Bob,
Chris is at Beaumont in Royal Oak, as you stated in ICU, although Renay said that he should be out sometime Monday. He has a pretty good incision, so he will probably be in the hospital most of the week. Everything went well and while he is done for our season, the doctors say he should be ready to go for spring hockey ... thanks for your concern.

Coach Ron Gay's Capital Centre Pride Midget A just returned from a fabulous trip to Finland. Here are some links to pictures of the CCP Boyz and the trip. At the bottom of this section is a report on the trip from Sue Thomas ... Click the pic to see more ... Click the pic to see more ... Click the pic to see more ... Click the pic to see more ... This Webmaster asked Susan Thomas, Manager of CCP, to send us a report on the trip, and she did ... Thanks, Sue! The CCP Midget A Team was treated well during their recent visit to Tampere, Finland. The Midget A team, coached by Ron Gay, were able to travel with legendary MSU hockey coach Ron Mason and former MSU, NHL (Calgary, Hartford, San Jose and NY Rangers) and 2006 Italian Olympic goaler Jason Muzzatti. The boys played 3 games while there and posted the following record against the Finnish squads: CCP 8- Ilves AA 1 CCP 4 - Ilves AAA 4 CCP 8 - Ilves AA 0 While there, the boys met Finnish players Mika Arvaja and Vesa Viitakoski -- Vesa even helped with practice in between his games in Sweden and Helsinki. The squad was split into thirds and were able to practice with the Finnish boys under their coaching staff. The CCP boys were welcomed and learned that 15/16 year olds have a lot in common whether they are from America or Finland! A little soccer fun in warm-ups, but all business on the ice. The boys were treated on Friday when the Finnish Junior National coaches ran practice. Drills sound a little different in Finnish, but the skating is the same. All in all, the CCP boys had a great time discovering new foods and friends, a different time zone ... and, the Finnish Sauna experience ... all while playing a game they love -- Hockey! Thanks, also, to Greg Johnston for his help with this page!
The "Miracle on Ice" is the nickname given to a February 22 medal-round men's ice hockey game during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, in which a team of amateur and collegiate players from the United States, led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Soviet Union 4-3. The United States went on to win the gold medal by beating Finland (4–2) in their final game. The Soviet Union took the silver by beating Sweden in their final game. Sweden received the bronze medal, and Finland finished 4th. (Source: Wikipedia.) This one game would become "American Hockey's Defining Moment" and would inspire countless American boys and girls of the 80's to become hockey players. We would have to guess that the majority of our Midgets playing today are on the ice because their fathers were drawn into this sport after watching Herb Brooks and his U.S. team topple the Mighty Red Machine in Lake Placid. Well, the reason we bring this up, now, is because we just received an interesting E-mail regarding this pivotal game from one of our friends in Finland, Pekka Karppanen. Many of you will recall that it was just a year ago that Team Finland came to visit Detroit to play six games with some of our best Southeastern Michigan 1992 Travel Teams. We have kept in touch with Team Finland's Head Coach, Juha Oksala and Pekka. So, here is the E-mail: Hi Bob, I'm sorry I have not kept in contact. I've been busy! Our 93 born boys played in three levels, AAA, AA and A. Now we still have tryout camp going on. Mr. Juha Oksala asked me if I had any interesting photos for you. Karhu-Kissat (Bear-Cats) celebrated its 70th anniversary with a party and some special games. The Karhu-Kissat Oldies played with "Zoom", a team of Finnish celebrities and famous people. One of the referees was Mr Karl-Gustaf Kaisla. Perhaps you remember the "Miracle on Ice" match in 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid. Mr Kaisla was the referee, when USA defeated the Sovjet Union 4-3. The "Red Machine" was unbeatable those days. Please find the attached picture of Karl-Gustaf Kaisla: (below -- Ed.) The next photo, in action when Karhu-Kissat Oldies plays with HIFK Oldies after "Zoom" match. brgds, Pekka Thanks for sending this in, Pekka! We have enjoyed this and the opportunity to remember this great hockey game! And, Good Luck to your Boyz with tryouts (it never ends, does it ...)
