These stats come with a disclaimer...they are not the official stats from the school's scorebook.  These are captured on a PDA program and sometimes it is difficult to correct mistakes if they are discovered later in the game.  They should be pretty accurate...but definitely not perfect.  Also - I generally do not pay much attention to the rotation of players on the field for the opposing team so the names of who makes the plays for them (other than the pitcher) are likely to be incorrect.

Jags Season Comes to a Close

Twenty six games and two and a half months later it is time to reflect on the season.  The Jags started the season with mixed expectations after losing a lot of fire power at the plate with last year's senior class.  The team was 18-8 overall coming in third in the conference after losing the tie breaker with Middle Creek when both teams finished 11-5 in the regular season conference play.  For the first time since 2004 the team made it into the second round of the playoffs.  The team loses a significant portion of the starting line up with Blair Betts, Gerrit VanGenderen, David Hamm, Michael King, Daniel Mason, Matt Ruth, Dillon Rudio, and Walter Nolasco all graduating leaving lots of opportunity for JV players to step up next year. The good news is three starters accounting for 44 of the 148 runs and 33 of the 110 RBIs along with two pitchers who accounted for half of the wins will be returning next year. 

The great thing about this year's team was different players stepped up in every game to deliver the three component baseball that led to winning streaks of 5 and 8 games.  The expectation was this year's offense would not be as high powered as last season with the loss of the fire power last year's seniors brought to the plate.  The team proved that wrong batting an incredible 95 points higher than opponents (see last year's summary to understand how significant this number is) while almost scoring double the runs of the competition.  While the team did not have the long ball hitters of last year they still outslugged opponents by 114 points and had an on base percentage 79 points higher.  On the mound the Jags had 70 more Ks, a batting average against percentage 102 points lower, and an amazing ERA that was just over half of the opposition.

Loss: Blair Betts 

The Jags season has come to an end in the second round of the playoffs.  The first four innings looked like the Jags were in control and headed to the Sectional Round of the playoffs as Chris Williams took the mound and pitched solidly giving up one unearned run through four.  Apex jumped out with that one run lead in the first only to have the Jags attack in the bottom of the first combining hits with errors by Apex to drive 4 runs across.   Unfortunately, the defense broke down in the fifth where two errors opened the way to Apex scoring 4 runs.  Blair Betts came in mid-fifth in relief but a double cleared the bases to make the score 5-4.  The Jags managed to get runners on in the late innings but could not get them across the plate.  The Jags offense was scattered throughout the lineup with Daniel Mason having 2 hits (1B-2, R), and one hit each by Blair Betts (1B, 3BB, R), Dillon Rudio (2B), Michael King (2B, BB), Ben Snotherly (1B, BB, R, RBI), and Gerrit VanGenderen (1B, R, RBI).    The Jags have had a great run this season making it to the second round in the playoffs for the first time since 2004.  Best of luck to the seniors as they move on and all the returning players with next year's season.

If you remember my write up 2 games ago, I had this quote in my write up “The catch is, to win in the post season, it requires an entire team to step up, give their absolute best, and work together in every game.”  Today, the Jags pulled together with the entire team stepping up when they were called upon to contribute to today’s win.  Blair Betts was on the mound through 3 and 2/3 innings giving up 5 earned runs on 7 hits, 2 walks, and 4 Ks.  The Pride seemed to be on the verge of continuing Athens losing streak but David Hamm came on to shut down the attack in the 4th.  The Jags pulled back within one in the bottom of the fourth and Chris Williams came on with a fantastic relief effort in the fifth to pitch 2 1/3 innings on 23 pitches giving up no hits and no walks.  Athens kept working the offense with runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to tie and take the lead.  The Jags played team ball all around tonight beyond the great relief pitching including solid defense and the bats roaring with every starter reaching base.  Patrick Graham (1B-3, R) led the way going 3 for 4 followed by Gerrit VanGenderen (1B, 2B, R), Blair Betts (1B-2, R), Chris Williams (1B, R, RBI), Dillon Rudio (1B, R, RBI), Daniel Mason (1B, RBI), and Matt Ruth (1B).  Championships are won with this type of team ball where everyone steps up when the opportunity presents itself.  Our Jags take a lineup with 8 300+ batters into the second round.  If they can keep the bats hot and continue to play team ball the prospects look good for a deep run into the playoffs.

The Jags lost their tie breaker against Middle Creek putting them into the 3rd seed out of the Tri-9 conference going into the playoffs.  Athens Drive once again did not bring over powering baseball to the game but at least showed signs of the team that was on the field just a few short weeks ago.  Blair Betts started on the mound and gave up 2 runs in 2 innings on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 3 Ks.  The first two innings looked like a continuation of Friday's game with 4 errors but somehow the Jags managed to get past those first 2 innings and start to play some inspired ball.  At the plate it looked like the Jags were back on track in the 1st with Dillon Rudio walking and Patrick Graham immediately hitting him in on a scorching double down the line.  Unfortunately the bats went cold again with Ben Snotherly having the only other hit through the 6th.  Gerrit VanGenderen hit the mound in the 3rd and pitched a very solid 4 innings only giving up 1 hit and during those 4 innings the Jags looked like that team we know they can be with some great plays behind Gerrit.  Ben Snotherly entered in the 7th and struck out the side with ease.  In the bottom of the 7th Blair Betts singled and Chris Williams hit a double to drive Blair in tying the game.  It looked like momentum was on Athens side but the Mustangs treated the extra inning like it was the first and scored 4 runs on 5 hits and the Jags could not mount a come back in the bottom of the 8th.  The Jags take the field Friday to start the playoffs.

Athens Drive came into the game statistically better than Holly Springs in runs allowed and runs scored.  Unfortunately statistics don't always tell the full story as the Jags had a difficult time in all three components of the game and the Golden Hawks showed why they are the conference champions this year.  Chris Williams started on the mound and held Holly Springs to 2 earned runs through four innings but unfortunately the errors crept back into the Jags game allowing 3 unearned runs also.  The result was Chris throwing a lot more pitches and entering the fifth inning obviously tiring in the warmest game of the year.  Through 4 innings the Jags were in it with Blair Betts scoring in the second on the Hawks only error of the game and Ben Snotherly scoring on a solo homerun in the fourth.  Unfortunately the Hawks took serious flight in the 5th unleashing a 7 hit / 7 run inning where the Jags also helped them along with 2 more errors.  David Hamm and Gerrit VanGenderen came in on the mound to end out the 5th but the Jags could not manage another run to keep from being run ruled.  The result is Holly Springs takes the championship and the Jags are in a tie with Middle Creek for second place.  At this point it appears a tie breaker game will be played early next week at a neutral site to break the tie.  The Jags need to get back on track with the three component baseball they were putting on the field that resulted in their 8 game winning streak leading up to this week.  What has been neat about this year is different individuals have stepped up in each game to carry the team to victory.  The catch is, to win in the post season, it requires an entire team to step up, give their absolute best, and work together in every game.  The Jags still take the seventh best runs allowed stat (according to N&O) and a lineup with 9 players batting over .300 into the playoffs.  Lets hope they can pull it together and make a run through the playoffs.

The Jags took the field at Apex with high hopes of a win to go into Friday's game against Holly Springs for a shot at the championship being just one game behind them.  It was not to be tonight though.  Apex, fighting for their playoff life brought sound pitching and solid D.  Blair Betts took the mound for the Jags and through 5 innings was withing one hit of perfect having 8 Ks at that point.  Athens managed to put runners on the bases more than the Cougars but could not capitalize on three instances of men in scoring position.  Apex found the bats in the 6th inning stringing together hits to put 3 runs on the board.  Blair struck out two more but the damage was done and the Jags could not get a runner across in the 7th.  Six Jags had hits led by Blair Betts with a triple and Matt Ruth, Ben Snotherly, Patrick Graham, Michael King, and David Hamm each with singles.  This update is being posted a day late and as a result there is some additional information.  Holly Springs lost tonight against Green Hope which means the Jags still have a shot at the conference championship on Friday when they play Holly Springs.  Come on out at 3:30 for senior day and 4pm for a great finish to the regular season.

The bats came alive again for the Jags against Fuquay tonight as Athens run ruled the Bengals for the second time this season.  The Jags hit an incredible .519 from the plate including a 6 run first inning which was all they needed to win.  Blair Betts (2-1B, 2BB, 3R, RBI) and Daniel Mason (1B, 2BB, RBI, Sac) each had a perfect on base percentage while Dillon Rudio (1B, 2B, BB, 2R, 4RBI), Michael King (2-1B, BB, 2R, 2RBI),  Gerrit VanGenderen (2-1B, BB, 2R, RBI), and David Hamm (2-1B, R, RBI) all contributed 2 hits each.  Matt Ruth (1B, BB, RBI), Ben Snotherly (1B, BB, 2R), and Patrick Graham (3B, R, RBI) each added hits meaning the entire line up had a hit.  Chris Williams pitched well for 5 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks, and 2Ks.  Ben Snotherly came in to close out the 6th inning with 1 run on 2 hits.  Defensively the Jags continue to look better and better with the highlight tonight being a diving catch by Ben Snotherly to rob a sure double.  The win puts the Jags within one win (or a Middle Creek loss) of sole possession of second place in the Tri-9 heading into the playoffs, and two wins away from winning the conference.  The Jags are back on the field at Apex Tuesday night at 7pm.

In their last non-conference game before the playoffs, the Jags took on Enloe with Gerrit VanGenderen on the mound.  Gerrit took a no hitter into the 7th inning but the leadoff batter managed the only hit of the game for Enloe.  Gerrit came off the mound at that point having pitched a solid game after a long break from being on the mound and Ben Snotherly closed the last inning out.  The Jag defense was once again solid and the bats connected although not as solidly as would have been expected against the weaker Eagle team.  Patrick Graham (2B, BB, R) and Owen Markulin (1B, RBI) each were perfect at the plate.  Matt Ruth (1B, R), David Hamm (1B, R), Dillon Rudio (1B), Ben Snotherly (1B, 2RBI), and Gerrit VanGenderen (1B) each contributed to the 7 hit game.  The Jags are back on the field Friday afternoon in conference play against Fuquay.

The Jags put their triple threat baseball on the field today against a pesky Panther Creek team.  Blair Betts pitched the entire game and was in complete control through the first four innings striking out 8 of the first 13 batters and finished overall with 12Ks, 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 earned runs.  The Jags looked like the offense was going to explode again when they put 3 runs up in the 2nd but the bats cooled off.  Panther Creek’s bats came alive in the 5th when they tied the game up with a 3 run inning.  Athens struck back in the 6th to take the lead but the Jag defense stepped in for the last three innings to shut the Catamounts down including two plays by Daniel Mason that led to runners being shot down, a diving fielding play by Dillon Rudio and lastly a lay out diving catch by Gerrit VanGenderen to end the game.   The offense was led by Michael King going 3 for 3 with a run and RBI and Patrick Graham….that’s Patrick Graham…going 3 for 4 (2-1B, 2B).  Blair Betts (2B, 2R, BB), Dillon Rudio (1B, R, RBI), David Hamm (1B, 2RBI), and Ben Snotherly (1B) rounded out the hitting.

The Jags captured another close win tonight over the Cary Imps.  Chris Williams pitched another brilliant complete game allowing three men on base with one hit, one hit by pitch and one on by a dropped third strike he while racking up 7 strike outs.  The only threat of the evening by the Imps was in the top of the fifth.  While the Jag defense was outstanding all night with key plays and catches, none was bigger than David Hamm’s snag of a sure up the middle ball which he gloved to Dillon Rudio who made an off balance throw to turn the ball and prevent the man on third from scoring.  The Jags managed 6 hits in the game lead by Patrick Graham (1B, 2B, R) followed by Matt Ruth (1B), Daniel Mason (1B, BB), Dillon Rudio (1B), and Gerrit VanGenderen who drove in the winning run with a base hit in the bottom of the 6th.  The Jags continue to find the right combination of pitching, defense, and offense to deliver the wins.  The Jags are back on the field against Panther Creek at 4:30 on Tuesday.

The second game against Lee County within a week looked to be a complete rematch of the first game with the starting pitchers from the first game facing off again.  It quickly became clear that this game was not going to be like the last...  The Jag bats were back in overdrive as the team quickly put up 5 runs in the first 2 innings knocking the starting pitcher out of the game.  Throughout the afternoon the Jag lineup patiently put base hit after base hit into the field to rack up 15 total hits.  The attack was led by Matt Ruth going a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate (3-1B, BB, 2R) followed by Ben Snotherly (2-1B, 2B, 4RBI), and David Hamm (3-1B, 3R, 1RBI), and Daniel Mason (2-1B, BB, R, 2RBI).  Blair Betts continued where he left off last week with his mastery over the Lee County line up going 5 innings allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, with 8Ks.  Ben Snotherly and David Hamm each came in for an inning to close out the game.  The Jags are back in action Friday night at the USA Baseball Training Facility for 7pm start facing Cary.

THE JAGS HAVE MOVED INTO 2ND PLACE!  The Jags battled a stubborn Middle Creek team to avenge their first loss of the season and put pitching, hitting and fielding all together in today's game.  Chris Williams led the way on the mound going 6 innings giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 6 Ks in another solid game.  David Hamm came in to relieve and shutdown a late Mustang attack.  The defense backed Chris up very well making the plays to stop some early attacks by Middle Creek.  At the plate the Jags were back in action lead by Dillon Rudio with 2 singles followed by Ben Snotherly (1B, 1BB, 1R), Blair Betts (2B, 2RBI), David Hamm (2B, 1R), Patrick Graham (1B, 1R, 1RBI), and Daniel Mason (1B, 1R).  The Jags struck early in the bottom of the first with a series of hits and taking advantage of an early error by the Mustangs.  Middle Creek struck back in the 3rd with a solo homerun but the Jags once again attacked taking advantage of another error with two out that lead to two runs being scored.  Middle Creek once again struck in the 6th with 2 unearned runs and made it exciting to the end but our Jags prevailed and own second place in the Tri-9.  They are on the field again Tuesday down at Lee County.

Defense was the name of the game for the Jags.  Athens put error free defense on the field against the Lee County Jackets and took advantage of a couple key errors by the Jackets to take the lead.  Blair Betts pitched a complete game giving up 3 hits and 3 walks along with 6 K's and keeping Lee County's bats cool with a very solid performance on the mound.  The defense was outstanding during the game turning 2 double plays and making key defensive plays when the Jackets mounted an offensive attack.  The Jag bats were not as hot as last week but David Hamm and Daniel Mason led the way each with 2 hits to provide the only hits for Athens.  The Jags face Middle Creek Friday at Athens in a battle for sole ownership of 2nd place in the conference.  Come cheer the boys in blue and orange on!

Almost Perfect - that is the only way to describe Ben Snotherly's pitching performance against Green Hope Friday night as the Jags bounced back with a win.  To give you an idea of how hard this it, there have been a total of 18 perfect games in MLB history.  Ben had a perfect game going into the 5th inning striking out 9 of the 12 batters he faced to that point.  It was not to be though as Ben walked one in the 5th and that was followed by a fielding error but Ben captured a complete game no hitter in five innings as Athens shutout Green Hope by run ruling them.  The bats were back in action led by Chris Williams with a pair of doubles that drove in 5 runs, followed by Michael King and Wes Peede who each contributed 2 singles to the attack.  The rest of the lineup all contributed to the 14 run slaughter.  Half way through the conference season the Jags are positioned well to finish in the top four if they can continue to bring dominant pitching (2.7 runs/gm, 1.4 ER/gm, 8 K/gm, .210 batting avg against) and strong bats (7 of the starters hitting over .333, 6.85 R/gm) to the second half of the season.  With Holly Springs losing to Middle Creek last night for the second time, a share of the top slot is open for grabs if the Jags can win out in conference play.

The Jags faced off against the conference leading Holly Springs Hawks Wednesday night and ran into a very "on" Carlos Rodon.  The Jag bats were cooled to just 3 hits.  David Hamm and Daniel Mason started the game off with back to back base hits which made it look like the Jags were going to continue their offensive assault but after that the only other hit was a "lost in the lights" double by Michael King in the fifth.  The Jags were blanked for the first time this season.  On the mound Chris Williams delivered another very strong performance going the distance and only giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits, 1BB, and 6Ks.  The Hawks struck with a homerun in the 2nd and an unearned run in the 4th but Chris kept the Jags within striking distance the entire game but unfortunately the offensive support just didn't show up this time.

The Jags were led on the mound today by Blair Betts who pitched a 4 hit game with 2 walks, 2 earned runs, and 11 K's.  His strong performance was followed mid-sixth inning by David Hamm to close out the game in another solid relief appearance.  The bats continue to show up in force led by Gerrit VanGenderen with 2 hits (1B, HR, 2R, 2RBI) followed by Dillon Rudio (1B, 2BB, RBI), Blair Betts (HR, 2R, RBI), David Hamm (1B, 2BB), Daniel Mason (1B), and Ben Snotherly (1B, 1R).  Athens brought solid defense today to compliment the pitching in hitting resulting in a very big conference win in the tight Tri-9.  The Jags are back on the field at Holly Springs tomorrow night to take a bite out of the conference leaders.

The Jags were back in action on Saturday against Person in their 3rd game of the Bobby Murray Tournament.  The Jags narrowly missed playing in the championship game by that one run loss in the first game but came back with strong pitching and bats against Person.  Gerrit VanGenderen took the mound to start the game pitching 4 innings without an earned run on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 4 Ks.  Ben Snotherly took over in the 5th giving up only one run on 2 hits, 4 walks, and 4Ks.  David Hamm came in to close out part way through the 7th to shut down a late Person bases loaded attack.  At the plate the Jags remained hot with two hits each by David Hamm (1B-2, 1BB, 1R, RBI), Patrick Graham (1B, 2B, 1BB, 1R, 1RBI), Blair Betts (1B, 3B, 1R, 2RBI), and Gerrit VanGenderen (1B, 2B, 1R, RBI).  Ben Snotherly, Michael King, and Daniel Mason each added singles to the attack.  Congratulations to Chris Williams being named to the Bobby Murray All Tournament Team for his outstanding pitching performance against Broughton.  The Jags are back into conference play next week with three important games against Green Hope, Holly Springs, and Green Hope again.  Come out to support the boys...

The Jags roared back into the win column behind a tremendous pitching performance by Chris Williams.  Chris went 6 innings allowing only 1 hit, no walks, and 13Ks to keep the Broughton Capitals on the bench.  The bats were back in action too led by Gerrit VanGenderen who went perfect at the plate including 2 singles, a triple, 2 runs and an RBI.  Matt Ruth was right behind Gerrit with a single that he turned into a base clearing sprint as he capitalized on a Caps error along with a double, 2 runs and an RBI.  Michael King and Ben Snotherly each added singles and Patrick Graham had a double to round out the Jags hitting spree.  The Jags are back in action at the USA Park at 4pm today.

The Jags started off the Bobby Murray tournament the same way they left off against Apex allowing only unearned runs to cross the plate (update from the last post for the Apex game where it was mistakenly reported that there was 1 earned run).  Once again some untimely errors bit the Jags and allowed East Wake to take a 2-1 lead in the 6th after Athens had taken the lead in the bottom of the 5th.  The game was a pitching duel with Blair Betts going 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, 2BB, and 7K's and David Hamm finishing with 1 inning 2BB and 1K.  The East Wake pitcher was equally as effective giving up 3 hits to Ben Snotherly, Patrick Graham, and Chris Williams.  The Jags are back on the field tonight against Broughton at 7:30pm at the USA Baseball Training Complex.

The Jags took a hard loss today against the Apex Cougars.  The Jags continued to hit the ball well but had a hard time driving runners in during a couple of key innings including bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with one out.  Matt Ruth led the way going perfect at the plate (1B-2, 2B, 2R), followed by Daniel Mason (1B, 2B, 2RBI) and Patrick Graham each with 2 hits, and David Hamm and Ben Snotherly each with singles.  Chris Williams threw an outstanding game where 5 unearned runs crossed because of some untimely errors by the Jags giving the Cougars the lead in the 6th when 4 of those runs cam in.  Chris gave up 6 hits, 1BB, and had 7 Ks in 6 1/3 innings and David Hamm came in to close giving up 1BB.  Athens will be playing in the Bobby Murray tournament starting next Thursday.

The Jags continued the slugging fest from the night before putting up 19 hits and 15 runs against WFR.    David Hamm led the way going 4-5 with Patrick Graham, Daniel Mason, Gerrit VanGenderen, Blair Betts, Michael King, and Chris Williams each having a multi hit game and Ben Snotherly and Ben Smith each contributing singles.  Ben Snotherly pitched a solid 4 1/3 innings giving up an unearned run on 5 hits, 4BB, and strking out 4.  Gerrit VanGenderen came in to close out the 5th inning with 1K and Patrick Graham closed out the game in the 6th inning giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, 1BB, and 2Ks.

The Jaguars once again covered all facets of the game bringing their hot bats and consistent pitching to battle a good Fuquay Varina team.  The only inning the team did not push runs across the plate was in a three up three down first.  Fuquay took an early lead going up 2-0 in the bottom of the first as a rowdy crowd cheered on the home team.  Athens battled back with a 4 run 2nd inning.  Fuquay once again scored 2 in the bottom of the second to tie it up but would then be silenced (along with their crowd) the rest of the game as the dominant Jags pitching and defense only allowed two runners on the rest of the game.  Athens on the other hand continued their aerial assult a several Bengal pitchers to run rule them in the 6th.  While the entire line up saw the basepath, Matt Ruth and Gerrit VanGenderen lead the way with 2 hits each and Blair Betts, Ben Snotherly, and Gerrit VanGenderen each homered.  On the mound Blair Betts went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, 4 BB, and 7Ks and David Hamm came in to close again with 1BB and 2Ks.  After this big win putting the Jags in a tie for first place in the conference, they hit the road to Wake Forest Rolesville tomorrow (game changed from Friday to Wednesday).

Win: Chris Williams

The Jag raised their record to 2-1 in conference play with a tight win against Panther Creek.  The Cats put some solid pitching on the mound but their defense gave up too many errors which the Jags capitalized on with a 3 run second inning that would be enough to win the game behind the strong arm of Chris Williams.  Chris pitched 6 innings giving up only one unearned run with one walk and five K's. David Hamm came in to pitch the 7th inning and the Jags had to shut down a late attack by Panther Creek.  At the plate the Jags continued to put the bat on the ball with Blair Betts leading the way going 2 for 2 with a walk, RBI, and a run.  David Hamm, Ben Snotherly, Patrick Graham, Chris Williams, and Daniel Mason each contributed singles.  The Jags next face Fuquay Varina on Tuesday night at Fuquay.

The Jags pulled off a win in a game filled with errors on both sides of the field.  WFR jumped out to an early lead in the first capitalizing on some early errors by Athens.  The Jags settled down though and provided solid defense behind Gerrit VanGenderen on the mound.  The Jags battled back with one run innings to take the lead in the fourth but WFR came roaring back with 3 runs in the fifth.  David Hamm came in to shut them down on the mound and the Jags mounted their response in the bottom of the fifth capped off with a homerun by Blair Betts to take the lead for the final time.  Hamm kept WFR at bay with 5 K's in the last two innings.  The bats continue to find their mark led by Matt Ruth, Ben Snotherly, Patrick Graham, Blair betts, Michael King, and Chris Williams each with two hits.  Jags are back on the home field Friday at 4pm against Panther Creek.
