Jalen Doss set a personal record in every race he ran at the 3M meet this past weekend in Union City. Doss won the bantam boys 800m with a time of 2:36 and the 400m in 1:06. Doss came up a little shy of winning his 3rd trophy on Sunday win he finished 4th in the 200m with a PR of 29.16. Cody Lieberman set a PR in the midget boys discus with a throw of 105'. Nick Myers also set a PR to finish 2nd in the intermediate boys discus with a throw of 122'. Myers also finished 2nd in the shot-put with a toss of 39'10". Nigel Burgess finished 5th in the midget boys 1500m.

FRASIER WINS 100M IN MODESTO, BURGESS WINS 1500M & 800M
On Saturday in Modesto Ronald Frasier made a decent recovery to win The Fastest Kid in the West title. After running a 12.73 (3rd fastest) in the preliminary round of the youth boys 100m he won the title by running 12.58 in the finals. "I will win the final" Frasier said to Coach Don after he ran in the prelims. Tashi Nacario also made the youth boys final and finished 6th overall. Nigel Burgess won both the midget boys 1500m and 800m with a time of 5:08 and 2:31 respectively. Alize' Hobdy in her 1st competition ever made the finals and finished 4th overall. Natori Burgess had a 2nd place finish in the midget girls 1500m. Kareem Dupree finished 3rd overall in the bantam boys 100m.

DUPREE AND DOSS DOUBLE WINNERS IN PINOLE
Kareem Dupree, in his 1st meet of the year, won his 100m heat with a time of 14.63 Dupree also helped AEIOUs coed sprint medley relay team of Jalen Doss, Jonae Taylor and Nayloni Burgess win the gold with a very fast 200m leg. Doss won his 100m heat and he also ran the 400m leg of the coed relay. He also finished 2nd in the bantam boy 800m with a time 2:41. Ti Serna won the midget boys 800m with a time of 2:39 while Nigel Burgess won the midget boys 1500m with a time of 5:16. Bantam girl Nayloni Burgess won her 800m race with a time of 3:15. She also was a part of the coed relay victory. Nick Myers won the intermediate boys shot put and Andrew Colton finished 2nd in both the 1500m and 3000m.

MVP AWARD TO BE NAMED AFTER LATE AEIOU COACH WARREN LIEBERMAN
On Saturday AEIOU announced that this years MVP trophy and all future MVP awards will be named in honor of the late Coach Warren Lieberman. Coach Lieberman passed away last week in his Kings Beach home. He was a well known coach, a good friend, a great father and we will miss him dearly.

EXCERPT FROM AEIOUs BA ATHLETE CHRONICLES
The following is a short story written by Roman Phillips, 10 years old, during his trip to the Jr. Olympics in New Orleans. This is one of many written by our athletes which we will feature here on our website.

"I ran the 800m today. It started at 9:00 a.m. but I did not run until 10:00. I think I did O.K. in the 800m. I could have ran the first lap faster and dropped my shoulders/arms. My feet started to hurt because I was wearing the wrong shoes. I watched Frankie and Ty do their events also."

"I awake early went to the track so I could high jump. I didn't do so well in the high jump. Then we left and followed Coach Don downtown and God knows where...No offense Coach Don. Then we went back to the hotel and we didn't do much. Later my dad and I went to the practice track to throw the discus and then it was back to the hotel."

"Today I did the 100 meter dash. It was hard but it was fun. I finished in fourth place and I made it to the semi-finals. My time time was 14.09 which is slow for me. I normally run 13.60-13.80 We went to the River Walk to some restaurants but there wasn't much food left."

"I didn't do a lot today but I had a little spark. I woke up got dressed and went to City Park to see Frankie, Roman, Rodney and Jalen run the 4x400m relay. Then my mom Roman, Frankie and I walked down to where Nick was throwing shot-put. After that my mom and I got slushi's and walked to the car. My mom drove towards downtown parked and we caught the trolley. It took us downtown to the mall on the Mississippi River (Riverwalk). We ate at the food court. My mom had a po-boy sandwich and I had, to me, the best hamburger I ever tasted with great seasoned fries. After eating we ate some more. This time we had sweet snacks. I had a caramel green apple with pecans. After all that we caught the trolley back to the rental car. We got caught in traffic. When we got back to the hotel I changed clothes for discus practice."

QUARLES 3RD IN LONG JUMP, DOSS 7TH IN 800M AT JR. OLYMPICS
On Friday August 4th Frank Quarles capped off a tough week of competition for AEIOU at the AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans. Quarles finished 3rd in the bantam boys long jump with a leap of 14'11.5". He also finished 24th overall in 100m. Jalen Doss finished 7th in the sub-bantam boys 800m race with a PR of 2:39 and 11th overall in the 200m with a PR of 29.20 Both Quarles and Doss were part of the bantam boy 4x400m relay team that dropped the baton earlier in the week. Although the relay team didn't make the anticipated finals after the drop they still managed to finish 11th overall with a time of 4:44. Roman Phillips finished 18th overall in the bantam boys 1500m and 20th in the 800m. Rodney Taylor set personal records in the sub-bantam boys 100m and 400m. Cody Lieberman finished 10th overall in the midget boys shot-put with a throw of 38'11"

The team would like to send a special thanks and a special shout out to Coach Warren and Coach Shana for inviting us up to Reno, Nevada to train. Coach Warren and Coach Shana (former College All American) worked with throwers Cody Lieberman and Quiana Powell at Reno High Schools great facility. Coach Don Edwards worked out runners Frank Quarles and Roman Phillips as the team prepared for their trip to New Orleans. After practice everyone went to Circus Circus for lunch, fun and games.

BANTAM BOYS WIN BOTH REGIONAL RELAYS 4X100M,4X400M,100M & LONG JUMP
AEIOU finished the regular season with a decent showing in Livermore this weekend at the Region 14 Championships. On Saturday morning Austin Collier started the team off by winning the bantam boys long jump with a leap of 13'4." Cody Lieberman followed by winning the midget boys shot-put with a very good mark of 40'5.5." Quiana Powell the only female competing this weekend for AEIOU set a personal record of 26'5.5" in the midget girls shot-put competition to finish 3rd. On Sunday Frank Quarles won the bantam boys 100m with a time of 14.08 a day after qualifying with the fastest time of 13.64 Both Collier and Quarles joined Jalen Doss and Roman Phillips to win the bantam boys 4x100m with a time of 57.50 and the 4x400m with a time of 4:35.87 Also on Sunday Lieberman capped of his weekend with a 2nd place finish in the midget boys discus.
All of these athletes qualified for the USA Track & Field Jr. Olympics in Indianapolis, Indiana later this month.

AEIOU Athletes Among Best In Nation
AEIOU athletes are among the best in the nation based on performances at major invitational association and regional meets. Although some of our athletes have had better marks during the season the United Stars Track Club of Philadelphia scoring/ranking system only records verified marks from major track meets. Athletes are considered an Elite All American if he or she has a top 20 mark/time nationally in their perspective events. If the athlete has a mark/time among the top 100 in the nation they're considered to be an Elite Honor Roll Performer. Our Elite All American candidates so far this year are: Cody Lieberman in both the midget boys shot-put (9th,10th,19th) and discus (13th,16th). Frank Quarles in the bantam boys long jump (12th and 19th). Quarles season best of 15'3" would have him ranked 2nd nationally. AEIOUs 4x400m relay is currently ranked 8th nationally. Athletes whom are currently All American Honor Roll candidates are: Adam Nacario 52nd in the intermediate boys 3000m. Jalen Doss 83rd in the 800m. Roman Phillips is currently 28th in the bantam boys 800m and 30th in the 1500m. Phillips before battling leg injuries was ranked as high as 12th in both events this year. Frank Quarles is ranked 63rd and 81st respectively in the bantam boys 100m. AEIOUs bantam boys 4x100m relay team is currently ranked 51st after only 2 races and they're expected to run much faster before the end of the season.

LIEBERMAN WINS AEIOU'S 1ST NATIONAL TITLE IN KNOXVILLE
On Friday morning at the Youth Nationals in Knoxville, Tennessee Cody Liebermans toss of 38'2" helped capture AEIOU's 1st National Champion in the midget boys competition. "I was a little bit disappointed because I didn't set a PR (personal record) today but I'll take it" said Cody after his award ceremony. Cody also finished 2nd in the midget boys discus with a PR and team record of 95'5"

Lieberman Just Shy Of 41' Feet Powell PRs 25'9.5" Headed To New Orleans
Cody Lieberman and Quiana Powell both set personal and team records in the midget shot-put division on Saturday in Visalia at the AAU Region 13A Championships. Lieberman won the boys shot-put with a toss of 40'7.5" He also set a PR in winning the midget boys discus with a toss of 92'10" Powell won the girls division with a toss of 25'9.5" Nick Myers finished 3rd in the intermediate boys division with a toss of 40' In the bantam boys division Frank Quarles won triple gold. Quarles ran a 13.74 to win the 100m,leaped 14'1.5" to win the long jump and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay. Sub-bantam boys Jalen Doss and Rodney Taylor came just 100m shy of sweeping the sprint competition. Doss won the 200m with a time of 29.88 and the 800m with a time of 2:49. While Taylor won the 400m dash with a time of 1:13.26. Both Doss and Taylor were members of the winning 4x400m relay team. Tashi Nacario won the Sub-youth boys discus competition while his brother Adam won double gold. Adam won the intermediate boys 1500m with a time of 4:37 and 3000m with a time of 9:58.

Lieberman,Myers,Phillips & Quarles Lead Way As Boys Compete For 3M Team Title
AEIOU made a great run for the boys team title at the 3M Invitational last weekend. AEIOU finished 4th with 58 1/2 points just behind Quiet Fire of Los Angeles 59 1/2. Vegas Flyers won the title with 73 points followed by L.A. Jets with 70. AEIOU accomplished this feat with only 10 male athletes competing against teams with as many 48 males. Cody Lieberman set a personal and team record with a shot-put of 38'8" to win the midget boys gold. He also finished 2nd in the discus with a toss of 85'. Nick Myers won the open boys discus (108') and finished 3rd in the shot-put. Roman Phillips set a personal and team record in the bantam boys 800m with a very good time of 2:34 to finish 2nd. He also added the gold in the 1500m (5:30). Frank Quarles capped of a great weekend by running the anchor leg of the bantam boys 4x400m relay with a split time of 104.58 to help the team finish 2nd. Isaiah Banks and Rodney Taylor join Quarles and Phillips to set a new team record of 4:55. Earlier in the day Quarles won the 100m (13.85) and long jump (13'1.5"). Banks finished tied for 5th in the bantam boys long jump. Nigel Burgess finished 5th in the midget boys 3000m and 4th in the midget boys 1500m (5:31). Tashi Nacario finished 4th in the youth boy discus competition with a toss of 90'2". Natori Burgess the only female competing at the meet for AEIOU finished 6th in the midget girl 3000m.

NACARIO, MYERS SET PRs IN PINOLE
Tashi Nacario and Nick Myers came up with some big discus throws on Saturday in Pinole to win both the youth and intermediate titles respectively. Nacario set a PR with a toss of 92'6.5" and Myers had a toss of 112'4". Myers also set a shot-put PR with a 41'3". Both of Myers marks set AEIOU team records. Rodney Taylor performed well running 1:12 in the bantam boys 400m and 15:37 in the 100m competition to set 2 PRs. Frank Quarles (100m, 200m & 4x400m) and Roman Phillips (800m, 1500m & 4x400m) were triple gold medal winners.

DONAHUE, PHILLIPS WIN 800M BANTAM TITLES/TROPHIES
On Saturday April 30th at Laney College in Oakland Aliyah Donahue and Roman Phillips won both 800m bantam titles. The 800m race was one of 3 featured races in which the winner received both a ribbon and a trophy. Donahue ran her first 800m race of the year in 2:47.50 to win the girls title and Phillips set a personal record in winning the boys title in 2:36. Donahue also won her 400m heat with a time of 1:11 while Phillips won the bantam boys 1500m race with a good time of 5:24. Kendall Banks set a team record for sub-bantam boys in the long jump with a leap of 9'8.5" Frank Quarles won the bantam boys 100m with a time of 14.33. Quarles also joined Phillips, Isaiah Banks and Rodney Taylor to finished 2nd in the 4x200m race. AEIOU was edged out at the finish by members of the Umoja Track Club.

Edwards a freshman won the open girls division of the long jump with a leap of 17'8.5" Hayes a junior finished a close 2nd in the 800m invitational division with a great time of 1:54.27

QUARLES LONG JUMP 15 FEET IN OAKLAND
Frank Quarles set a team record in the bantam boys long jump in Oakland on Saturday with a leap of 15'3". Quarles also won his 200m heat just ahead of AEIOU teammate Arric Graham. Isaiah Banks set a PR in the bantam boy 100m dash with a time of 15.64. Aliyah Donahue won her bantam girl 400m heat with a time of 1:13. Nyesa Enakaya finished 3rd in her 400m heat with a time of 1:05 in the youth girl competition. Malcolm Donahue finished 2nd in the youth boy shot-put and Nick Myers finished 1st in the intermediate boys competition.

PHILLIPS WINS 800M SETS PR IN 1500M AT SANTA ROSA
Roman Phillips won the bantam boys 800m in Santa Rosa on Saturday with a time of 2:45. Phillips also finished 2nd in the 1500 meter run with a personal best of 5:32 and capped off his day by running 2nd leg of AEIOU's 1st place bantam boys 4x400m relay. Frank Quarles also a member of the 4x400m relay team won the 100m (14.31) and 400m (1:09) bantam boys competition. Arric Graham won his 200m heat and finished 3rd in the 100m. Cody Lieberman won 2nd place in both the midget boys shot-put (36'6") and discus (87'7").

Newcomer Quarles Wins Triple Gold In Hercules
On Saturday April 2nd at Hercules High School Frank Quarles the newest member of the AEIOU Track Club won 3 gold medals. Quarles won the bantam boys long jump, 100m dash and edged teammate Roman Phillips in 400m run. Phillips whom won the bantam boys 800m run (2:45.62) won his 400m heat 1:12.24 but was slightly behind Quarles 1:11.89 overall. Kendall Banks won the sub-bantam boys long jump with a leap of 9'7" and finished 4th in the sub-bantam 400m dash. Quiana Powell was 3rd in the midget girls shot-put and Nick Myers won the intermediate boys shot-put.
Also Saturday in Hayward at the OAL Invitational AEIOU high school athlete Clinton Hayes won the 800m run with a good time of 1:56.40

Lieberman Breaks Record In Flagstaff
On Sunday a small group of AEIOU athletes competed in the invitational indoor meet at the University of Northern Arizona at Flagstaff. Cody Lieberman broke the meet record in the midget boys shot-put with a throw of 37'10" shattering the previous mark by nearly 2 feet. Cody also placed 2nd in the midget boys high jump. Nigel Burgess won a bronze medal in midget boys 800m. Roman Phillips finished 3rd in the bantam boys 400m and 4th in the 800m. Nick Myers won the gold in the intermediate boys shot-put. Thank-you Coach Warren for your patience to drive these athletes to Flagstaff.

AEIOU Attends Clinic /Tribute To Olympian Willie Davenport
AEIOU athletes and parents had the opportunity to meet and learn from many past and present Olympians at The Willie Davenport Olympian Track & Field Clinic at James Logan High School. Davenport whom passed away in June of 2002 was honored by many of his 1968 Olympic track teammates and all in attendance. John Carlos and Tommie Smith spoke on how much of an athlete and a gentleman Davenport was and how he has been missed in the track & field community.
After the tribute athletes were divided into groups depending on their track & field event to receive individualized training. Hurdlers were instructed by World Record Holder Kevin Young, Tony Campbell and Andre Phillips. Jumpers were instructed by World Record Holder Mike Powell and James Logan Alumni Jernae Wright. Sprinters were able to learn from John Carlos, Tommie Smith and Brian Howard just to name a few. During the lunch period AEIOU athletes were able to talk with many past and present Olympians and receive autographs. As you can see it was a very fun and productive day for all who attended.

CLINICS TO AID INNER CITY YOUTH
The Bay Area Chapter of The 100 Black Men of America Inc. will sponsor a series of 9 clinics begining January 22, 2005 at Phillip Burton High School in San Francisco (8:00a.m.). The clinics are not limited to but will aid inner city students who statistically are more likely to have asthma or become type 2 diabetics due to lack of physical activity. Each of the 9 clinics will be free of charge and followed by a track meet and snacks for all the participants.
Coach Don Edwards and his staff will help conduct the introduction to long jump portion of the clinics to be held on January 22nd at Phillip Burton High School and January 29th at McClymonds High School in Oakland.

AEIOU Athletes Run For Hunger
Happy Thanksgiving to all! Early this Thanksgiving morning Team AEIOU ran to raise money for the hunger at Sacramento State. With over 10,000 people in in the crowd our athletes ran well in the 5k competition.
Nigel Burgess finshed 1st in the 12 and under boys division and 106th overall with a time of 20:22. Roman Phillips finished 2nd in the 12 and under division and 201st overall with a time of 22:57. Natori Burgess whom finished 2nd in the girls 12 and under girls division and 164th overall had a time of 21:55. Her younger sister Nayloni just 7 years of age ran a great race and finished 7th in the 12 and under division and 314th overall with a time of 24:57. Adam Nacario finished 2nd in the boys 13-15 division and 47th overall with a time of 17:59. Tyler Scott finished 6th in the 13-15 division and 66th overall with a time of 18:57. Andrew Colton finished 7th in his division and 76th overall with a time of 19:23. And last but not least Coach Nacario finished 349th overall.....this after a pit stop at the rest room. BURGESS TWINS WIN PA POINTS TITLES
On Sunday November 21st, at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Natori and Nigel Burgess were awarded the bantam girls and boys Pacific Association Region 14 Cross Country Point Titles respectively. Nigel and Natori earned their awards by accumulating the least amount of points during the regular season cross country schedule. For example; if an athlete wins a race he or she is awarded 1 point and for 2nd place he or she would receive 2 points. The higher you finish the least amount of points you would receive. Roman Phillips finished 7th overall in the bantam boys points race. Although the sub-bantam athletes were not recognized by the Association, Nayloni Burgess (7 yrs.) would have finished in 1st place in the sub-bantam girls division.

Nayloni Wins Gold In Reno Her 1st 3K Race
On Sunday November 14th in Reno, Nevada Nayloni Burgess, 7 years old, ran her first 3K race and won a gold medal in the sub-bantam division. Nayloni finished the tough course in 16:02. Natori Burgess won the gold medal in the bantam girls age group with a time of 13:40.

BURGESS TWINS WIN IN FOLSOM
On Sunday October 3rd in Folsom AEIOU competed in its first cross country meet of the season. Lead by Natori and Nigel Burgess whom swept both the bantam girls and boys division AEIOU performed very well. Natori finished the tough course with a time of 13:30 and Nigel won with a time of 12:53. Roman Phillips finished 9th in the bantam boys division with a time of 14:20. Nayloni Burgess only 7 years of age finished 4th in the sub-bantam girls division in 9:55.

HAYES, NACARIO & PHILLIPS SHINE IN GRANITE BAY
This past weekend At Granite Bay High AEIOU's distance group performed well. Roman Phillips started the weekend off by running 2:45 in the bantam boys 800m run followed by a bantam team record in the 1500m of 5:41. Phillips set a personal record in qualifying for Fresno's Top 3 Meet. Youth boy Adam Nacario also qualified in 2 events finishing the 3000m in 10:24 and the 1500m in 4:46. Clinton Hayes capped off a fantastic weekend with a 2nd place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:16. Earlier on Saturday Hayes won the 800m with a time 0f 1:59.90 and finished 2nd in the 400m with a time of 51.33. Former AEIOU star Deja Edwards won 2 golds and a silver for the Acorn Oscar Bailey Track Club. Edwards won the youth girls long jump and finished 2nd in the triple jump. Other qualifiers were John Mckormick, Cody Lieberman, Tashi Nacario and Nick Myers.

Our Athletes Excelled with the Opportunities presented to them this past weekend at the Tulare AAU National Qualifier and at the West Coast Classic in Fresno this past weekend, June 19th and 20th. Almost every athlete set PRs between the two meets. Our weight crew was impressive. Quiana Powell qualified for the Nationals with a second place in the Midget shot put. Cody Lieberman won the sub-midget shot. Tashi Nacario won the midget shot. Nick Myers won the shot and threw three PRs.
Our middle distance runners were all impressive. Clint Hayes won the 400, 800, and 1500 while Roman Gray finished finished first in the 3000 and qualified for the Nationals in the 800. Both Clint and Roman competed in the intermediate age group. Adam Nacario won the 3000, placed second in the 800, and qualified for the Nationals in the 1500 as well. Roman Phillips qualified for the Nationals in the 1500 with 6:00 on Saturday, then ran a 5:47 on Sunday after swimming Saturday night. Aaliyah Donahue was pretty impressive with her performances in the 200, 400, and 800 qualifying for the Nationals in two events. Kendall Banks continues to impress his older teamates with his work ethic and fortitude in spite of being one of the youngest athletes out there.
It was an evident display of Idealism and Unity this past weekend. Way to go AEIOU. Teamwork!! For his three PRs this past weekend. Nick Myers is the AEIOU Athlete of the Week. Congratulations Nick!
Cross Country News
Adam Nacario stayed active with a busy cross country season. He ran five races between October 4th and Thanksgiving day before taking a break. He won the Yolo County Championships over a field of 33 other athletes on October 4th. He was third at the Bella Vista Invitational on October 18th.
At the Lincoln/Lodi Invitational which took place on October 25th, Adam ran with the high schoolers because they didn't have a middle school/junior high class. He finished fifth with a time of 10:44 over the two mile course in a crowded field of high school runners and fellow AEIOU team mate running for Franklin High, Chris Heylin, came in third with a time of 10:36.
In November, Adam competed in the Acorn Invitational in Alameda on the 9th where he came in sixth. On Thanksgiving Day, Adam and Coach Nacario ran in the annual Run to Feed the Hungry road race. Adam came in 58th overall in a field of 1567 runners. He was the first 13 year old to finish the 5k course and ran a time of 19:12. He beat Coach Nacario by "about a mile". This race raised about $300,000 for the Sacramento Food Bank.

Frasier, Lieberman & Myers Win Big In Bakersfield
On Saturday April 17th, 5 of AEIOUs top athletes made the trip down south to Bakersfield to compete in the Greyhounds invitational meet. Kendall Banks, Roman Phillips, Ronald Frasier, Cody Lieberman and Nick Myers all performed very well. These athletes competed in 10 events and they won 10 awards. Frasier and Lieberman lead the way with double golds. Frasier won the midget boys 100m dash with a time of 13.15 and the long jump with a leap of 15'9". Lieberman won both the midget boys shot-put (31'7") and discus (PR 79'). Nick Myers won the youth boys discus with a PR of 103' and finished 2nd in the shot-put with a throw of 35'4". Kendall Banks in his 1st year of competition had a 3rd place finish in the subbantam boys 100m dash with a time of 17.9 and a 4th place finish in the 200m dash. Roman Phillips also won 2 awards. He finished 2nd in the bantam boys 800m dash and 7th overall in the 400m dash with a time of 1:14.
