WHY WE ARE WHAT WE ARE
A lot of people think this team and its schedule is crazy. This year we will be playing about 80 games with 2 practices a week. We will take between 5-6 weekends off between mid Sept. to mid March and play 3-4 games on the weekends we don't. The main reason for this is the dedication shown by players and parents.

Miles Driven to Practice and # of Players.
over 100 miles - 2 players
75 - 100 miles - 3 players
50 - 75 miles - 3 players
25 - 50 miles - 3 players
0 - 25 miles - 4 players

Our practices very seldom are missing a skater as the kids come because they know that is where we improve. We then take what we work on in practice and try to use it in the games. That is the essence and effort of this whole endeavor. The season starts Labor Day weekend.
As of 2/29/04
Bonus Games - Tourney games - 16
                Exhibition games - 4
                League games - 7
Total Bonus Games - 27

Weekend days off - 17

Congrats to Steve Zalewski.(One of our newest players older brother.) He was chosen in the 5th round of the NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks. I am pretty sure he will be headed to Clarkson this season where we wish him the best of luck. It will give us all another hockey website to check.

THE LIFE OF A TRAVEL HOCKEY PARENT!
I used to have a life. Now I just have the life of a travel hockey parent

I used to think the $40 for a new stick was exorbidant. Now I pray that all he wants is a $40 stick

I used to be a leader in my field of work. I still am. That's how I pay for all this

My driveway used to be plowed after every snowfall. Now I just ram the snow bank left by the plow to save time

I used to look for fine French restaurants with a good wine list. Now I'm a connoisseur of "arena food"

I used to have a garage, now I have an indoor shooting facility

I used to go south for Christmas and winter break. Now its off to the tourney with 15 of my closest friends.

AFTER ALL THAT!

I used to worry about living my life through my kid. Now I'm privledged to live my life WITH MY KID!

CONGRATULATIONS TO A COUPLE OF STARS ALUM'S
I finally got a chance to look at the latest issue of the USA Hockey magazine and I want to thank Coach Prince for pointing out to me that Ryan Hayes was in the insert on the cover and was featured in a write up (Page 9) as he led the UDS NTDP Under 17 team in scoring at the 4 Nations Tournament in Finland over the holidays. He is also leading them in scoring for the season. I also hear that Ryan may have received an offer from BC recently so huge congrats to him. He has really earned it with the hard work he has put in. On the same page was a shot of goaltender Joe Palmer, the #1 goalie on US NTDP Under 18 team. His U-18 team finished 2nd in the 4 Nations Tourney. Joe came up through the Stars system and it is great to see him doing so well as I also know how much time and effort he has put in. I remember a couple of conversations I had with his Mom before we went to Alaska last year and her wishing us well etc... She was one of the nicest ladies I've spoken with in hockey so it is just great to see Joe's hard work pay off. This press after one of our players had his picture in the magazine a couple of issue's back. Very cool indeed!!

QUALITY HOCKEY COACHES DEPOT
Subject: Calling all coaches...

A store that sells Quality Hockey Coaches has just opened in Minneapolis where a parent of young hockey player may go to choose a Quality Hockey Coach for their up-and-coming NHL superstar from among many Quality Hockey Coaches.

The store is comprised of 6 floors, and the quality of the Quality Hockey Coaches increase in positive attributes as the shopper (the parent) ascends the flights.
There is, however, a catch. As you open the door to any floor you may choose a Quality Hockey Coach from that floor, but, if you go up a floor, you cannot go back down except to exit the building.
So, one day, a father of a 10-year old up-and-coming NHL superstar goes to the shopping center to find a Quality Hockey Coach for his son.

On the first floor the sign on the door reads:
Floor 1 - These Quality Hockey Coaches enjoy coaching kids (not afraid to use discipline when necessary).

The parent reads the sign and says to himself, "Well, that's better than my child's last Hockey Coach, but I wonder what's further up?" So up the stairs he goes.

The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2 - These Quality Hockey Coaches enjoy coaching kids (not afraid to use discipline when necessary) and have a detailed game plan for the season.

The father remarks to himself, "That's great, but I wonder what's further up?" And up he goes again.

The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3 - These Quality Hockey Coaches enjoy coaching kids (not afraid to use discipline when necessary), have a detailed game plan for the season and possess a tremendous amount of hockey knowledge and experience.
"Hmmm, better" he says "But I wonder what's upstairs?"

The fourth floor sign reads:
Floor 4 - These Quality Hockey Coaches enjoy coaching kids (not afraid to use discipline when necessary), have a detailed game plan for the season, possess a tremendous amount of hockey knowledge and experience and run an excellent practice.
"Wow!" exclaims the father, "very tempting. BUT, there must be more further up!" And again he heads up another flight.

The fifth floor sign reads:
Floor 5 - These Quality Hockey Coaches enjoy coaching kids (not afraid to use discipline when necessary), have a detailed game plan for the season, possess a tremendous amount of hockey knowledge and experience, run an excellent practice and believe in fair play - allowing all players justifiable and fairly equal ice time.
"Oh, mercy me! But just think...what must be awaiting me further on?"
So up to the sixth floor he goes.

The sixth floor sign reads:
Floor 6 - You are visitor 3,456,789,012 to this floor. There are no Quality Hockey Coaches on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that parents can be impossible to please. Thank you for shopping QUALITY HOCKEY COACHES MART and have a nice day.

BASIL'S BITES Plus others
Karen Wilson got these great sayings from listening to Basil McCrae on the St. Louis bench. Have any to add send them my way.

"You've got all the tools, but no toolbox."
"You saw more rubber than a dead cat on highway 401."
"Coast to coast like butter toast."
"Get the puck boys, it's the black thing you know."
"120 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal."
"Wakey! Wakey!"
"Where does Grandma keep the peanut butter? Top shelf!"
"Take the eggs out of your pants and start hitting."
"He's in corner working hard and you're standing there selling tickets."
"We're just a AA roller hockey team from St.Louis."

Others:
"You get worse and worse everyday and right now your playing like its the middle of next week."
"The Zamboni goes into the corner faster than you do."

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE # 1 By Vince Lombardi
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE # 1 By Vince Lombardi

You've Got To Pay The Price

"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all - the - time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing."
"There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do and to win and to win and to win."
"Every time a football player goes out to ply his trade he's got to play from the ground up - from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more important, you've got to play with your heart - with every fiber of your body. If your lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second."
"Running a football team is no different from running any other kind of organization - an army, a political party, a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win - to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is."
"It's a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they're there - to compete. They know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The objective is to win - fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules - but to win."
And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that yearns for, needs, discipline and the harsh reality of head - to - head combat."
"I don't say these things because I believe in the 'brute' nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly belive that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - VICTORIOUS."

A Nice Joke From Someone Who Gets It
smiley_puck.jpg
At one point during a hockey game, the coach called one of his 9-year old hockey players aside and asked, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?"
The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

"Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?"
The little boy nodded yes.

"So." the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, that when you are unhappy with a ref's decision you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the ref or call him a p*$@er-head. Do you understand all that?"
Again the little boy nodded.

He continued, "And when I bench you for your lack of cooperation and disrespect, it's not good sportsmanship to call me a dumb a**hole is it?"
Again the little boy nodded.

"Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your parents!"
