MILLIONAIRES CANNOT BUY A GOAL: LADY COMETS WIN 4-0

Amid the chill of an especially cold October morning, senior Heidi Frantz stood out from the crowd, electing to wear her short-sleeve jersey, while teammates were dressed in the Comets' warmer ensemble. Frantz is a tough, spirited, and hard-charging player, who loves to get in the way of opponents and break down their game. Her defensive disposition and determination certainly match up with the name of the position she plays---the young woman is a "stopper" indeed. The Williamsport Millionaires had difficulty getting around Frantz and the rest of the Lady Comet defense, putting just two shots on frame during a 4-0 loss at CSE Field.

There was a fair amount of back and forth play early on in this game, with neither side putting much pressure on the opposition goal. Then, about midway through the first half, Abington began to force the action, establishing the better field position. This improved field position paid dividends when Williamsport committed a foul deep in its own territory. On the ensuing free kick, junior Izzy Clauss stepped up and drove home a powerful and well-placed shot from about 25 yards out. As our British soccer friends would say, the Clauss goal was a "cracker" and the keeper had little chance. This goal did not occur, however, until 32 minutes had elapsed. The score stood 1-0 at the half.

The Lady Comets did keep the Millionaires' keeper, Reilly Gossner, under pressure through much of the remainder of the first stanza, putting 7 of their 9 first-half shots on target. In fact, Abington would go on to finish off the game by posting an absolutely outstanding .750 shots-on-goal percentage--which was, by far, the Lady Comets' best effort in this regard all season.

The second half began much like the first, with no scoring until the teams were 25 minutes into the action. Suddenly, senior Paige Eisenlohr was able to hit freshman Ally Christman with a beautiful pass that sliced through the Millionaires' defense and set up Christman's 4th goal of the season. Then, about 12 minutes later, Eisenlohr would again provide the assist on a Katrina Helcoski monster goal from downtown. Finally, with barely two minutes to play, sophomore Perrine Wasser would slam home an unassisted goal from distance to once again play the curtain-closing role she assumed in the Valley View game. The goal was Wasser's third of the season.

Due mostly to Abington's unfortunate stretch of defensive play in the last few minutes of the first half, Williamsport held the advantage in corner kicks for the game. But they did not hold the advantage in much else. In the second half, Williamsport managed just one shot, which came from a free kick opportunity. It would be appropriate to say that, in a conquest against a group of Millionaires, the Lady Comets' "shared the wealth." Not only was each Abington goal scored by a different player but Emma Henzes, Michaelina Holmes, and Abbey Burke also recorded multiple shots on the day.

Melanie Coles had one saveand just one save opportunity in the match.

The team returns to action, and to conference play, Monday evening at Western Wayne. This could be a competitve game, as the Wildcats stand in second place in Division Two. One thing that has, however, always been the case when we have traveled over to Varden to play is that the weather will be COLD!!  So make note of that. Heidi Frantz will, of course, be wearing short sleeves.
