HORNETS FAIL TO STING: LADY COMETS BOUNCE HONESDALE 3-0
The bus ride up the Casey Highway seemed long for the Lady Comets, but the entire afternoon must have felt extended for Honesdale, as they exterted themselves to the maximum in their efforts to push the ball into Abington territory. From the opening whistle to closing buzzer, the Lady Comets were in the spotlight. The girls from the Abingtons tapped the rock around the pitch with relative ease in yet another game where the score, although one-sided, failed to fully represent the Lady Comets general dominance of the run of play, Indeed, Abington created all sorts of opportunities for itself but--due to a mixture of poor timing on shots, some bad luck, and several nice goalkeeper rejections--the girls could put only three balls into the net. The team had another decent day as far as shot on goal percentage was concerned, placing 53% of its tries on frame, However, the teams OGS%--the On Goal Scoring percentage--was just .142, which is not where you would expect it to be. Typically, in a quality soccer match, you look for 20-25% of on-goal shots to find their way into the basket.
Alex Chapman lead the scoring by producing two goals on the day. Early on, she sent a low-liner in from 8 yards out, finishing off a well-played cross from Abbey Burke. Later, in the 35th minute, Chapman would knock home an unassisted goal produced from a diagonal dribble drive across the box. In between these efforts from Chapman, Emma Henzes would collect her second goal of the season when she directed a Katrina Helcoski cross into the net.
In the second half, there was a period of drought with respect to goal productivity, although the Abington girls would still enjoy one intense stretch wherein they managed 7 futile on-frame shots. Although no one wants to "run up the score,"Abington's failure to get more on-frame shots into the net could become an issue against better teams, even though the team was able to "get by" today.
Melanie Coles fielded a couple of rolling balls inside the box but had zero save opportunities over the course of the game. And there were times when the back line had little work to do. If the Lady Comets had been able to send a better percentage of their on-goal shots past the keeper, the score would have gotten out of hand.
The junior varsity trounced the baby Hornets by posting a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
Next up, is a game tomorrow (Saturday) against North Pocono, a team that was a 2-1 loser to Honesdale earlier this season. North Pocono did, however, pick up its first win of the season last night, beating West Scranton 3-0. Tomorrow's game is at 11:00, it is at home, and it is a place you should be. The box score on this website will, by the way, provide a much more accurate record of the game stats than the account presented in the Times-Tribune.
