by Robert Ziegler 3/2/2007

SMYRNA, TENESSEE - Cincinnati-area club Ohio Elite took a pair of championships Sunday at the Stones River FC Region III Championship Invitational, winning the U16 and U17 age groups.

Cleveland FC won the U14 title with a 2-0 win over Eclipse Select East, while Atlanta Fire prevented a clean sweep of titles by Region II teams, taking a 3-1 victory over Michigan Hawks in the U15 final.

Halie Watts, Cristina Guzzetti and Carolyn DiNapoli scored for Scott Donohue's Fire squad. Devin Bond scored a goal for Hawks.

Donohue said the win bodes well for things to come.

"I think we played well and beat a tremendous team," he said. "We composed ourselves and played outstanding soccer. This is great for us to prepare for the Georgia State Cup."

Watts said the team put a lot of work into earning what she said was their biggest win to date.

"This team is working very hard over the past year and I'm just so blessed to be with these girls on a team," Watts said. "We don't have any drama on this team and our coach makes sure of that."

Partying at the Lake!!
On Sat., Aug 26, 2006, the Green's again hosted an incredible time at their lake house for the team. Almost 60 people enjoyed an afternoon of boating, skiing, wakeboarding, canoeing, and jet-skiing. The weather was great, the food was amazing and, best of all, the girls and their families continue to have a blast whenever we get together!

Mark your calendars!
With Casl Elite winning NC's state cup on Dec 16, 2006, they automatically get an invitation to the Region III Championship tournament in June 2007. The next 2 top Region III east finishers then get a invite. With AFUSA 92 Elite team finishing 3rd in this division, we have secured a spot in the Championship tournament, regardless of what happens at Georgia's state cup competition in June 2007. Congrats to CASL and thanks!

AFUSA U14 Elite is GYSA State Cup Finalists for 2006!!
After going undefeated in the first weekend of GYSA's 2006 State Cup tournament, AFUSA faced it toughest competitor - the RIIIPL champions, AFC. After tying them in the Spring RIIIPL season, we knew what to expect...great soccer... and that is what we got. Both teams played hard, with AFC going up 2-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game. Finally finding their rhythm, AFUSA finally scored a goal and then equaled the equation before the final seconds of regular game time, forcing the game into overtime. After playing one 10 minute scoreless period, AFUSA finally put one in the goal to win the game 3-2, allowing them to advance to the finals on Sunday.

On Sunday, we again faced a tough competitor - GSA. AFUSA started the game with a goal in the first 15 seconds of the game, but then GSA answered that one with 2 of their own to see the halftime score of GSA-2 and AFU - 1. With about a minute to go, we tied the game, sending it again into OT. After 20 minutes of scoreless soccer, the two teams got ready for a shootout. It was GSA's day as they were able to put all 5 of their shots into the net versus our 4. Good luck to them as they head to Little Rock AR for the regional tournament.

With our win in the semi's, however, AFUSA U14 secured a spot in the RIII Premiere League at u15 in the Fall 2006. Congrats to a great 2005-2006 season and thanks to Coach Scott for everything he has done for these girls!!

AFUSA u14 will play RIIIPL east in the Spring 2006 season!
As one of 12 teams, AFUSA will join GSA and AFC from GA to play against other teams from Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina in the Region III Premiere League. Finishing 3rd in the Athena A division for Fall 2005, AFUSA will enjoy fierce competition in the spring as they prepare for the GYSA State Cup in June 2006.

AFUSA U14 ElTE wins 2006 Girls' Rock Tournament!!
The AFUSA U14 Elite team won the 2006 Girls' Rock tournament in Savannah, GA over the Jan. 21-22 weekend. The competition was good and the Championship game was a show of incredible soccer between 2 Region III Teams (who will meet again on Feb. 19 in Greenville, SC). The game was tied 0-0 even after 2 ovvertime periods and AFUSA won in a very close and exciting shootout. Congrats to all the teams! (Including Coach Scott's other 2 teams who brought home medals!)

ATL FIRE WINS 2005 CASL SHOOTOUT TOURNAMENT!
During an incredible weekend of weather, the Atlanta Fire '92 Elite team traveled to Raleigh to participate in the 25th anniversary of the CASL Shootout tournament. The team played teams from Maryland, Florida, and North Carolina allowing only 1 goal for the entire tournament. The finals were against the GSA Greensboro Twisters and was won after 2 scoreless overtime periods in a sudden death shootout. Great soccer and a great weekend!

October 22, 2005 Girls enjoy a fun filled night ice skating followed by a spend the night party!
The team celebrated both Madeline and Anna's birthdays with an ice skating party on Saturday, Oct. 22. Although it was the first time ice skating for a few, the girls came out of the skating party with only a few skinned knees and maybe a blister or two. The girls had an incredible time and the only muscles sore were their face muscles from laughing so much. The skating/pizza party was followed with a spend the night party at the Barker's home. These girls get along so well, no one wanted to leave at 11 am the next morning. We thank the Barker's for sharing their home and for their hospitality.

92 Freedom Gold wins Memorial Day cup 2005!
Over the Memorial day weekend, the u13 92 Freedom Gold girls won the Atlanta Silverbacks Memorial Day Cup Tournament,-- not in the u13 division, but playing up in the A bracket of the U14 division. Because of the bracket they were playing in, going into the weekend, the girls anticipated 3 very tough matches and possibly 3 losses.... In the first game against a tough Brentwood Attack team(from Tennessee), the girls found themselves down 3-0 at the end of the first half. Never ones to give up, the girls battled back to a 3-3 tie, scoring in the last 18 seconds to tie the game. With a little more confidence, the girls played to a 1-1 tie against the 90/91 Silverback team. On Sunday, the girls scored 3 and held a shutout against a 91 Lightning team from AFC to put them into the finals against the Brentwood Attack team. Both teams came out strong under horrible weather conditions and a very wet field and scored 1 each. After a tough battle, AUSA found themselves up 3-2 to win the championship.

AUSA '92 Freedom Gold recently returned from the IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida where they were invited for a special day of training by several nationally ranked coaches on the staff at the IMG Academy. While the team trained, our new goalie received special training from a goalie coach. In between sessions, the girls were excited to watch a pre-season game between the DC United and Freddie Adu and the Univ. of Central Florida. Freddie was gracious to meet the girls and sign their backpacks. Following lunch, the girls were treated to a tour of the facility. To wrap up the day, the girls returned to the practice fields to watch several of the other MLS teams practice. It was a great and very beneficial day for the girls!

Heard by one of the dads while crossing the fields next to the Chicago Fire players: "Hey look at those girls! They are better than us!"
