at Boise State in the opening round. Stoker coached quarterbacks, running backs and receivers during four seasons (1990-93) on Goodwin's staff, while completing his undergraduate degree in 1991.

He became the first Northwestern graduate in four decades, since Jack Clayton capped his career as head coach with an unbeaten 1966 season, to serve his alma mater as head football coach. At 34 years, 177 days old when he made his head coaching debut with a 35-0 win over Delta State on Aug. 29, Stoker is the third youngest coach in Division I football and the second-youngest coach in school history.

Born March 6, 1968, Stoker is the son of longtime Alexandria Senior High football coach Butch Stoker. Playing for his dad, Scott threw for more than 3,000 career yards for the Trojans. He also hit .414 in baseball. As the Demon quarterback, Stoker was a second-team All-Southland Conference pick as a junior and senior and a Preseason I-AA All-America selection before his senior season of 1989.

He shares the NCAA record for the longest pass completion, a 99-yard touchdown to Victor Robinson against Louisiana-Monroe in 1989 that was the first 99-yard completion in Division I-AA history. He was 9-2-1 as a starter in Southland Conference games, 16-10 overall. He was at his best in the two-minute offense, marching the Demons at least 50 yards in the fourth quarter on 16 different occasions as a senior.

As a junior in an option-based offense and splitting time with two other players, he set a single-season passing record with 1,966 yards that stood until 2001. He ranked third among all Division I-AA quarterbacks with  a 145.5 pass efficiency rating.in 1988.

Stoker ended his playing career atop the career passing  list with 4,801 yards, ranking him seventh on the all-time Southland Conference top 10, and set the school career total offense mark with 5,059 yards, 10th all-time in the SLC. He immediately joined Goodwin’s coaching staff after the 1989 season. He was promoted to call the offensive plays in his final two seasons.

At McNeese, his 2000 defense ranked sixth nationally, seventh vs. the run and 16th in pass efficiency defense. In the 2001 season, the Cowboys were 15th in scoring defense (17.45 ppg), fourth in rushing defense (84.7 ypg) and third in total defense (253.6 ypg) in Division I-AA.

Stoker’s defense led the conference in scoring defense, pass defense, rushing defense, pass efficiency defense, total defense and sacks. His wife, Kim, was a graduate assistant trainer at McNeese. The couple has three daughters: Jennifer, Carli and Zoe.
