ALL Families --
We will get back to the business of baseball soon enough, but I wanted to quickly inform you of one more way you can help a member of our Little League family.
Around this time last year, we sent out word via this listserv that the Memmott family would be participating in the Race for Hope – DC to raise money for research to find a cure for brain cancer. This year’s race will take place on Sunday, May 3rd, and the Memmotts will again be walking.
Scott and Gina Memmott write: "As most of you are aware, our 11-year-old son Benjamin was diagnosed in October 2007 with a malignant, inoperable brain tumor. Benjamin has been battling his illness with incredible strength, courage, fortitude and good humor, but after a period of relative stability, his treatment team at Children’s National Medical Center (“CNMC”) recently determined that his cancer is slowly progressing. Your donations to the 2009 Race for Hope – DC can and will make a difference. Due to your incredible generosity last year, Benjamin and his sister Abby raised over $55,000 of the $67,000 brought in by “Dr. Bear’s Brain Tumor Busters,” the CNMC race team. As a result, CNMC finished second in overall fundraising out of almost 290 teams that participated in the 2008 Race for Hope, and Benjamin was named an honorary Team Captain by the race organizers."
Your response to last season's listserv message was a big part of the success. This year, Arlington Little League will be sending the Memmotts $4,250 raised at this month's Coach-a-Thon for the Cure. If you can, please consider adding to this total by giving what you can. Donations can be made online by clicking on the following link, which will take you to the race page for the Dr. Bear's Brain Tumor Busters team; then please click on either Benjamin's or Abby's name to make your contribution --

In a fight like Ben's, we cannot underestimate the inspirational power of caring friends, a supportive community, and pride in a goal surpassed.
On another note of community support, we are pleased to announce that a tree will be planted in memory of Will Prince at Barcroft Park on Will's 13th birthday -Tuesday, May 5th. A brief ceremony will take place at 7:30 PM. Some of Will's closest friends will take charge of placing the tree in the ground. Immediately thereafter, all those who would like to honor Will's life are invited to place one shovelful of dirt around the tree. Please share this information with anyone who might be a part of this event. It is our hope that it will be a large and joyous celebration of the life of a wonderful young man.
