DELAWARE VALLEY NO MATCH FOR LADY COMETS
Recently, we posted on this website a statistic that suggested that the Lady Comets were a "first-half" team, tending to score more of their goals in the first rather than the second stanza of a game. However, in Tuesday's game at Delaware Valley, it seemed as if the team was intentionally working hard to put an end to that statistical "rumor," by recording 4 second-half goals on their way to a resounding 5-0 victory over the Lady Warriors.
To be honest, the first half of the game was played in a mechanical manner. Although the Lady Comets moved the ball with some skill, there appeared to be no "thirst to score goals." The team did record 13 first-half shots, while holding Delaware Valley to zero attempts. But the team seemed to lack an "edge" in their game. Finally, with just 10:37 remaining in the half, Izzy Clauss collected a deep ball and took off on a long-run from the back; she began weaving around several defenders before depositing the ball into the net with a beautiful and authoritative cross-frame shot. After the goal from Clauss, the team seemed to find a spark--a spark that would ignite into a conflagration in the second period.
The second-half scoring barrage began less than six minutes into the action. Ally Christman would record her second goal of the season, punching home an 11-yard blast from the central box. Following the heroics from Christman, Michaelina Holmes would score two more goals in quick succession. The first was a deft unassisted shot from inside the penalty area; and the second--less than three minutes later--was assisted by Clauss. Holmes was extremely active in the second half and found herself in consistently good scoring position. Her partner forward, Paige Eisenlohr, was also seeing a lot of the ball and pressured Deleware Valley goalkeeperTaryn Ficken by hitting several quality shots, even though Eisenlohr could not find the net.
Senior Heidi Frantz would bring a close to the scoring when, near the end of the game, she would finish a loose ball in the box. It was the first goal of her career and placed a tasty icing on the cake of a spirited victory.
Again, Abington goalkeeper Melanie Coles faced zero save opportunities and touched the ball only occasionally. Lydia Lovecchio and Sarah Sopinski did a great job closing down the flanks and worked well in concert with Emma Henzes and Katrina Helcoski. Lovecchio, Clauss and Perrine Wasser were moved around position-wise in this game, perhaps indicating that Coach Hunter sees some flexibility in the lineup. Abbey Burke contributed her usual steady presence as the hub midfielder; and Olivia Julian and Emily Bonsick also saw time in this game, and performed solidly at midfield and full back respectively.
On the long bus ride home, the girls began singing a selection of Christmas carols; it is not exactly clear why this occured unless it was in celebration of the fact that someone by the name of "Clauss" started the scoring in the game.
