1992 Flint Icelanders Head South For Spring
FLINT (IP) The 1992 Flint Icelanders have gone their seperate ways for the spring season. Some will play golf, baseball or soccer, while others just rest-up for next season. A few have elected to work on their skills in Flint under Coach Mike Jakubic. Andrew Lay will be skating for a tournament team out of Buffalo, New York while Zach Makimaa skates with the 1993 Battalion team and the Simcoe Express, a tournament team in Canada. Seven of the 1992 Flint Icelanders however, will be skating for Detroit Tier 1 teams this spring. A source close to the Icelander Press has confirmed that Ivan Gaydayenko will be skating with the 1992 Little Caesars team. Dalton Bates, Carter Foguth, Brendan McLeskey, Vaughn Mortimer and William Peltier will skate for the 1992 Honeybaked team, while Dane Genord is with the 1992 Compuware team. These seven may find themselves playing against each other and some of the best talent in Michigan and Ohio. Of course we KNOW where the best players are from. You can check them out in the Big Dog tournament at Lakeland Ice Arenas in Waterford on April 19 - 21. Congratulations to those that made the Tier 1 teams and good luck to all the 1992 Flint Icelanders. Have fun this summer and good luck next year.
1992 Icelanders Wrap-up Season With 10-1 Win Over Ann Arbor
FLINT (IP) The 1992 Flint Icelanders defeated Ann Arbor on Saturday, March 16 in their final game of the season at Flint Iceland Arenas. The Flint players were really tested in the game, not by the Ann Arbor team, but by their own coach. In the lockeroom before the game, the Flint coach placed some heavy demands on his team asking each player to test himself by putting EVERYTHING he had been taught into this one final game. Remember to use all your breakouts, the D to D, the BOARD, the QUICK and the CROSS. Forwards, use the pass and cross, set up the offensive zone Triangle, make sure there are 2 men on the A.T.S., and be ready to back-check. Goalies, cut down the angle, stay focused and be aggressive on the shot. Everybody, look for the weak-side pass and stay out of NO MAN'S LAND, remember the JERICO play, defensemen, be strong inside the offensive zone, close the gap at the blueline on the 1 on 1s and keep your feet moving, use the net, passes are hard, quick and in the passing lanes, dont forget to KEEP THE MOUSE OUT OF THE HOUSE. To an outsider the terms may appear complicated and demanding but to these 8 and 9 year olds they were all too familiar. It did not matter who the opponent was, it could have been any team, no one in the lockeroom even thought about it. A challenge had been made and the 1992 Flint Icelanders would respond, out-shooting their opponents 43-8 in a 10 - 1 victory that would leave a lasting impression on their coaches.
In the opening period it was a shooting gallery with Flint out-shooting Ann Arbor 17-1. The Ann Arbor goalie was on fire in the period stopping everything, but at the 2:11 mark, Flint finally scored on a Spencer Spurlin shot set-up by Andrew Lay and Garrett Hudson. With 1:30 left in the period Flints Zach Makimaa put the Icelanders up by two scoring what turned out to be the game winner, assisted by William Peltier and Christopher Zikmund. First period score Flint 2, Ann Arbor 0.
In the second period, Flint picked up where they had left off, shelling the Ann Arbor netminder with 14 more shots, scoring 4 times. The first goal coming just one minute into the period on a shot by Christopher Zikmund with Andrew Lay and Dalton Hammond assisting. Flints William Peltier made it 4-0 at the 9:51 mark on a nice pass from Zach Makimaa. Captain Andrew Lay scored the last two goals of the period. The first at 6:03 on a nice set-up by Christopher Zikmund and the second goal with just 55 seconds left, assisted by Carter Foguth. Second period score Flint 6, Ann Arbor 0.
The Icelanders started the third period shorthanded with Garrett Hudson in for roughing, but Flints penalty-kill units worked hard keeping Ann Arbor off the scoreboard. At the 10:29 mark, Flints Ivan Gaydayenko scored on the powerplay with Vaughn Mortimer and Alex Jakubic getting the helpers. Flint made it 8-0 on Zach Makimaas unassisted goal, his second of the day. Andrew Lay scored on the powerplay at 3:46 to complete his hattrick with Ivan Gaydayenko assisting. The Icelanders scored their last goal with three minutes left in the game, a Zach Makimaa blast for the hat trick, helpers going to Spencer Spurlin and Garrett Hudson. The Ann Arbor team scored their only goal, a shorthanded tally with 16 seconds left in the game (16 from 44). Final score Flint 10, Ann Arbor 1. Ann Arbors netminder had a miraculous game turning back 33 of 43 Flint shots while Flint goalie Spencer Hill stopped 7 of 8 for the Icelanders. The 1992 Flint Icelanders really put on a clinic, demonstrating great passing, speed and teamwork. Only time will tell what is in store for these talented young men.

In a recent interview with EMHA President Gale Cronk, it was reported that Coach Mike Van Norman will be returning to the Novice group starting on Saturday, September 7, 2002. Coach Mike who spent the last 5 years with the 1992 Flint Icelander AAA team is looking forward to working with the newest Flint Icelanders. If there is enough interest, he would like to take a select group of 1997, 1998 and 1999 players one night a week. The Novice group skates every Saturday and Sunday @ 1:30pm - 2:30pm starting September 7, 2002 and runs thru March. See you there.
10 Year Olds Make Their Coaching Debut
FLINT (IP) Who ever heard of 10 year olds coaching hockey? Well, the EMHA Flint Icelanders Novice group has. Players who previously played under Coach Mike Van Norman on the 1992 Flint Icelander Select teams, will have an opportunity to work as coaches during the 2002/03 Novice season. "The Novice kids, who are 4 and 5 years old really look up to these guys," said Coach Mike, "they watch them and listen to them and work very hard to duplicate their moves." This year, the Novices have already had sessions with William Peltier (1992 Honeybaked AAA), Gavin Rustin (Lapeer Squirt AA), Dalton Hammond (Flint Squirt AA), Dane Genord (1992 Compuware AAA), Jon Barr (1992 Honeybaked AAA), Andrew Lay (Compuware AAA), Travis Carto (Compuware AAA), Nik Keene (Flint Squirt AA), Danny Jordan (Flint Squirt AA), Spencer Hill (Lapeer Squirt AA), Matt Bowman (Flint Squirt AA), Marcus Wojtkowicz (Compuware AAA), Zach Makimaa (Battalion Squirt AA) and Niles Owen (Ice Dogs AAA). I know the Novice parents also appreciate having them out there. The parents know what a difference it makes when they are on the ice with the boys. These guys take their jobs very seriously and it has a positive influence on the Novice players." "The Novice group can always use help" said Coach Mike, "I'm looking forward to seeing some of the other 1992 players come out this season to work with these guys and get a taste of what coaching is all about." 1992 Icelanders: Practice Makes Perfect
Just another day on the ice for the 1992 Flint Icelanders. Practice, practice, practice and more practice. It's what dreams are made of.
1992 Flint Icelanders Turn Heads in Detroit
FLINT (IP) With the new season fast approaching, players wanting to play at youth hockey's highest level made their way south to tryout for Detroit area Tier 1 (AAA) teams. You can take your pick but Compuware, Little Caesars and Honeybaked (aka. The Big Three) and the Ice Dogs and Belle Tire will be tough teams to make. The tryouts are very competitive in the Tier 1 division with players coming from all over Michigan. Landing a spot on any of these teams would be quite an accomplishment.
The loss of Tier 1 hockey in Flint played a major role in the outcome of these tryouts. It also took it's toll on the 1992 Flint Icelander select team with many of it's players heading south hoping for a spot with one of these teams. The 1992 Flint players have as much experience as any ten year old in Michigan having played four years against Canada's best elite teams. It was no surprise to this reporter when these players turned heads at the tryouts. Their passing, speed, positional play and teamwork speak for themselves. During the tryouts one coach summed it up with the following statement, "The Detroit coaches are fighting over the Flint Players". When it was all over ten 1992 Flint Icelanders were selected for the fall season. Five Flint players chose not to tryout for the Tier 1 teams. Honeybaked landed Utility player Dalton Bates along with sharpshooters Brendan McLeskey and William Peltier. The Ice Dogs picked up tough guy Garrett Hudson while Compuware got 2 top defensemen in Dane Genord and Carter Foguth plus Icelander Captain and centerman Andrew Lay. Little Caesars added a real speedster to their team with the addition of winger Ivan Gaydayenko. Compuware's 1993 Battalion team hit the jackpot with the addition of Zach "Bulldog" Makimaa and Spencer Spurlin. Tier 1 teams will compete against each other in the MidWest Elite Hockey League (MWEHL) starting in September. Watch for these talented Flint players starring at an arena near you.

You Can't Win the Kentucky Derby on Mr. Ed
Food for thought: It is important that players take care of their bodies. This involves rest, nutrition and fitness. Hockey is a demanding sport, especially at the "AAA" level where the pace is fast with little or no breaks in the game. Even at nine years old, players should begin to prepare themselves for practices and games. A WELL BALANCED MEAL is important. Avoid fatty foods and all fastfoods. Meals should be eaten 3 - 4 hours before games and practices. Pre-game snacks can be eaten 2 hours before. One good meal does not make-up for a week of poor eating. Lots of FLUIDS are also important. Water and Gatorade type products are the best and plenty of them at least 30 minutes before practices and games. Avoid Caffine and sugary products like soft drinks. REST and RELAXATION is also very important. Players need to be mentally and physically ready. This starts with a good nights sleep and ends with a 2 hour relaxation period prior to workouts. STRETCHING is a must. All players should be properly stretched before games and practices. Do not stretch cold. Stretches should be done ONLY after a player has warmed up. So remember, Easy on the Gravy because "You can't win the Kentucky Derby on Mr. Ed."
