Sereno 94 White boys started out the National Championships on a high note Wednesday morning beating the Region II champions Blast FC 4-0. Despite a 7:30 AM game time (4:30 AM Arizona time) the win set a tone for the rest of the tournament. Goals were scored by Douglass Jamison, Mason Robertson, Cole Nagy and Nick Cavaretta.
In Thursday’s action the Sereno boys would face the region III champions SCSA Gold from North Carolina. Sereno would once again start strong with two goals in the first half by Riggs Lennon. South Charlotte would battle back with a late goal, bringing the final to 2-1.
Friday would bring on the Region I champions from Eastern PA, Spirit United Celtic. This match would be a battle from the beginning as both sides would have chances. A second half goal by Celtic would be the games only score and Sereno would fall 0-1. With three teams tied with 6 points it would go to the tie breakers to see who would face Baltimore Casa Mia in the championship. Sereno would have the goal differential tie beaker over Spirit United and Grand Rapids of Michigan and would go on to the championship.
The U14 and U15 championships were to be played late Saturday afternoon. Sereno would come out a bit flat and Baltimore would capitalize on an early goal. Sereno would battle back late in the first half with a few good chances, but would not be able to find the equalizer. Early in the second half a Sereno defender would commit a foul just outside the 18 and would earn a questionable red card. The free kick from the foul would find the back of the net bringing the lead to 2-0. The two goal lead and Sereno playing down a man would prove too much to overcome and the finals would end 2-0.
Sereno goal keeper and Captain Kyle Jackson would win the tournaments golden glove award as the best goal keeper in the U15 age bracket. His play was truly special and he was the clear winner of this award.
Although it was a disappointing loss for the boys, getting to the finals and coming up short, they can hold there heads up high and appreciate the great season and outstanding effort through the 2008-2009 campaign.

Congratulations to the 2009 Arizona State Cup Champion 94 Sereno White Boys.
For the fourth time in five years the boys found themselves in the Arizona state cup finals. For the third time in those same five years they battled out of the loser bracket. For the second time, of those three, they have pulled off a championship giving them a third state cup title.
Like years past, the boys battled through injuries and overcome obstacles to obtain this achievement. With our starting keeper going down with a broken wrist in our last match prior to state cup, the boys had to change it up and play at a higher level. With one of our top forwards having to play keeper the boys stayed focused, believed in each other and got it done.
The Sereno boys would like to thank all the teams who participated in this year’s tournament. The FBSL Gallos played unbelievable soccer giving the boys three great games. Many of the games could have gone either way, your effort and desire was inspiring.
A special thank you goes out to coach David Robertson who did a masterful job in making these last minute adjustments to keep the boys on target. His outstanding coaching and mentorship to the boys is unparalleled.
Great job boys, we are all proud of you. Good luck at Cerritos and Regionals.

The Sereno 94 boys, fresh off of the high school season, came out as Champions at the 2009 Presidents Cup tournament. The team was a bit short handed on Saturday, with a couple players making it to the AZ high school finals. Their Sereno teammates played well and finished Saturday off with a 2-0 record, despite the missing boys. They defeated a nice Schwaben team from Illinois 2-1 and then winning 3-1 over an FC Blazers team from Massachusetts.
Sunday would bring on the Minnesota state finalists from 2008 (St. Croix). The Sereno boys would play great and take a 4-0 victory. The final game would decide the bracket winner as Sereno would need to win or tie to move into the semi-finals. The final bracket game was to be played against another state cup finalist from Oklahoma (Celtic Green). The half would end 0-0 and the Celtic team would strike first about 10 minutes into the second half. The Sereno boys then kicked into another gear and scored a tying goal with about 20 minutes left in the second half. Sereno would then get hit with a red card and go down a man in the match. The boys would keep it together and with about 5 minutes remaining, they would find the back of the net for a 2-1 end of regulation score.
After going 4-0 against good competition in bracket play, Sereno would now face the state finalists in Pennsylvania East FC Delco. FC Delco would be coming out of arguably the toughest bracket in the tournament, winning a 3-2 quarter finals game against the Illinois state cup semi-finalist and current #1 ranked team in Illinois. Sereno 94 would start off strong and have multiple opportunities at the net, but some great defense and goalkeeping would finish the half tied at 0-0. Sereno would once again start off strong creating scoring opportunities and finally capitalizing about 20 minutes into the second half. The boys would keep up the pressure the rest of the way but would not find the net, ending the semi-finals with a 1-0 win.
The finals (just two hours later) would bring on the Cal North San Juan Lightning team, fresh off of a PK victory over the #10 nationally ranked De Anza Force. The Sereno boys started out and dominated the match as it appeared the San Juan boys had run out of gas. Six games in 3 days can do that to the best of teams. Sereno would win the finals 5-0.
Congrats to Sereno on the third straight tournament championship and good luck the rest of the way.

The 2009 youth soccer Far West Regional tournament kicked off in Lancaster California on June 15th. The Far West Regional tournament is always one of the nations most competitive. This year would prove this more than ever in the boys U-15 age group as the #1 (Aztecs- So Cal), #2 (SC Sporting- Nor Cal), #3 (Arsenal- So Cal) and #5 (Sereno- AZ) nationally ranked teams according to www.gotsoccer.com would be participating. The regional brackets are drawn blind and parings decided prior to teams making the tournament. This year’s draw would force Sereno to face a huge challenge just to make it out of bracket.
Sereno would start bracket play against the 2008 National Cup finalist and currently #3 nationally ranked Arsenal. The game kicked off at 2:00 PM in some windy cold conditions. Sereno would score first on a header goal by Riggs Lennon and take a 1-0 lead into the half only to be tied up in the second half and finish the game at 1-1. Tuesday would bring on the New Mexico Nike Rush for an 8:00 AM game which was the only game of the tournament played with little to no wind. Again, Sereno would start strong and score early on a second tournament goal by Riggs Lennon. With many more opportunities in the half they could only manage a 1-0 half time lead. The second half would bring more chances to score but the only team to score in the second half was the Rush, ending again in a 1-1 tie. The two previous game results would force Sereno to win on Wednesday or be out of the tournament. Wednesday’s game against the Southern California Eagles kicked off at noon and would prove to be the hottest game of the weekend. Unlike the previous two days the Sereno boys would go down 1-0 early. The boys would battle back and score just before the half on a beautiful strike by Angel Rascon from 30 yards out to draw even at 1-1. The second half would put the wind at Sereno’s back and the boys turned it on scoring 3 goals (Douglass Jamison, Angel Rascon and Cole Nagy) in the second half to win 4-1. Outstanding midfield play from Andy Juarez, Cory (CJ) Zimmerman, Mason Robertson, Will Ellis and Brando Reyes catapulted the Sereno boys into the quarterfinals.
As if the bracket play was not tough enough, the blind draw would put the Sereno boys up against the Northern California Champion and #2 nationally ranked Santa Clara Sporting in the quarterfinals. The game kicked off at noon and would be another hot and windy one. The first half put the wind at SC Sportings back and they would manage an early score to take a 1-0 lead into the half. Tremendous defense by Alexis Murrieta, Brock Labertew, Bryce Terrill, Zach Hudson, Michael Truty and keeper Kyle Jackson would keep SC Sporting at bay for the rest of the game. Sereno would get the wind in the second half and manage a score by Cole Nagy to bring the game even at 1-1 during regulation time. The teams would face two hot 15 minute overtimes. SC Sporting would get the wind in the first overtime and Sereno battled to hold them off and prevent several scoring opportunities. In the second overtime, with the wind at their backs, Sereno would get a goal from Douglass Jamison to take a 2-1 lead. Not being satisfied with the score, Cole Nagy would put in a goal near the end to finish SC Sporting off 3-1.
The quarterfinal win moved Sereno into the semifinals against a familiar Washington Premier team. This game would start off like Monday and Tuesdays matches as Sereno would score early on an Angel Rascon goal to take a 1-0 lead into the half. Washington would battle back and tie the game early in the second half. Within a few minutes Douglass Jamison would be taken down in the box and Angel Rascon would put in a PK and his second goal of the game. Angel was not done as he finished of his hat trick from a great pass by Peter Douds to take the lead 3-1. With minutes remaining Cory (CJ) Zimmerman would work the left side of the field and feed a nice ball into Nick Cavaretta who would go to the upper corner of the net with a left footed shot to end the game at 4-1.
The finals would match up the two day one opponent’s with Sereno-AZ facing Arsenal-So. Cal. Arsenal had battled into a 3-2 overtime win versus the Nevada state champion Player United in the semifinals after beating the #1 ranked Aztecs 2-1 in the quarterfinals. The Sunday 10:00 AM game brought in warm temperatures and a normal 10-15 mile an hour wind. The first half would be played in the middle of the field with both teams getting few opportunities to score as the defenses just seemed unbeatable. With a 0-0 halftime score, both teams came out firing early in the second half and the goal keeping of Kyle Jackson and the Arsenal keeper was as good as any two U-15 goalies could be. About 75 minutes into regulation Cole Nagy would find the back of the net off of an Angel Rascon deflection. The Sereno boys would hold on for the last 5 minutes to defeat the Arsenal and be named 2009 Far West Region champions.
In his first year as the 94 Sereno boys coach and only his second year out of Scotland, David Robertson has surely set the bar for youth soccer in Arizona. The boys, parents and club would like to thank David for all that he has brought to the boys and Sereno Soccer Club. Good luck to you and the boys at Nationals.
